Accidental Festival 2012

Since its creation in 2005, the festival has welcomed over 200 international guests and artists. It has taken pride in giving new and emerging performers the chance to work alongside those already well-established in their fields. Special guests have included world renowned directors Katie Mitchell, Simon McBurney, Liz LeCompte, Richard Schechner, Anne Bogart and Joel Scott. The festival has an international impact, attracting applications from the USA, Spain, France, Slovakia, Estonia, Finland and Africa among many others. This year the festival returns to the Roundhouse with the aim to be bigger, bolder and to reach more people than ever before.

The Seventh Accidental Festival

Welcome to the 7th Accidental Festival. Since we began, we have travelled to many venues across London before finding our happy home here at the Roundhouse in Camden. We have seen almost 1000 artists perform with us over the past seven years and every one of them has been really special. This year we welcome over 60 new performers to our Accidental family from almost 400 applications, the largest number ever received. So thank you for coming to support them and invest in their work, both with your time and your money. We really mean that, we dont take anything for granted and your support means so much. Its been an exciting and busy year for the festival team. They have been awarded the Inspire Mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme, exceeded their crowdfunding targets through WeDidThis, and were awarded a grant from the Fidelio Theatre Trust. Enjoy the Accidental Festival 2012, I hope that you see something new, talk to someone youve not yet met and that you have a great experience with our team. Very best wishes, Karl Rouse Co-creator, Accidental Festival Pathway Leader for Performance Arts Central School of Speech & Drama University of London

Welcome!
As Executive Director, it has been my job to work with this fantastic team of producers and artists to make sure that the seventh Accidental Festival is the best one yet. Our programme excites me more and more every time I look at it. Kids (big and small) can play giant Jenga and Connect Four on the Terrace whilst enjoying some poetry or music in our Performance Shed. We have comedy companies improvising shows based on your suggestions, were welcoming back AF success story - Theatre Re, were hosting the Student Puppet Festival and of course, were doing what we do best - provide a platform for new and emerging artists to show their work at this brilliant venue. Id like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to all the staff at Central, the Roundhouse, our festival mentors, everyone who supported us through our crowdfunding campaign and of course you, the audience! Weve all worked really hard and hope that you enjoy being our audience as much as weve enjoyed being the producers. Thank you so much for coming. If you see us around, please say hello! Wed love to hear what you think. Enjoy! Louise Ryder Executive Director Accidental Festival 2012

A few words from Theatre Re

We performed a 30-minute work in progress of The Gambler as part of the Accidental Festival 2011. From there we got Research and Development funding from Arts Council England and then the show enjoyed a very successful run for two weeks at The Space last November. This year we are back at the Accidental Festival with the full show, we will then organize a tour across London (Cockpit Theatre, Jacksons Lane) to then go up to Edinburgh and perform The Gambler as part of the Fringe. The Accidental Festival had an enormous influence on the development of the company over the past two years. It gave us a first stage, something to aim for to force ourselves to put something together, and then we were able to build on that experience to go further artistically and production-wise. It is not easy to take the risk to program an emerging theatre company, which you have never heard of, and who is trying to sell a show that does not even exist yet. So we are very thankful to the Accidental Festival team for taking that risk and allowing us to start making work. Guillaume Pig For Theatre Re

The Gambler
Theatre Re

An enthralling visual tale on the edge of mime and theatre, combining movement, live music and new writing. The Gambler is the story of Edgar, an old man trapped in his past. As he confronts his addiction, he wonders if his decisions were truly his own. Each spin of the wheel recalls the promise of a life he could have had. He gambles to remember, he gambles to forget. The Gambler is supported by National Lottery through Arts Council England and Haringey Council. The performance will be followed by a Q&A with Theatre Re. Studio Theatre 20.3021.55 5

FRIDAY 1 JUNE

Dance 1:1

Charlie Dixon Dance Company, Emco Dance, SAAD Dance, NineBOBNote

Think Outside (SAAD Dance) looks at man in his many states, struggling in the world of media bombardment. Can we deconstruct ourselves and start afresh, free from constraint and control? As Yet Unknown (NineBOBNote) is a piece inspired by women, exploring the power of female sexuality and the seduction of freedom of choice. It draws on personal experience in an attempt to embody current issues in both the performers and the audience. Leave No Stone (Emco Dance) asks if we can physically deconstruct who we are, what makes us unique emotionally, mentally and physically. As the dancers explore their own individuality, intimate duets weave between them emerging in collisions or moments of swarming. Studio Theatre 19.0021.30 10/8

Dance 1:1 presents works by some of the most prominent dance companies currently working in London, compred by Gitta Wigro, Relationship Manager, Dance, Arts Council England. Gitta will also moderate a Q&A panel discussion after the show. Panelists include Betsy Gregory, Artistic Director of Dance Umbrella, and Charlie Dixon, choreographer. Wise Man (Charlie Dixon Dance Company) combines Charles Darwins theories with highly technical and explosive movement, where relationships develop and species intertwine whilst fighting for survival.

