Ridding Bali of the Plastic Scourge

Environmental Group Urges Bali to Ban Plastic Bags
A non-profit group PlasticFree Bali wants the island's administration to ban the use of plastic bags. Reminding the provincial government of its own pledge to make Bali plastic-free by 2013, quoted in Bali Daily (The Jakarta Post), Tina Stockport, the group's spokesperson, said banning the bag is an obvious first step in addressing Bali's garbage problems, but such a sweeping measure requires strong government commitment to enforce it, along with widespread public support. The group has outlined a variety of steps towards making Bali plastic-free, including tough rules and regulations with fines for illegal dumping together with rigorous public education programs on the danger plastic poses to the environment. Pointing to the success of India and China in reducing plastic waste, Stockport is confident that Bali can follow suit. Supporting that view is the fact that Bali launched a Bali Clean and Green program in 2010 announcing a 2013 goal for climates such as Indonesia. This is merely a cosmetic solution that has dangerous long-term consequences and costs to both human and environmental health. Biodegradable bags contain high levels of heavy metals to promote degradation. These toxins are introduced into the food chain, seeping into farming land and poisoning the many animals and marine life that ingest them, said Stockport. Pointing out that plastic bags used only once and for a very short time, become a permanent part of the environment for 1,000 years to come. G o v e r n m e n t o ff i c i a l s estimate that Bali produces some 1,000 cubic meters of plastic waste every day, a figure representing 10% of the island's daily garbage. The head of the Bali Environmental office, Anak Agung Alit Sastrawan, appreciated the efforts of Bali Plastic-Free but expressed doubts that the overwhelmingly popular use of plastic bags could be halted. At best, said Sastrawan, Bali could try to provide biodegradable bags

s u c c e s s f u l implementation. Saying Bali's selfproclaimed program is falling behind schedule, Stockport said: In the three years to date, evidence resulting from these initiatives is lagging, She also condemned government plans to subsidize the use of bio-degradable bags, saying: Promoting biodegradable bags will actually increase the overall amount of plastic waste, as shoppers believe these bags are an environmentally friendly option and will not bother trying to reduce their use. Surely stopping plastic at its source, rather than creating waste in the first place, would be the most effective method of tackling the waste problem. Stockport contends that biodegradable bags are a ruse, and never truly degrade, especially in humid tropical

Archaeologists, excavating a monastery near the Black Sea city of Sozopol, discovered the skeletons which were buried in a pagan ritual that they said was aimed at keeping the men from turning into vampires. Prime Minister David Cameron accidentally left his daughter behind in a country pub after lunchtime drinks with friends following a mixup over which car she was meant to be going home in, his Downing Street office said.

