10. Objektif mata pelajaran (Unit Objectives) :


On completion of this unit, a student shall be able to:
• Understand the properties and behaviour of fluids in both static and motion
conditions and apply the principles of fluid mechanics in engineering
application

11. Senarai hasil pembelajaran (Unit Learning Outcomes):


At the end of the unit, a student shall be able to:
1. Determine the dimensions of physical quantities for fluid mechanics,
2. Apply Newton’s law of friction to determine shear in flows,
3. Apply the concept of hydrostatics to determine pressures and forces on
surfaces,
4. Apply the Bernoulli equation and continuity principle, and their application to
simple flows,
5. Perform dimensional analysis to interpret and correlate experimental data,
and to develop models of simple fluid flows,
6. Determine frictional and major loses for laminar and turbulent flows in pipes
7. Determine lift and friction drag, and determine the main features of
boundary layer on a flat plate.
8. Analyze and calculate the compressible flow in a pipe with and without
friction
9. Differentiate between the flow in closed conduits and flow in open channels
10. Conduct experiment, analyze and interpret data of fluid mechanics

12. Sinopsis mata pelajaran :


The subject includes the fundamentals of fluid mechanics especially fluid statics
and fluid hydrodynamics.

M1 Topic: Flow through a convergent-divergent duct

Task: To study the Bernoulli equation and employ the venturi-meter to measure
the discharge along a pipe.

Resources: Pump, bench valve, vertical manometer tube, control valve, hand
pump and volumetric tank.

M2 Topic: Impact of Water Jet

Task: To demonstrate the application of the momentum equation as applied to


the impact of a jet of water on to 3 defectors of different angles of deflection.

Resources: Water Jet apparatus.

M3 Topic: Fluid flow Friction and fitting loss

Task: To determine the pressure or head loss in different diameters pipes, joints,
valves, orifice meter and venturi tube

Resources: Fluid friction Trainer, water pump, digital manometer

M4 Topic: Working principle of centrifugal pump

Task: To understand the working principle of single, parallel and series pump
configuration
