Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Delhi MEL110 (Graphic Science) Practice problems for Auxiliary Views of Solids 1.

Draw the projections of a cone (diameter of base 50mm and axis length 65mm) standing on its base on the ground and axis perpendicular to the H.P. Draw the auxiliary projection of the cone on an AIP so that the base is seen as an ellipse with minor axis of 35mm. Draw a secondary auxiliary view of the cone on a secondary auxiliary plane that makes 450 with the frontal plane. 2. Draw the projections of a hexagonal pyramid with its hexagonal base (of side 20mm) perpendicular to both the H.P. and F.P. One of the edges of the base is parallel to H.P. and perpendicular to the F.P. The axis of the pyramid is 60mm long and is parallel to both the planes. Draw the primary auxiliary view of the pyramid on an AVP such that one of the triangular faces of the pyramid is seen as a line in the primary auxiliary view. Draw the secondary auxiliary view of the pyramid on a secondary auxiliary plane that makes 600 with the H.P. 3. A cylinder is lying on one of its generators with axis parallel to both the planes. Project the cylinder on an AVP so that the generators of the cylinder are seen reduced in length by 50%. Then project a secondary auxiliary view on a secondary auxiliary plane that makes 500 with the H.P. Take diameter of the base as 50mm and length of axis equal to 70mm. 4. A frustum of pentagonal pyramid is shown in the Figure 1. Draw auxiliary view of the frustum so that the view shows true angle between the surfaces edst and cdsr.

5. Consider a solid shown in the Figure 2. Attempt the following. a) Draw an auxiliary view of the solid such that the surface efgh is seen as a square with 25mm side. b) Obtain another auxiliary view of the solid such that the surface aehd is seen in its true shape. c) Find the shortest distance between the corner b and the imaginary line joining corners e and c. 6. Draw primary auxiliary view of the solid shown in Figure 3 on an AVP making an angle of 600 with the frontal plane. Project the secondary auxiliary view on a secondary auxiliary plane making an angle of 600 with H.P.

7. Consider a solid shown in Figure 4. Project an auxiliary view of the solid such that the view shows true angle between the line joining corners 1 & S and the line joining corners S&3. 8. For the solid in Figure 4, find the true angle between the line joining corners 1& S and the line joining the corners P&3. Also find separately, the shortest between the two lines. 9. Consider an object shown in Figure 5. Draw an auxiliary view of the solid which will show the true angle of inclination between line joining points 1 and C and the plane ADB.

10. A wooden square prism (side of base=50mm and axis 80mm long) is placed on one of its rectangular faces with axis parallel to both frontal and horizontal planes as shown in Figure 6. A corner of the square prism is cut in such a way that the surface ABC is oblique and seen in top view as aTbTcT and in front view as aFbFcF as shown in the figure. A carpenter scribes a circle of 20mm diameter with a compass on the surface ABC at its center. Show this circle in all the three views. aT