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

elcome again folks and let's get straight into the latest edition. I see, and am happy to let you all know, just in case you didn't see, the Mighty Pies are on top of the ladder after the last weekends footy, so that basically set the tone for the rest of the week for me. A fantastic win over Melbourne. I must admit I had a little trouble watching the game as I was lucky enough to escape to the land down under for a sanity break, but, in doing so didn't know what to do on Friday night as there isn't too many places in town showing the footy live, Aaliasj@kutaweekly.com nor serving a huge roast, so I was a little bit lost for action. My craving was sorted after I realized you can watch the game, well listen to it anyway, live on the official A.F.L website, which I did. Apparently you can get all the action live on Foxtel if you sign up for the full Monty and you can watch it until you are blue in the face, in the comfort of your own home, but why would I take that package when I'll be back in paradise, soaring with the eagles in no time. I am actually enjoying being able to drink water directly from the tap, although you can actually do that now in Bali at a few places that have invested in their own infrastructure, and I really am enjoying being able to wonder around the Coles store buying lots of stupid little things that you just can't get in Bali, Twisties, Promite, crumpets or Heinz spaghetti in the can etc etc and in saying that am wishing I took the extra baggage allowance for my return trip. I am a Platinum flyer and get 52 kilos each flight between Bali and home and always seem to need to pay a small extra in excess luggage each time. I guess I could leave the Chiko Rolls at home but just couldn't bear to leave them all alone in the deep freeze till my next visit, so in the suitcase they go. Will someone please start a shop up in Bali that sells all Australian stuff, I'm certain it would be a winner. I will raise one thing that did annoy me this week during my stay in Aussie, I usually sit and enjoy the Sunday newspaper each week, if and when I'm home, and I like to sit in my sunroom and enjoy the morning light and have a slow breakfast, and basically catch up on what the Sunday rag has to say. Sometimes it's a great time to catch up with the family, anyways, in doing so last weekend I see two full pages on Bali, which of course, being that I'm interested and invested on the island would be sure to read. Anyways I kick off into the stories with eagerness until I work out that the writer is suggesting that Bali has become the newest and greatest sex holiday destination in the world. Now I have digested this rot and disagreed emphatically and after a few sips on my coffee continued on with the pages on Bali to find that they are now talking about the island being an easy target and heavily visited destination for many Pedophile rings. Now, I will say that this isn't something I care to read about within the pages of this paper and trust that we will never have to, but, With this I have just about done a back flip as for the time I've been coming to Bali, I have not seen any evidence of this kind of thing happening. I read on about how a fellow from Germany had conned his way into a village and done terrible things to a few of the kids and wonder in disbelief that he escaped with his life, as some of the big Bali lads I know just wouldn't have taken any pity nor offered any quarter I'm sure of it. One could only imagine what the outcome would have been if the same fellow had been exposed in a small town in Australia?? I can hear old mate at the end of the bar already Go get me a sharp knife from the kitchen will ya I'd say it would have been curtains for the maggot and there would be no threat of any reoffending, anyways, what I didn't like was that in my mind, as I'm sure with most people's thinking, I had heard and read different papers or listened to different television stations explaining that it has been happening somewhere in the world for years, but I never thought about it, nor ever imagined it would become an issue for The island Of The Gods I seriously can't write what I would really like to on the subject, as along with you all, it make me very angry and brings a certain violence to the thought paterns, and am sure that there will be someone that will be upset that I have inferred I have friends that would cut you up into little pieces with a sharp knife, those such that I will apologize right now, as I dont, however, I just couldn't believe this sickness has arrived and is going un-reported. I hope the powers that be in Bali do their absolute best to stamp this out straight away. I am sure they will have the support of the wider expat community and the many families that visit the island. Terrible Terrible stuff. Ok punters with that off my chest I will move along with my week and kick back in the cold of Australia for a little while longer. I hope the most of you don't get in the way of an out of control locomotive and stay safe, happy, healthy and do always remember, it's so simple to be wise, just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it. Enjoy your week, ALIASJ..

