Bangalore Solid Waste Management Cess

Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will charge Solid Waste Management Cess along with BBMP property tax 2011-12. Property owners would get a form, along with the self-assessment property tax forms at BBMP revenue offices for Solid Waste Management Cess. The solid waste management cess has to be paid within 60 days from the commencement of the financial year 2011-12. For those who cannot pay the whole cess amount can pay in two installments as in the case of Property Tax.

What is Solid Waste Management Cess

A Solid Waste Management Cess is a tax levied by government or Bangalore civic body for solid waste management in the city and disposing them scientifically. According to BBMP Bangalore, the BBMP is spending Rs 200 crore annually for solid waste management in the city and every year the figures are increasing with rise in population. To manage the financial implications for the same, BBMP will charge Solid Waste Management Cess along with BBMP property tax for property owners in Bangalore. Solid Waste Management Cess will be collected based on the rates fixed by the BBMP. Solid Waste Management Cess is applicable for all buildings based on Plinth Area. Building outer wall to outer wall measurement is called Plinth area and it is the total builtup area of the buildings. However, there is no Solid Waste Management Cess for Vacant lands in Bangalore.

Solid Waste Management Cess for Apartment

Property owners of Bangalore need to fill in the forms and mention the dimension of the buildings on which cess will be levied. The form is free of cost and can be collected along with the property tax form. The rates will depend on the dimensions of the house/site for which property tax is paid. On refusal to pay solid waste management cess or garbage cess, the Palike might refuse to collect the property tax for the current year. The cess amount can pay in two installments or whole cess as in the case of Property Tax. Garbage cess will be collected based on the rates fixed by the BBMP. Following are rate for Solid Waste Management Cess for residential buildings.

Area up to 1000sft. Rs 10 per month 1001 sft to 3000sft. Rs 30 per month Above 3000sft. Rs 50 per month

The solid waste management cess for first installment has to be paid by May 30 and the second on or before November 29. Failing which BBMP officials will issue notices. The officials will assess the property of the defaulters who will then have to pay the cess with penalty. Those property owners who pay property tax 2011-12 and Solid Waste Management Cess for the whole year by April 30 will be eligible for Tax rebate of 5%.
