Thomas Hudson has a big
heart.
The Cherry Hill East sopho-
more lives near a neighbor who
attends the Larc School in Bell-
mawr, a non-profit special educa-
tion school, serving students with
disabilities from ages 3 to 21.
For the past few years, Hudson,
his family and friends have
turned their backyard into a
haunted Halloween destination.
The Hudsons Haunted Shed at-
tracted 300 visitors this past Hal-
loween and has raised $400.
In the past, Hudson has donat-
ed the money to the Larc School.
But last year, he had an even
bigger vision.
As he was nearing the time to
come up with an idea for his
Eagle Scout project, Hudson real-
ized he could use the money
raised from the Haunted Shed to
do something more specific at the
school.
After funds were raised and
ideas were brainstormed, Hudson
met with the director of the
school to discuss implementing a
sensory garden on the campus.
There was a garden in place,
but it was overgrown and under
maintained.
The point of the garden is so
students can experience it with
their different senses, Hudson
said. When we walked around
the school, we realized the garden
was not being used.
The garden he wanted to imple-
ment included wind chimes,
windmills, a birdhouse, flowers,
trees, plants like basil and mint,
potted plants, hanging baskets,
walking paths and tables for sit-
ting down and slowing down.
His dreams began to come to

On June 18, nearly 900
young men and women will
walk into Temple Universitys
Liacouras Center as students.
Theyll leave as members of
the Cherry Hill High School
East and Wests class of 2012.
East students graduate at 11
a.m.; West students graduate
at 4 p.m.
After four years of hard
work and dedication, princi-
pals at both schools said stu-
dents have much to be proud
of.
This was a dynamic group
of individuals who came to-
gether as a class at the end of
junior year. They truly devel-
oped a personality, said High
School West Principal Joseph
Meloche. Theyll leave a lega-
cy here at West.
This year at West, four grad-
uates will share the honor of
being valedictorian. Edgar Al-
iferov, Wendy Cheng, Jeremy
Rotblat and Johnny Kang will
share the prestigious title.
At the ceremony, Meloche
will offer some words of wis-
dom to the student body hes
seen come together over the
past year, noting students suc-
cesses in academics, athletics,
the arts and music.
My big advice to students
is to make sure they take time
to read over the summer and

said the class of 2012 has a prom-
ising future.
We had a great class trip to
Disney and we were strong in all
sports, especially boys basketball
and the boys track team was ex-
traordinary. We have great lead-
ers and academic achievement
and weve repeated that, with 12
national merit finalist and a num-
ber of successful fundraising ef-
forts, OBreza said. What can I
say, its a great class.
East named seven valedictori-
ans this year, including Winnie
Cheng, Emily Hsu, Jasmine
Hwang, Christopher Jung, Yun
Fei Liu, Gamsa Oh and Timothy
Yoon.
OBreza said he hopes the Class
of 2012 will take what it has
learned out into the world.
My hope is that they would
not be afraid of the challenges in
front of them and remember al-
ways they came from Cherry Hill
East, a place of privilege and op-
portunity and to know they are
well-prepared and confident,
OBreza said.
The class of 2012 from both
high schools follows a trail of stu-
dent successes in both academia
and athletics. The guidance de-
partment continues to compile
statistics that tell the story of the
graduating class of 2012, said
Susan Bastnagel, the districts
public information officer.
Last year, 207 graduating sen-
iors from the district received
scholarships, awards and grants
from the colleges they chose to at-
tend, totaling more than $15 mil-
lion.
Thirteen students from the
class of 2011 were National Merit
Scholarship Finalists.
Many 2011 graduates went on
to study at prestigious colleges
and universities, including Yale
University, Harvard University,
the University of Pennsylvania,
Massachusetts Institute of Tech-
nology, the College of William
and Mary, and many others.