Rectangle Oreos and cucumber gum, made in China for China

There are no bad ideas inside Kraft Foods' biscuit research lab in China, according to director Maggie Wang. Not even the chewing gum Oreo cookie that a colleague asked her to bite into one day.
Instead of creamy white "stuff" in the centre, a glob of gum was sandwiched neatly between a pair of Oreo's iconic dark chocolate biscuits. "The taste was ok. The problem was that you could not swallow it," said Wang, a Kraft food scientist with two decades of experience in the biscuit industry. Investment may be powering the Chinese economy but experiments like the gum cookie - which, for better or worse, never made it to store shelves - are a reminder that consumption is rising sharply. That means it is vital for food companies to get the right products into the market, particularly with demand dimming in the United States and Europe. A survey published earlier this year by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, the largest foreign trade group in China, showed that for about three in five of its member companies, the top priority here is producing or sourcing goods in China for the Chinese market. "The stereotype is we're exporting jobs and everything's being manufactured with cheap labor and sent back, and that's not the case at all," said Kent Kedl, Managing Director of China and North Asia for the consultancy Control Risks, which collaborated on the AmCham survey. China, with its 1.3 billion people, overtook the United States as the world's biggest new car market three years ago and became the top grocery market last year. The Boston Consulting Group said in a report this week that it expects China to be the world's No. 1 market for luxury goods by 2015. A RECTANGULAR OREO KFC, a Yum! Brands chain and one of the first Western fast food restaurants to hit China in the 1980s, has long been recognized as a pioneer, with offerings like rice porridge with preserved egg along with fried chicken. But many Western companies resisted going local when they first came to China, in part because they mistakenly believed their well-known international brands would automatically succeed there. That mindset has changed, and companies now routinely tailor products or marketing campaigns. "It's probably quite hard to find examples of people who don't localize," said Paul French, chief China analyst at market research firm Mintel. BMW developed stretch sedans in China because the wealthy like to sit in the back and be chauffeured. Wrigley's sells cucumber-mint flavored sticks of gum and Haagen Dazs mooncakes have been a hit since their introduction in 1997. At the Kraft R&D facility, which is half science lab, half kitchen, researchers in white coats dabble with seasonings such as "California Cheeseburger" and Cheeseburger" and "Chicken Feet With Pickled Chili". About 95 percent of the ideas that are floated never make it to market, Wang said. Some notable misfires: a red bean paste Oreo (kids didn't like it) and a Ritz cracker flavored like fish boiled in spicy Sichuan peppercorn oil (too local). But the trial and error can pay off, sometimes beyond China's borders. Blue jeans giant Levi Strauss & Co introduced its Denizen brand, launched in Shanghai in 2010 and designed to fit Chinese body types and trends, to the United States last year, for example. In 2006, Kraft created a rectangular Oreo wafer cookie that soon became the best selling biscuit item in China, said Shawn Warren, President of Kraft Foods China. Now it's being spiffed up for a return to the country where the famed cookie sandwich got its start 100 years ago. "We've done some tests in the U.S. and still think they need to optimize and tweak it but stay tuned and maybe we'll see it in the U.S., maybe in the not so distant future," said Warren. Some day the gum-cookie concept may even resurface, but it would probably be flipped on its head as gum that tastes like an Oreo, Wang said.

Radiation shall I compare thee to an angry Japanese wife

A Japanese research agency has dropped a controversial public relations campaign aimed at educating women about nuclear safety that compared radiation to the screaming voice of an angry wife.
The Japanese Atomic Energy Agency devoted a page on its website to an effort to "make the hard words used in the nuclear power industry" more easy to understand, particularly for women. The page, which included a cartoon of an angry, fist-waving wife and her cowering husband, compared the wife's yell to radiation. It continued the metaphor by saying that the women's increasing agitation could be compared to "radioactivity", while claiming the wife herself was comparable to "radioactive material". The webpage, first published in 2010, was dropped after the agency received dozens of complaints. "I have no idea why this page suddenly attracted people's attention, but we would have deleted it earlier had we known about this page," said Yusuke Uehara, a spokesman for the government-affiliated agency which conducts nuclear research, including work on safety. "This discriminates against women, which is inappropriate." All 50 of Japan's remain offline after a series of meltdowns and hydrogen explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant forced evacuations and renewed scrutiny of Japan's policy towards atomic energy. Tokyo Electric Power, the operator of the Fukushima plant, said last month that the radiation released in the first days of the Fukushima disaster was almost 2-1/2 times the amount first estimated by safety regulators. The accident was the world's worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986. The "radioactive wife" cartoon had been created by a group of six women who live near Tokaimura, site of a 1999 nuclear accident at a uranium reprocessing plant.

