'59 Winning Aston Martin DBR1 Honors Shelby, Salvadori at Le Mans

Gaydon, UK -- Aston Martin's 1959 Le Mans-winning DBR1 will be on display this weekend during the annual 24-hour race in France in tribute to its drivers Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori and its chief engineer Ted Cutting, all of whom died within the past few months. The pale green sports racer will be on display outside Aston Martin's hospitality area near the start of the pit straight. The car, one of five built, represents Aston Martin's sole outright victory at Le Mans. The DBR1's also propelled Aston that same year to the World Sportscar Championship. At Le Mans, three of the DBR1's were entered, with Moss in DBR1/3 setting a furious pace for the first 70 laps but DNF'd. DBR1/2 with Shelby and Salvadori endured to the win, followed (one lap down) by Paul Frere and Maurice Trintignant in DBR1/4 for 2nd place. The Astons were 25 laps ahead of the P36 Ferrari 250 GT's. In tribute to the trio, Aston Martin's entry into the Aston Martin Racing Festival of Le Mans, a V12 Zagato piloted by CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez, will change its normal #005 to #59. The festival is a singlemake support race with a total of 30 racers from GT1, GT2, GT3 and GT4 classes in a 45-minute tilt and is the largest display of Aston Martin-built race cars to date. The factory entries for the main round-the-clock event, a pair of Vantage GTEs, will carry a commemorative plaque, while the six drivers' helmets will display the number 59 and Shelby's and

Salvadori's initials. The automaker has produced a video tribute to the '59 efforts of Shelby, Salvadori and Cutting featuring original footage from the 1959 race. Click on the window (below) to view the 2-minute tribute.

Redman's Targa 66 Schedules Open 3-Day Monticello Event

Vero Beach, FL -- Championship race driver Brian Redman's Targa 66 is organizing a three-day track event at the exclusive, members-only Monticello Motor Club July 27-29. Entrants will enjoy up to three days of hefty track time at the 4.1-mile private motorsports country club in New York's Catskills region. As a unique inducement, Targa's normal annual membership fee requirement is being waived for the event -- in other words, anyone with an interest in high-performance driving in a safe, friendly environment can sign up for this exclusive driving event. The race-grade asphalt circuit, set on 175 undulating, wooded acres, features 450 feet of elevation changes, 22 turns including hairpins, increasing and decreasing radius curves and fast sweepers, along with more than 1.5 miles of straights. Designed by Redman in concert with Bruce Hawkins, it's built to test pro drivers but designed to be safe for the first-time visitor. Redman said the road course "is among the best in the world, with turns and challenges that will excite drivers of all levels." Facilities include two separate pit facilities and a skid-pad area. The track will be fully staffed with safety workers, including track marshals, EMS vehicle and staff. Instruction and track tips will be available to Targa 66 members at no extra charge, along with a track talk with Redman and NASCAR star Jeff Gordon. Entry includes driving privileges for two family members and any number of cars. Entrants can sign up for all three days, or for a single day. Morton, Unser, Carolla To Be Feted At Riverside Datsun/Nissan Tribute

Riverside, CA -- Road racing legend John Morton will be honored at a Gala Tribute to DatsunNissan Racing presented by The Riverside International Automotive Museum (RIAM) in Riverside California next Thursday, June 21 and Friday June 22. Morton, along with a number of notable Datsun-Nissan racing personnel, cars and IndyCar mega-star Bobby Unser, will be on hand. Anticipated to emcee the event is celebrity automotive enthusiast and television host, Adam Carolla. The two-day event, on the eve of the HSR-West Vintage Weekend at Fontana Speedway, pays homage to the fabled heritage of Datsun-Nissan's successful involvement in SCCA Trans-Am and IMSA GT. John Morton's celebrated racing career and top Datsun-Nissan teams including Bob Sharp Racing and (Peter) Brock Racing Enterprises will be the topic of rare films, discussion panels and two cocktail receptions and gala dinner Friday night. Proceeds from the DatsunNissan Racing Tribute will go to support the Boys Republic charity.
