DUANE

ESQUIRE
COURT

CLERK

October 13, 2011 Mr. John Cummings, Chief Felony Major Crimes Section United States Attorney's Office th 555 4 Street, NW, Room 3132 Washington, DC 20001 Dear Mr. Cummings, Please be advised that I have recently received a number of complaints from summoned grand jurors claiming that they were denied admission to your building because they possessed some form of personal technology. These citizens were reportedly told that they had to immediately store all personal technology items in their cars or return them to their homes. It is my understanding that during down time your office previously permitted grand jurors the use of laptops, DVD players, iPods, iPads ,PDAs and cell phones without a camera function. I am aware that in the past any type of camera or technology with a camera function was logged in at the security desk upon arrival and returned to the juror at the end of the day's session. I am unaware of any official policy changes related to the acceptance of personal technology in your office and therefore summer-ed c.tlzens are inconvenienced unnecessarily by this lack of current information. Since many citizens refer to the Court's website and initially report to the Juror Office in the Moultrie Courthouse, they need to be made aware of any new policies before they report. From a customer service perspective I trust you agree that as a grand juror, it is only fair that these citizens be appropriately informed beforehand about current policies and procedures related to the use of personal technology. The Court's web site and the grand jury handouts provided in the Jurors Office clearly need to be updated to reflect your current policies as expeditiously as possible. Please provide me with your current official policies related to acceptance and use of personal technology by grand jurors. I will see to it that the information is updated and passed on to the citizens summoned for grand jury service. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Sincerely, ,..--- ,

Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC) We, the undersigned jurors serving grand jury d~ty for the Distric~ of Columbia, respectfully request the policy be reinsta~ed allowing jurors to have access to "cell phones :without cameras), pagers, radios wi~h earplugs and laptop computers" when not in session. We are obligated to serve grand jury duty for multiple weeks and the burden of not having access to these devices creates a hardship.