Idaho drinkers can lift a glass to Five Wives Vodka

Under the threat of a lawsuit, Idaho's liquor division partially lifted a ban on Five Wives Vodka imposed after the state deemed the drink's allusion to polygamy was an affront to Mormons, officials said.
Idaho this year denied permission to Utahbased Ogden's Own Distillery to stock Five Wives at state-operated stores, and also denied the distiller the opportunity to sell the vodka to residents who might ask a bar or store to special order it. The state now has removed the ban on specialorder sales of Five Wives, although it still will not allow regular sales at state-operated stores. Ogden's Own had threatened a lawsuit, and accused Idaho officials of constitutional violations, including interfering with interstate commerce and restraining free speech.

HOROSCOPE PREDICTION 14 June - 20 June 2012

Aries March 21 to April 20 Look out world! Rampaging Rams are in a gung-ho, take-noprisoners kind of mood and you won't appreciate others telling you what to do. Unpredictable Uranus [moving through Aries] continues to send surprises your way. Be inspired by Donald Trump [born on June 14] What separates the winners from the losers is how a person reacts to each new twist of fate. Taurus April 21 to May 21 Wealth planet Jupiter jumps into your money zone, so you're [potentially] in for a lucky financial year as long as you don't fritter away extra cash. If you are extravagant, you'll quickly blow any benefits. [And hold off making major money moves until after Venus moves forwards on June 28]. Friday and Saturday are the days to indulge in the good things in life. Gemini May 22 to June 21 With the Sun and Venus in Gemini, loved ones will get a mega-dose of your quick-witted quips but be careful that casual chatter doesn't denigrate into damaging gossip. It's imperative that you capitalize on the lucky opportunities that prosperity planet Jupiter sends your way, as it moves through your sign. The next 12 months is the time to let your versatile talents shine! Cancer June 22 to July 23 Using guilt, subversive tactics or emotional bribes to get what you want is never a good idea especially this week. If you do, expect others to reciprocate with manipulative behavior of their own. Saturday's a super day for socializing, whereas Sunday favors spending time with a very special person you. Solitude is soul food for stressed Crabs at the moment. Leo July 24 to August 23 Don't think small- it's time for confident Cats to wish upon a star! With Jupiter [planet of abundance] moving into your hopes and wishes zone, make your dreams for the future as fabulous as possible. Saturn charges up your motivation levels mid-week, so you need a challenging project to channel your energy into. With a disciplined approach, you'll zoom ahead. Virgo August 24 to September 23 Tricky Mercury/Uranus/Pluto aspects will increase your tendency to worry and obsess this week. So take a chill pill and calm down, otherwise you'll wear yourself out. With Jupiter visiting your career zone for the next 12 months, things are about to liven up at work. Some Virgos can expect a promotion or improved conditions, while others will just be very busy. Libra September 24 to October 23 With vampy Venus reversing through flirtatious Gemini, you're at your fabulously flirtatious best. Be careful what you pray for though you might just get it! Jupiter jumps into your travel and adventure zone mid-week, so you can look forward to a fabulous trip sometime over the next 12 months. Love and travel are also lusciously linked [especially after June 28]. Scorpio October 24 to November 22 You'll feel compulsive mid-week, so it will be difficult to communicate in a clear and cohesive way. And, if you hold onto loved ones too tightly, they'll try to escape from your stubborn Scorpio grip. However it is a suitable time to study, do research, or dig up a well-hidden secret that has others mystified. If you're bored at work, aim to shake up your daily routine. Sagittarius November 23 to December 21 Prepare to be at your sexy Sagittarian best, as Jupiter [your ruling planet] powers into your partnership zone. So it's time to up the romance factor and make your [neglected?] partner feel extra special. Singles don't sit around passively waiting for your soul mate to appear. You need to be passionately proactive as you get out on the prowl, looking for lasting love. Capricorn December 22 to January 20 Positive Sun/Saturn aspects make for a pleasant and productive week [as long as you can keep your compulsive Capricorn side under control]. Business deals and real estate transactions are favored on Friday, as your instincts lead you in the right direction. If you are fair and flexible, then you'll be able to patch up problems with a fractious family member. Aquarius January 21 to February 19 With Jupiter energizing your entertainment zone, you're in the mood to mix and mingle to the max. Attached Aquarians a little less resistance and a lot more romance are what's needed at the moment. Singles it's the perfect week to take time off work so you can smell the roses and circulate socially. If a friend invites you on an adventure, don't hesitate to say yes! Pisces February 20 to March 20 Many Pisceans are in the mood to redecorate, renovate or relocate [preferably somewhere with more space]. And have you been pulling your weight at home? Make sure you do your fair share of household duties, otherwise dirty dishes could lead to domestic dramas. Singles don't let a sudden dreamy attraction turn into a long-term nightmare. And don't mistake lust for love.