Red-light camera for revenue
enhancement, not public safety
I would like to second the opinion of
John OReardon, as stated in a recent issue
of your newspaper. I, too, received an $85
ticket for not coming to a complete stop at
the red light while travelling east on Route
70 at Springdale Road. I was making a right
turn on to Springdale as the northbound
traffic on Springdale was making a left on
to Route 70 westbound. Since there was no
possibility of opposing traffic, I paused
briefly at the light and made a right turn
on Springdale. The video clearly showed
that I had not come to a complete stop, and
I was issued a violation for this. I had
hoped that the purpose of the camera was
to deter speeders on Route 70 from running
the red light and causing high-speed
accidents at the Springdale Road intersec-
tion.
Instead, it seems drivers who present no
danger whatsoever are being penalized for
obeying the spirit and intent, rather than
the letter, of the law.
I live near this intersection, and whenev-
er I am waiting there now, I count the num-
ber of cars in violation of the complete
stop law. By my estimate, the township
could (and perhaps does) issue hundreds of
$85 tickets each day for these harmless in-
fractions.
It seems the installation of the red-light
camera was more a matter of revenue en-
hancement than of public safety, and most
of the financial burden is being borne by
citizens who reside in the vicinity.

Why did township approve new
apartment construction site?
Township minds are you there?
Have you seen the Dwell Cherry Hill
Luxury Apartments construction site on
Route 70 West, just east of Springdale
Road? As a resident of Lakeview, I see it
daily and every day, I wonder where our
township managers were when this site
plan was put forward. I suspect they were
all out to lunch.
Several items about this site strike me as
extremely poor jurisprudence on the part
of those folks who we, the taxpaying resi-
dents, placed in positions to protect our
common interests.
For starters, the units are extremely
dense, more fitting to cramp metro real es-
tate than a suburban landscape. Although
still under construction, the location of the
apartment buildings nearest to Lakeview
homes bespeaks of poor township manage-
ment or influence with the developer.
It appears that in/out driveways will be
located on Birchwood Park Drive, allowing
the apartment dwellers to readily enter
and traverse the Lakeview community
adding traffic, noise and danger to our chil-
dren and residents.
In conjunction with this, I suspect it will
become almost impossible to make the al-
ready-busy left-hand turnoff from Route
70.
It is obvious that the much more open
and spacious community house area of the
apartments will be located on east side,
next to a commercial strip. If for nothing
more than aesthetic reasons, why didnt
our representatives suggest (demand) that
things be reversed?
Again, I ask how our zoning, planning
and other township officials could have ap-
proved such a disastrous site plan? It
seems they did not exert any foresight
or influence in rubber-stamping the proj-
ect.
Allowing the creation of such an un-
characteristic site in our community is
personally distressing and simply believed
not to be in our best interest.

ts been about two months since
Atlantic Citys new slogan was un-
veiled. So, we have to ask: Will you
Do AC? Have you Done AC? Does
the new slogan Do Anything for
You?
We like it. We think it fits with what
has to be the citys future if theres
any hope of survival: transforming it-
self into something other than a gam-
bling destination.
You may have seen some of the com-
mercials. We like those, too. They de-
emphasize the gambling aspect. We
cant remember if theres even one
shot of a slot machine in the ads.
Instead, they highlight the beach,
nightlife, food, entertainment and
more.
If you want to gamble, you have
plenty of alternatives the closest
being the lottery at the convenience
store down the street.
Want to go to a casino? Theyre all
over the place these days.
Want to vacation in a place where
there are not only all kinds of gam-
bling options, but also world-class en-
tertainment, food and accommoda-
tions, not to mention a ton of other
non-gambling things to do? Well, those
options are more limited.
And thats what AC has to become. It
has a lot of the essentials in place,
such as numerous casinos/resorts
grouped together with others only a
short drive away. All that has been
lacking is a coordinated vision and ef-
fort to have everyone pull together in a
drive to make visiting and staying in
AC a true event similar to what a
trip to Vegas is.
Think about it, those of you who
have visited Las Vegas. Theres a feel-
ing about that city. Theres an attitude.
Theres an anticipation as your vaca-
tion is about to begin.
And admit it: You do things in Vegas
you wouldnt do elsewhere. Or at least
you should.
Now the challenge is for AC to cre-
ate that same vibe so that people really
want to Do AC.
Will you Do AC?
The citys new slogan is a step in the right direction

Atlantic Citys new slogan is a winner.
Now it will be up to the city, the casi-
nos and the tourism efforts to make
sure that Doing AC is a desirable
thing to do.

