Foundation engineering
Branch of civil engineering concerned with linking structures to the Earth. Foundation engineers must model soil behaviour. This requires specialist knowledge: opportunities for varied work and individual contribution. Non-routine. Key area of offshore engineering. Oil, gas, wind, tidal energy reserves require offshore foundation structures.

Aims
To extend the knowledge and understanding of soil behaviour obtained from undergraduate level to the application of a range of foundation design problems.

Aims....
Having successfully completed the module, you will be able to demonstrate an understanding and knowledge sufficient to be able to: distinguish between different foundation types and their appropriate use be able to design shallow and deep foundations to carry ultimate loads be able to estimate deformations under working conditions understand the impact of intrusive investigation techniques on soil parameter determination

Aims ....
be able to select appropriate soil parameters from site investigation data have an appreciation of the advantages and limitations of advanced analytical techniques

Case for foundation design

What are the applied loads, V, H, M? What are the relevant soil (and groundwater) properties? Will the foundation fail under the worst plausible loading (ULS)? Will unacceptable settlements occur under the service load (SLS)?
