TIME ACTIVITY

10 minutes 1. Welcome at Door

Sign in log, packet handouts, and name badges should be on table as participants walk into door. Snacks and drinks may also be provided. The outcome is to become acquainted with the presenter(s). Rationale and Background This activity is designed for the presenter to find out who is in the room.
3 minutes 2. Social Network Survey

Surveys should be placed on group tables before participants arrive. The outcome of the survey is for the participant to start thinking about how they use social media. Rational and Background This activity is intended for the participant to develop an insight into what is acceptable use of social media.
7 minutes 3. Icebreaker Activity/Partner Interview

The outcome of this activity is for the participants to become acquainted with their group. Rationale and Background This activity is intended for the participants to meet the other participants in the group.

4. Presenter Introduction Partner Interview to the Group The outcome of this activity is to build a community and to begin to understand the capacity to serve in a mentoring role in the midst of the widespread use of social media. Rationale and Background This activity is designed to build a community from the start. Subsequent activities will provide a deeper understanding and commitment to novice teacher support and the professionalism of teaching. This activity generally takes about 25 minutes. The participants introduce their partner in a round-robin fashion to the whole group. Participants benefit from having the opportunity to introduce themselves to the whole group, even when everyone is from the same district. All voices are heard from the start of the meeting. Welcome Welcome participants to the training and briefly set the context. Emphasize the importance of the work of supporting novice teachers. Acknowledge how induction and retention of new teachers is one of the most challenging facets of education today. Share your own commitment and excitement in being part of this effort. Briefly introduce yourself and your position. If you have a co presenter, introduce their role and passion for their job. Comment on your roles as learners also. Let the participants know that you welcome their experience and expertise.

Let them know they are sitting in mixed groups to expand their learning, to strengthen their sense of community, and to network. Explain that the participants are being given the opportunity to think about their roles as well as to get to know the other educators in the room. Housekeeping Ask participants to put their names on their name tag. Breaks are outlined in the agenda. Please take their personal business outside the meeting room. Agenda Overview Explain that the agenda was on a table as the participants walked into the room. Partner Interview Participants are grouped at tables according to color post - its they were given as they walked through the door. Partners introduce themselves to each other in response to the given 4 prompts on the Partner Interview slide. Name What they teach Where they teach Favorite outside of school activity

Allow 7 minutes for the interviews. (Monitor the activity time.) Halfway through, remind participants that the first person should be finishing so the second person can also share information about themselves. Let the group know when they have a minute left, so they can wrap up their interviews. Close by welcoming everyone in the room again, and share your enthusiasm for working with the group regarding this important issue. 5. Power Point Presentation (STOP power point at Could This Happen You?) The outcome of this presentation is to bring to mind the issues regarding the misuse of social media. Rationale and Background The overall goal for this staff development is to familiarize novice teachers with the misuses of social media and the consequences that ensue. The learning objectives for this staff development are for the novice teacher to understand the code of ethic responsibility and to appropriately utilize social media. The novice teacher will be able to successfully perform as a professional educator and avoid issues that lead to dismissal after leaving this professional development.

6. Group Activity Scenarios The outcome of this activity is for participants to collaborate and develop a skit from a given scenario. Rationale and Background This activity is intended for participants to get a deeper understanding of the misuses of social media and the consequences.

7. Group Skit Presentations Give each team 5 minutes. The outcome of this activity for the groups to collaborate. Rationale and Background This activity is intended to spotlight different misuses of social media and their possible consequences.

8. Conclusion (RESTART power point at Testimonials) Power point Testimonials and Parking Lot Discussions. The outcome of this activity is to bring home the thoughts of the professional educators who made the unintentional mistake of misusing social media. The participants will share reflections via the comments from the Parking Lot Discussion and new ideas. Rationale and Background This activity is designed to give the participants an understanding of the real consequences to the misuses of social media, and to give them pause before they put their personal information out for the world to see.

9. Assessment Exit Ticket The outcome of this activity is to peruse the final thoughts of the participants. Rationale and Background This activity is designed for the participants to reflect on changes, if any, they will make in their social networking experience inside and outside of school.
