General Information
HOW TO ORDER
Should you require further information or wish to order any of the products in this catalogue please contact your nearest Steel & Tube Stainless branch (as listed on the inside front cover).

STAINLESS STEEL COMPOSITION

Stainless steel is a name given to a group of steel alloys that contain more than 10.5% Chromium. Chromium has a high affinity for oxygen and forms a stable oxide film on the surface of stainless steel. The film is called the passive oxide layer and forms instantaneously in ordinary atmospheres. The film is self healing and rebuilds when it has been removed. It is this film that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance.

STAINLESS STEEL GRADES

Grade 304 is made up of 18% Chromium 8% Nickel and offers good corrosion resistance. Grade 304 is the most common stainless steel grade produced and satisfies a broad demand for adequate performance at an affordable price. Whilst useful for interior applications, Grade 304 is not suitable for many marine or exterior applications. Grade 316 is also known as Marine Grade Stainless Steel. Grade 316 has 2-3% added Molybdenum which improves its corrosion resistance. Grade 316 is particularly resistant to salt water corrosion, therefore making it ideal for most exterior applications.

CORROSION DEFINITION
When stainless steel is produced, the chromium forms an outer oxide layer. As long as this layer remains intact the stainless steel remains passive. Once the oxide layer begins to breakdown, the stainless steel becomes active and its corrosion resistance is reduced. Rust stain is the obvious visible evidence of corrosion activity.

STAINLESS STEEL TEA STAINING

Stainless steel may suffer from a brown discolouration, or tea staining over time. This problem mostly occurs within about five kilometres of the beachfront, and worsens closer to the source. Other environmental factors may also contribute to the problem such as wind exposure, pollution and elevated temperatures. This problem is visual impairment only, and does not affect the structural strength or life of the stainless steel product.

MAINTENANCE AND PROTECTION

Washing stainless steel can help to reduce tea staining, and should be an important project design consideration. Best results are achieved with a soap/mild detergent and warm water wash - followed by a rinse of clean cold water. See the table below for recommended cleaning frequency.

RECOMMENDED CLEANING FREQUENCY TABLE

This represents a recommended frequency for cleaning of grade 304 stainless steel under general conditions.

ENVIRONMENT BUILDING ELEMENT

RESIDENTIAL - SUBURBAN & RURAL AREAS (NON-SEASIDE)

Roof and wall rain washed Airborne contaminants Accumulated Deposits At least twice per year Eaves, soffit and undereave wall rain washed Airborne contaminants At least once or twice per year Accumulated Deposits At least two or three times per year

SEASIDE/INDUSTRIAL AND SEVERE URBAN AREAS

Roof and wall rain washed Airborne contaminants At least once per year Accumulated Deposits At least twice per year Eaves, soffit and undereave wall rain washed Airborne contaminants At least two or three times per year Accumulated Deposits At least three or four times per year

RECOMMENDED CLEANING FREQUENCY (S30400)

At least once per year

NB: Cleaning frequency may be less for other grades but it depends on the surface finish and precise details of the structural design, its environment, cleaning methods and the expectation of performance.