More than 60,000 drivers travel
along Route 70 every day. This
major 6.5-mile thoroughfare
stretches through Cherry Hill
from end to end. Although Route
70 is a state highway maintained
by the Department of Trans-
portation, my administration

reflects the beauty of our neigh-
borhoods.
In 2011, the township began its
wildflower program, to beautify
Route 70 and transform our medi-
ans into more than just weeds
and grass.
Our wildflower efforts were
modeled after those on the At-
lantic City Expressway, where
each year in the late spring and
summer, thousands of beautiful,
lush, pastel wildflowers dot the
roadways landscape.
I am excited to announce that
we are once again partnering
with the South Jersey Trans-
portation Authority, the office of
state Sen. Jim Beach and the
Camden County Freeholders to
bring back this well-received pro-
gram. I want to thank these com-
munity leaders who have made
this program
possible.
Not only do
the wildflow-
ers improve
the landscape
for motorists
along Route
70, but they
also reduce
the need for
regular main-
tenance and
mowing. The project provides a
sustainable and visually attrac-
tive alternative to traditional rou-
tine lawn maintenance. This di-
rectly reduces the amount of fos-
sil fuels burned off into the at-
mosphere through mowing, re-
ducing our communitys carbon
footprint and saving taxpayer dol-
lars in the process.
This year, we have increased the
number of areas where wildflow-
ers will be planted, to cover over
three acres of median space in
Cherry Hill and stretching on to a
little under an acre in Pennsauken.
The South Jersey Transporta-
tion Authority recently began
split-seeding 17 designated areas
in Cherry Hill and two areas in
Pennsauken. This year, we re-
sponded to concerns about over-
growth and will be using a dwarf
species mix of wildflower, which
should grow to 24 inches high.
The Cherry Hill Department of
Public Works coordinated the
seeding effort with the Cherry
Hill and Pennsauken police de-
partments, as they helped to di-
rect traffic along the roadway
during the planting, seeding and
tilling of the wildflowers.
Germination for the wildflow-
ers is expected to take between
four and six weeks. In addition to
the wildflowers, Cherry Hill will
also continue to plant and main-
tain perennials along Route 70.
We are thankful to once again
have the support of the New Jer-
sey Department of Transporta-
tion. In an era of uncertainty
when it comes to funding for
transportation projects, the Wild-
flowers program provides a cost
savings for the state through a re-
duction in maintenance and a
cost effective opportunity for the
township to improve the appear-
ance of this roadway. I would also
like to thank our sponsors for
helping to support this program
and offset the cost to the taxpay-
ers of procuring, planting and
maintaining the wildflowers.
I look forward to seeing this
program as it grows in the com-
ing weeks and improves the view
for motorists as they travel along
Route 70 through Cherry Hill.

Camden County is now the Aging
and Disability Resource Connection
(ADRC). As an ADRC pilot office, we
are the fastest way for a senior to re-
ceive information and referrals, op-
tions on counseling and other
services. Seniors and their families
can also access ADRC on the Web at:

When you call our offices now,
well be answering by saying, Cam-
den County Aging and Disability Re-
source Connection, but our services
are still the same. What ADRC will do
is make it easier for people to know
their options. Whether you or a loved
one is facing a healthcare crisis, re-

planning ahead for future needs, the
ADRC connection can help by provid-
ing information thats easy to under-

Camden County Senior Citizen
Day Center Institutes Flat Fee
The Freeholder Board has insti-
tuted a flat fee of $5 per day for those
who attend the Camden County Sen-
ior Citizen Day Center. Before, seniors
were asked to contribute $5, $10 or $15
on an income-based sliding scale. We
made it one low, flat fee so seniors who
want to participate could do so easily.
For the $5 fee, seniors receive trans-
portation to and from the center, par-
ticipate in daily activities, arts and
crafts and special events throughout
the year. There are even
opportunities to go on
grocery or shopping
trips. Its open to
County residents age 60
or older and partici-
pants must be self-med-
icating, ambulatory and
socially functioning.

den County seniors actively attend,
with 55 to 65 seniors present each day.

