The Enabler: LEADERSHIP What is a leader? A leader is basically someone who leads others. But being a leader is different from being an effective leader. A leader would simply command what s/he thinks is right while an effective leader would seek for options, listen to others opinions then execute. This is because an effective leader should possess 3Ps Person, Purpose and People. He is a person because s/he must set an example so that others will be motivated to follow him. This person, the leader, must then be committed to the purpose by having a vision and being able to plan as to how the vision is to be actualized. Of course, a leader wouldnt be a leader without having any followers. This is why it is important to gain the trust of your people. These people, the followers, would then help the leader actualize the vision and thus, accomplish the goals.

The leadership in the EFQM model is explained as to how leaders within an organization is able to achieve their stated mission and vision along with the processes, developments and facilitation among other members. Leaders are also expected to develop values required so to carry out sustainable success for the organization by developing organizational values and systems through the leaders actions and behaviors. Also, leaders are expected to hold firmness towards its purpose whenever change is inevitable. However, when certain circumstances permit the leader to change, leaders must be able to successfully change the path of the organizations and inspire its members to follow as well.

The leadership criterion is divided into four sub criteria: Leaders develop the mission, vision, values and ethics acting as

role models Leaders define, monitor, review and drive the improvement of the organizations management system and performance. Leaders engage with external stakeholders Leaders reinforce a culture of excellence with the organizations people Leaders ensure that the organization is flexible and manages change effectively

Excellent organizations have leaders who shape the future and make it happen, acting as role models for its values and ethics and inspiring trust at all times. They are flexible, enabling the organization to anticipate and react in a timely manner to ensure the ongoing success of the organization. EFQM ORGANIZATION Summary: Being a leader would also mean to be a good follower; without being a good follower, one could not be a leader. Leaders are role models. They develop and implement the Mission, Vision and ethical values of the organization Leaders handle meet the needs of both his internal and external people. A leader would not be a leader if not for his followers. An organization would not be an organization if not for a leader and a follower. Leaders are adapters: they, together with their people should be trained and able to adapt to change when necessary Fundamental Concept: Achieving Balanced Results One of the fundamental concepts of EFQM is Achieving Balanced Results. Achieving balanced results would not simply mean achieving the results. Achieving balanced results would mean being able to plan, at the same time meet the set of balanced results established by the organization, which in return would imply being able to meet the organizations Mission as well as advancing towards the organizations Vision. This Balanced Set of Results would be achieving both the long term and the short-term needs of the organizations stakeholders. Whats even better would be not just to

satisfy the stakeholders needs but to exceed them as well. Achieving balanced results would not just need planning and visioning; achieving balanced results would also require leaders to make timely decisions. With this, achieving balanced results is not as simple as getting the word done, it also takes into consideration the quality of the work done, how fast and how did one achieve such results. Thus, achieving balanced results would mean to be both efficient and effective. FOR THE POWERPOINT Slide 1 What is a leader?
