Question 1 A data of mathematic monthly examination marks is taken from SK Minden Height, Penang.

A class of 40 students in standard 6 is chosen to determine the mean and the standard deviation of the marks. The monthly examination marks. 68 73 62 52 43 84 87 70 68 55 82 70 89 78 65 92 66 81 60 54 35 40 58 69 79 50 65 45 82 76 85 73 65 71 63 90 52 57 60 44

FIND OUT CHOOSE A STRATEGY

We are asked to determine the mean and standard deviation. How many students are in the class? Fourth students. Would it be much better if the marks are arrange into more specific? Yes, we can arrange it in term of a ungrouped and grouped table. Should we do anything else? We can use formulas as a guide to solve the problems.

SOLVE IT

First strategy: Ungrouped table

Get ready with a proper table and list out the marks. Every mark would be square two and listed out in the same table. Find the total value of the value and apply it through the formula, to find the mean. Use the mean and apply it through the formula, to find the standard deviation.

X 68 73 62 52 43 84 87 70 68 55 82 70 89 78 65 92 66 81 60 54 35 40 58 69 79 50 65 45 82 76 85 73 65 71 63 90 52 57 60 44 x=2647

X 4624 5329 3844 2707 1849 7056 7569 4900 4624 3025 6724 4900 7921 6084 4225 8464 4356 6561 3600 2916 1225 1600 3364 4761 6241 2500 4225 2025 6724 5776 7225 5329 4225 5041 3969 8100 2704 3249 3600 1936 x=176175

SOLUTION Mean, x = x = 2647 = 66.175. N 40 Variance, = x - (x) N (N) = x - (mean) N = 176175 (2647) 40 (40) = 4404.375 4379.131 = 210.134. Standard deviation, = variance = 210.134 = 14.496. The mean of the monthly examination marks is 66.175 while the standard deviation of the marks is 14.496.

Second strategy: Grouped table

Arrange the marks into more specific whereby the marks are list out more strategically. List out the marks according to the class length. Find the total value of the value and apply it through the formula, to find the mean. Use the mean and apply it through the formula, to find the standard deviation.

13520 33489 44100 37446 46464 fx = 176175

SOLUTION Mean, x = fx = 2647 = 66.175. f 40 Variance, = fx - (fx) f (f) = fx - (mean) f = 176175 (2647) 40 (40) = 4404.375 4379.131 = 210.134. Standard deviation, = variance = 210.134 = 14.496.

LOOK BACK