2012 Senior Farmers Market
Nutrition Program
Eligible Camden County senior cit-
izens who meet the income require-
ments can receive up to four $5
checks, for a total benefit of $20 to use
at Farmers Markets held around the
County. Seniors are able to receive
these checks one time during the pro-
gram year. They must be used on New
Jersey grown fruits and vegetables
(not on Jams, nuts, etc.). They need to
present identification showing date
of birth and County residency. If
youre a one-person household, your
income must be less than $20,147
($1,679 per month) or less than $27,214
($2268 per month) in a two-person
household.

fruition when Hudsons father, an
architect himself, sat down with
his son to help him draw the
plans.
Soon after, Hudson typed a let-
ter seeking donations.
He signed, sealed and delivered
it or at least mail carriers did
to neighbors, family, friends and
members of his Boy Scout Troop,
a group hes been with since the
first grade.
Within a month, he said, Hud-
son had raised the $3,000 needed
to complete the project.
When spring finally arrived,
along with its warm winds, Hud-
son and his friends and family got
to work.
On May 5, he, his parents and
brother, and eight or so other
Scouts held their first workday,
installing the birdhouse into the
ground with cement, landscaping
and planting.
Hudson and his family went
back a week later to hang plants
and clean up.
Late last month, Hudson and
his family were part of a ribbon-
cutting ceremony at the Larc
School to kick off the grand open-
ing of the new garden.
They were very grateful. Stu-
dents thanked me. And some
tried tasting the plants, Hudson
said with a smile. We made sure
everything was non-toxic.
Hudsons mother, Colleen Hud-
son, was beaming with pride over
her sons accomplishments.
Im very proud. He imple-
mented it. He had a vision and
went for it and he really enjoyed
doing it, Colleen Hudson said.
Its nice to watch the process
take place, to see the camaraderie
and enlisting his friends. And to
see a finished product makes us
very proud.
Hudson now has to write up a
summary of the work he did,
which hell submit to his Scout-
ing district. The district will re-
view it and meet with him to dis-
cuss his project and the merit
badges hes received along the
way throughout his Scouting ca-
reer.
Hudson said he expects to be
honored sometime early next
year in the Eagle Scout Award
Court of Honor.
But for now, he says hes taking
pleasure in knowing he made a
small difference in the lives of
others.
It feels really good to know I
could do something like that to
make a kids day better, Hudson
said.

rand Academy Field Day in

40-year-old Durand Community
Services non-profit, multi-service
agency supporting children and
adults throughout South Jersey
with special needs through its
school, adult training service cen-
ters, group homes, a thrift shop,
respite services and other educa-
tional programs.

The Camden County Division
of Environmental Affairs is now
located in the Camden County
Parks Building within the new
Environmental Center, 1301 Park
Boulevard in Cherry Hill.
The Division of Environmen-
tal Affairs coordinates the coun-
tys recycling efforts, hosts elec-
tronic and household hazardous
waste collections, conducts na-
ture study programs, recently
launched the countys Bike Share
Program and much more
throughout the year.