The Scat Pack

Cravings of Intimacy & Solitude explores what we want and need in order to formulate who we are. This duet is full of playful and fragile moments that look at our relationships, preconceptions of one another and the tension created between our differing needs. Choreographer and founder of Zoo Nation, Kate Prince, has selected the music to Long Way Home to encourage a creative process in which the dancers respond to and draw on the lyrics of songs by Ed Sherin, Wretch 32 & Daly. The many and varied interpretations of the words are the starting point for the final work created by Cando2. Studio Theatre 17.0017.30 5

The Ninth Continent is the third in a series of site-responsive endurance performances inspired by Michael Hanekes film The Seventh Continent. By using every element of its setting as a means to an end, each performance in this series explores domesticity, monotony and frustration. MENCHcollective is a group of interdisciplinary performance artists who met at Central School of Speech & Drama and have been working together since 2010. The Hub 18:0018.45 5

The Fish and the Denim River

Theatre Eclectic

Merging film, puppetry, physical theatre and live action, Resuscitate brings you the story of Pentheus - a stubborn king unwilling to accept a new and exciting God, Dionysus. Intent on proving his worth as a deity and with the help of his chorus of puppets, Dionysus sends the women of the city into a drink induced frenzy. Blinded by rage and arrogance, Pentheus will stop at nothing to see the deviant Dionysus destroyed. Studio Theatre 11.0012.00 5

Stories which reveal a glamorous portrayal of successful life-through-art, or a bitter shattering of our idols? A combination of puppetry, images, music, multimedia and British Sign Language, Somethings Gotta Give is a glamorous yet gritty reflection of those idols we love to hate; a stunning yet sickening exploration of the celebrity. They create meaningful interactive experiences for audiences and participants. (Piece of the Pie Theatre, 2011) The Clore 14.0014.55 5

Transforming the Studio Theatre into a pool of fantasy, Theatre Eclectic revises the Grimm Brothers story through the poetry and splendour of a fairytale world, but adding an eco-friendly twist. With an underlying current of the worlds pressing environmental issues, The Fish and the Denim River leaves the audience with a bittersweet aftertaste, asking them to question their role in the global community. Airport Benjamin Lyon-Ross

Crime of the Century is a dynamic and explosive piece of dance theatre created in response to the tragic deaths of three teenagers, including Shaquille Smith, who in 2008 was the youngest child to die as a result of knife crime in the UK, aged just 14. Using words, movement and projection alongside a contemporary score of hip-hop and dance music, Crime of the Century is based on interviews with perpetrators, victims, families, surgeons, police officers and ex-offenders. The performance will be followed by a workshop open to audience members only. For more information see p. 12. The Hub 11.0013.00 7

You probably board the tube on your way to work. The same every day: sweaty, sultry and silent. But today is different. Fancy boarding a train where youll be accosted by a blonde bombshell? Or have a busker melodically drool over your every move? This train goes to Box Junction, where desires are packaged into a simple box. Fancy it? Then mind the gap and board the tube for this immersive ride with Wind-Up Collective. The Hub 14:0015:00 5

Set in Manchesters Northern quarter, Airport is a stark and contemporary observation of modern youth, telling an authentic story about love, family, desire and the devastating effect that dreams can have on social mobility. The play happens over one night in which we see the tragic unwinding of the relationship between Tom, a dreamer from Wythenshawe, and Hazel, a magnetic student from the south. Airport is a poignant exploration of family and ambition, told through a piece of tense, humorous and heartbreaking new writing. Studio Theatre 16:1517:30 5

Blending beautiful live music and delicate physical performance, You Obviously Know What Im Talking About is a joyous theatrical experience about those days when if anything can go wrong it will and inevitably at the worst possible moment. COMMUNITY & EDUCATION

This year, our Community and Education (C&E) team have worked with a number of organisations to bring arts and theatre out into the community. We have worked alongside Centrals existing Community Liaison Officer with students at Westminster Kingsway College to encourage them to aim high. Through engaging in performance workshops with youth workers at Somerstown Community Centre we have introduced new approaches to learning and through our work with Pimento Community Project we were successful in providing an environment where an 11-year-old boy could read aloud for the first time ever! Not only this, but we have programmed a number of workshops and performances which encompass the values of the C&E Department and showcase the work of companies who are also passionate about making theatre accessible and fun!
Facilitators: Richard Harrison (Central) and Louise Ryder (AF) The workshop will start with some warm-up games, followed by a visioning exercise and a discussion about the students responses. It will also focus on applications and the interview or audition process for various courses at Central School of Speech & Drama. The Hub 9.3012.30 CLOSED EVENT
