Australian Standard
Methods of chemical and physical testing for
the dairying industry
PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee on Chemical Analysis
of Dairy Products. After a periodic review, the Committee agreed that the specifications
for Babcock glassware have not undergone any technical changes. The Committee
recommended a new edition to supersede AS 2300.1.4.1 — 1983.
Attention is drawn to the fact that although this Standard supersedes
AS 2300.1.4.1 — 1983 and AS N26 Part 1— 1969, it is emphasized that existing glassware
complying with these two Standards still comply with the requirements of Australian
standard methods for determining fat by the Babcock method. The accuracy tolerances
remain the same and analytical results using glassware complying with all three Standards
will be equivalent.
The term ‘normative’ has been used in this Standard to define the application of the
appendix to which it applies. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral part of a Standard.

1.1 SCOPE This Section specifies requirements for Australian standard test bottles for
Babcock testing. Types included are as follows:
(a) 8% bottle for testing milks, including homogenized and flavoured milks.
(b) 10% bottle for testing milks, including homogenized and flavoured milks.
(c) 0.5% bottle for testing skim milk and separated milk.
(d) 2% bottle for testing buttermilk.
(e) 50%, 9 g bottle for testing cream.
(f) 60%, 9 g bottle for testing cream.
The bottles are illustrated in Figures 1.1 to 1.3.
1.3 MATERIAL The bottles shall be made from clear borosilicate glass which shall be
well annealed and resistant to the thermal shocks incidental to the method. They shall be
as free as possible from striae and similar defects.
1.4 DIMENSIONS The overall height of a bottle shall be 160 ±5 mm. The external
diameter of the bulb shall be not greater than 37 mm. The other dimensions of the bottle
shall be as shown in Figures 1.1 to 1.3. The wall thickness shall be adequate to render the
bottle sufficiently robust for the purpose for which it is to be used, and shall nowhere be
less than 0.8 mm.
1.5 NECK
1.5.1 All bottles The neck shall be circular in cross-section and uniform in bore over
sufficient of its length to permit compliance with the requirements of Clause 1.10. The
neck shall be vertical when the bottle is standing on a level surface.
1.5.2 Bottles for testing milk The neck shall be flared into a funnel shape with an
external diameter at the top of not less than 10 mm (see Figure 1.1).