ALL ABOUT BALI

SARASWATI DAY
Saraswati Day is celebrated on the16th June, the very last day of the Balinese Pawukon calendar, being the Saturday of its last week, Watugunung.
Dewi Saraswati is generally referred to as Goddess of 'Science & Knowledge'. Dewi Saraswati is the female counterpart of the Balinese god Dewa Brahma, the manifestation of the Almighty Infinite Spirit as the Creator. The spiritual symbolism of Saraswati T h e ma te ri a l i sti c w o rl d views that dominate the modern world we live in, have caused considerable misinterpretations of the religious symbols found in Balinese Hinduism. The main reason for this is a general loss of the ability to think in 'parallels', to communicate in s y m b o l s a n d analogies. Instead, modern man tends to interpret most religious symbols literally. Nowadays the Knowledge/Science symbolized by Saraswati is generally interpreted as pure secular, scientific knowledge; at libraries offerings are made for books and other important written materials, such as the lontar; books and (written) language are seen as the vessels of secular, scientific knowledge. At the schools and universities the students pray for success with their studies. During Saraswati Day it is not allowed to read, which can be compared with our 'one minute silence', in honour of the 'gift' of books and language which enables mankind to pass on the scientific knowledge that leads to secular success. In itself these ' m o d e r n ' interpretations do no harm as far as the importance of secular, scientific knowledge for the education and development of the worldy career of the individual is concerned. However the loss of the original interpretation of the religious symbols, their actual meaning, does serious harm to the spiritual development of the Balinese as an individual, and to the spiritual progress of the Balinese as a people. And since the spiritual symbolism is universal, loss of spiritual consciousness concerns not only the Balinese but all of mankind, as individuals as well as a race. Unfortunately, the true Knowledge of Saraswati, the knowledge of the mathematical science that defines the octaves of existence, and which rules and controls the cycles of life of all manifestations (also referred to as sacred geometry), and which enables mankind to be a true Master of his life, is not taught in our schools and universities, nor is it taught by our religious leaders.

Quoted in Beritabali.com, governor Pastika said, Give the passenger tickets anyway. This will allow us to measure the growth in passenger numbers on the Trans-Sarbagita system." Seputarbali.com reports that the governor recently

The driver and conductor reportedly only became aware they had the governor on board as Pastika disembarked at the BTDC in Nusa Dua. The trip allowed the governor to see firsthand the operation and the growing public acceptance of the bus system first launched on August 18, 2011. Based on his experience,

He was reprimanded last December for publicly stating he would never be able to get back into the Australian side while Clarke remained on the selection panel. Katich was replaced by, among others, fellow New South Wales team-mate Phil Hughes. But despite the young opener's mediocre form, Katich was never recalled to the Test line-up. Katich was recently axed as Blues skipper as New South Wales looked to blood younger leaders, but he maintained his exemplary record in Sheffield Shield cricket, hitting 483 runs and averaging 43.90 last season. Coma patient cries at fiancee's voice