will no longer have a presence on
Newton Lake Drive in
Collingswood.
The Environmental Center was
constructed as an addition to the
Camden County Parks Adminis-
tration Building utilizing green
building concepts. It is also home
to the Camden County Master
Gardeners Program and the 4-H.
The building uses a high-per-
formance, natural gas powered
mechanical system and features
interior spaces that are flooded
with daylight by skylights and
windows, said Freeholder Nash,
liaison to the Division of Envi-
ronmental Affairs. Rainwater is
collected from the roof of the
park building, and is stored in a
1,000 gallon cistern that is used
for landscape watering.
According to Nash, a vegetated
or green roof was installed on
the building that delivers better
energy performance, in part be-
cause the vegetated roof is much
cooler than a standard roof. Addi-
tionally, many of the materials
used in constructing the building
were recycled, and solar hot
water panels provide hot water. A
bike rack and shower were in-
stalled to encourage employees to
bike and walk to work.
Environmental
office moves
to new home
Thanks to a recently adopted
resolution by the Cherry Hill
Planning Board, Lourdes Health
System can now move forward
with its plans to retrofit the mas-
sive vacant building and lot on
the corner of Brace Road and
Route 70 into what will become a
54,000 square-foot ambulatory
care center.
For more than four decades,
the space located at 1 Brace Road
in Cherry Hill served as, among
other uses, a supermarket and de-
partment store to area shoppers.
Come early next year, the location
will service residents of southern
New Jersey and beyond with a
full-range of medical services de-
signed to provide a convenient
one-stop shopping experience
for patients.
Our goal as a healthcare
provider is to keep patients out of
the hospital and closer to home,
said Alexander J. Hatala, presi-
dent and CEO of Lourdes Health
System. The new ambulatory
care facility will allow us to
achieve this goal by expanding
healthcare services in the South
Jersey community so that pa-
tients can focus on many facets of
their health in one central loca-
tion.
The modern, state-of-the-art
center, developed by Rosewood
Real Estate Enterprises of Cher-
ry Hill, will be the primary office
location for Lourdes Cardiology
Services, with advanced subspe-
cialty programs such as its well-
regarded Congestive Heart Fail-
ure Center. It will also house
physician offices for cardiotho-
racic surgery and vascular sur-
gery services.
Other key services within
Lourdes Health System will be lo-
cated in the facility, as well, in-
cluding physician offices for or-
thopedics, sports medicine,
rheumatology and podiatry.
Metabolic services, such as
bariatric surgery and endocrinol-
ogy will be offered in the ambula-
tory care center, in addition to a
wide scope of diagnostic and
therapeutic services such as:
General radiology, CT, MRI,
dexa scan, mammography and ul-
trasound
Non-invasive heart testing, in-
cluding echo/stress testing and
nuclear stress test
Cardiac rehabilitation and
physical therapy
Holistic therapies such as
massage and acupuncture
Laboratory services

were recognized with the inaugu-
ral Deans Award for Excellence
in the Liberal Arts (DAELA).
Benjamin Rifkin, Dean of TCNJ's
School of Humanities and Social
Sciences, presented the honor.
Leah Ruediger, of Cherry Hill,
was recognized for her work not
only in the classroom, but also in
the community.
Leah has served as a peer tutor
in the Tutoring Center and, for
the past three years, she has led
Spanish Conversation Hours.
Leah is a member of both the
Spanish Club and the HSS Stu-
dent Advisory Council. She stud-
ied abroad both in Madrid, Spain,
and in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Leah worked with Dr. Elizabeth
Borland, as a student collabora-
tor, on the TAP program's re-
search on equity issues at TCNJ.
She also participated in MUSE, a
TCNJ-sponsored summer re-
search opportunity, conducting
research, together with Dr. Bor-
land, on the cultural impact of
the Madres de Plaza de Mayo in
Argentina. Leah is a member of
both Alpha Kappa Delta and
Sigma Delta Pi. In addition, she is
a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Leah is a member of the TCNJ
Honors Program and she recently
presented a paper titled "Working
a Double Shift: Differential Im-
pact of Work/Life Balance on
Male and Female Academics' Ca-
reers at an annual meeting of the
Northeast Regional Honors Con-
ference. Leah will be joining the
New York City Corp of Teach for
America this fall.
Leah was recognized with this
award because she posted a high
GPA on her way to graduating
with a degree in sociology, Span-
ish while also representing the
liberal arts mission at The Col-
lege of New Jersey. Exemplifying
this mission, Leah was able to
make a difference on campus and
in her community on top of
achieving academic excellence.
Her work included expanding
knowledge and partaking in cre-
ative activities as well as studying
and contributing to the solutions
of local, national and global prob-
lems.
Leah also carefully examined
cultural discourses from a num-
ber of viewpoints along with ex-
ercising ethical reasoning and
compassion.
Leah has excelled during her