A teacher who had been in a coma for almost a year after a motorcycle accident began crying after hearing his fiancee's voice on the phone,
Mathew Taylor, 31, who had been unconscious since suffering severe head injuries in a motorcycle accident last July, began crying after hearing his Indonesian girlfriend's voice on the phone while he lay in hospital in the UK - the first time he had shown any signs of recovery. Mr Taylor had been teaching English in Indonesia and was planning to marry Handayani Nurul, known as Anda, when a motorbike crash left him critically injured. He underwent surgery for a fractured skull and he slipped into a coma and was returned to Britain, where doctors told his parents that their son may never regain consciousness. His mother Heather said he showed no signs of movement until three weeks ago, when she called Miss Nurul in Indonesia. "He had tears in his eyes as he held the phone to his ear, Mr Taylor's stepfather, Simon Moore said. She asked him something and he said a silent 'yes'. Then tears were coming down his face. It was brilliant. Mr Taylor's recovery has been hailed as a victory for "coma arousal programs" methods of stimulating coma patients. A spokesman for brain injury charity Headway said periods of stimulation in the form of sound, touch, smell and taste, combined with periods of complete rest in order not to overload the person's senses, could be successful in waking coma patients. Mr Taylor's family had to raise 100,000 to pay for his medical treatment, which included having his eye socket reconstructed using a bone from his thigh, as he did not have insurance. Miss Nurul, 27, was granted a three-month visa to visit her fiance, but after it expired she was forced to return to Indonesia, where she studies Dutch literature at the University of Indonesia. M r Ta y l o r i s n o w reported to be in a low-arousal coma, which means he responds to certain stimuli, and has slowly started to regain some movement.

Indiana refinery workers find dead monkeys in crate

Indiana refinery workers got a surprise when they opened a crate of valves from India and found the remains of two small monkeys, which had been there for at least a year.
"Sadly in this age of global transport of goods and materials, sometimes wildlife finds its way into overseas shipments," BP Plc spokesman Scott Dean said "We believe this is just a sad case of the animals becoming trapped in a large shipping container." Workers at BP's 405,000-barrel-per-day (bpd) Whiting, Indiana, refinery found the remains in a large crate of valves, Dean said. The 5-foot (1.5-meter) by 10-foot (3-meter) wooden crate, containing valves for a $4.4-billion (2.82 billion pounds) upgrade of the refinery currently underway, was shipped from India and arrived at a Louisiana warehouse in June 2011, he said. The crate was at the Louisiana warehouse until being shipped to the Whiting refinery a few weeks ago, he said. "The animals were removed for safe disposal per U.S. Centre for Disease Control guidance," Dean said. "There was never any threat to workers or the wider community."

"We are hopeful that 'Keps' will be good to go, but we do have a contingency plan in place if we need it," Wallabies coach Robbie Deans said. "There are five props in the group we have with us in Melbourne so we saw no need in bringing anyone extra in." Ben Alexander, who can play on both sides of the front row and is named as a replacement, is most likely to step into the breach

Lang Park, Deans said the victory would not have dented Welsh confidence that they can win a test in Australia for the first time since 1969. "That belief won't have been altered by last Saturday night," Deans says. "If anything, that game - and more particularly the opportunities that they were able to create within in it - will only have hardened their resolve." Buderus signs new Knights deal

Danny Buderus has signed a new one-year deal with Newcastle that will keep the former NSW skipper with the NRL club until the end of 2013.
Buderus re-joined the Knights following a three-year stint with Leeds in the English Super League at the start of this season and has been one of the few positives in a poor campaign for Wayne Bennett's side. The 34-year-old has played 11 games this season and became the second-most capped player for the Knights after surpassing Tony Butterfield's tally of 229 games in Round 13. "It means so much to me every time I run out in the Knights jersey and I just want to do everything I can to help the club," Buderus said. "I didn't come back here expecting the fairytale nor to just contribute, I want to have a positive influence on the place. "Age isn't an issue for me and if I didn't feel like I could contribute I would give it away."

Essendon will miss forward Alwyn Davey for two matches after the Bombers' livewire accepted a ban for rough conduct.
The AFL tribunal did not sit on Tuesday night after six players accepted fines or bans rather than challenge their charges laid following the weekend's round of matches. Meanwhile Melbourne's Luke Tapscott has been charged with striking by the match review panel and faces a one-match ban with an early plea after Monday's match between the Demons and Collingwood. Davey chose to accept the ban for a bump he laid on Sydney's Daniel Hannebery in the third quarter of the Bomber's loss to the Swans on Saturday. Hannebery came from the ground looking dazed and was substituted shortly afterwards. If Davey had challenged the ban and lost, he would have been out for three matches, not including this week's bye.

With six laps remaining, he was less than one second behind the Spaniard's car and waiting for an error or a chance to sweep past him - again it came on the back straight and he took it with elan, Alonso moving over and back to acknowledge he had no defence. Vettel, struggling on worn tyres, pitted with five laps left and dropped down to fifth, thus turning the final laps into a battle of nerve and tyre-wear for those in pursuit of a podium position.

The 28-year-old Briton produced a superbly judged race to wipe away all fears hanging over the event after a weekend of protests and police action in the city to seize his first win of the year. Police reported the arrests of around 30 protesters in the hours before the race as Canadian students rallying for months over tuition hikes used the Formula One showpiece to highlight their cause. Late Saturday, shield-wielding riot police had pushed back and chased hundreds of protesters amassed in the downtown shopping district, making 28 arrests. The event itself passed off smoothly, with Hamilton's triumph coming five years to the day after he had claimed his maiden Formula One victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and his third win at what must be one of his favourite circuits. It was his 18th career victory and it hoisted him back into serious contention for the drivers' title in this year of unexpected results and unpredictable racing. He now leads the standings on 88 points ahead of Fernando Alonso on 86 and defending champion Sebastian Vettel on 85. Australia's Mark Webber finished the race in seventh place. Frenchman Romain Grosjean of Lotus came home second after an equally well-judged race to finish ahead of third-placed Mexican Sergio Perez of Sauber. 2012: seven different winners Australia: Jenson Button (GBR) Malaysia: Fernando Alonso (ESP) China: Nico Rosberg (GER) Bahrain: Sebastian Vettel (GER) Spain: Pastor Maldonado (VEN) Monaco: Mark Webber (AUS) Canada: Lewis Hamilton (GBR) Defending double world champion German Vettel of Red Bull finished fourth after a late second pit stop ahead of two-time champion Alonso of Ferrari and sixth-placed Nico Rosberg of Mercedes. Webber was seventh in the second Red Bull ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, the 2007 champion, in the second Lotus, and Japanese Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber and Felipe Massa for Ferrari. "Winner, winner! Well done you guys, thank you, thank you," said Hamilton on the team radio during his slowing down lap after finishing clear of Grosjean by more than 2.5 seconds. Hamilton's McLaren team-mate, 2009 champion Jenson Button endured another troubled race and finished 16th while seven-times champion veteran Michael Schumacher was forced into early retirement by mechanical problems with his Mercedes. At the start Vettel made a clean getaway from his 32nd pole position. Hamilton and Alonso followed him in file order through the opening laps and the order remained unchanged until lap 16 when the defending champion made his first pit stop. This gave Hamilton the lead and he produced a turn of speed in the clean air to make sure that when he came in two laps later he remained in control. Alonso took the lead this time and when he came in he rejoined ahead of Hamilton, second behind Grosjean, but only just - and Hamilton, in fine form, set him up for a thrilling passing move that he executed on the back straight on lap 21 to regain second place and, in effect the lead. This was turned into reality when Grosjean pitted on lap 22 and the 2008 champion Hamilton began to build a lead that stretched to more than four seconds ahead of Alonso before it was reduced before he made a second stop for fresh tyres on lap 51. Hamilton rejoined in third behind leader Alonso and Vettel, both on worn rubber, and using his fresh tyres he swiftly reduced their
