Charter
school
ruling still
uncertain
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Voorhees Sun
The Cherry Hill, Voorhees,
Lawnside and Somerdale
School Districts continue to
wait for a ruling from the state
Department of Education on
whether it will allow Regis
Academy Charter School to
open its doors this fall.
In March, the Cherry Hill
School District requested a re-
consideration to grant the
charter to Regis, which would
open on the former Holy
Rosary site at 99 Burnt Mill
Road, near the Cherry
Hill/Voorhees border.
The Solid Rock Worship
Center currently rents the land
from the diocese, with the in-
tent to open the charter school
on the site.
Last week, Pastor Amir
Khan, who leads Solid Rock
and the charter school, said he
was ready to make settlement
with the diocese on the proper-
ty. He said one company has
begun working on appraising
the buildings.
The appeal was pending in
the Superior Court of New Jer-
seyappellate division, until
Chris Cerf, acting commission-
er of Education, asked to have
control of the decision given to
him, which was granted by the
court, said Susan Bastnagel,

Lost dog treks to nearby town
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Voorhees Sun
Its not exactly The Incredible
Journey, but if Mitzy the beagle
pointer mix could talk, she would
have some amazing tales to tell.
The two-and-a-half year old
rescue dog disappeared in Eve-
sham Township on Saturday, May
19, after running away from her
owner and into the woods behind
Georgia OKeefe Way.
After more than two weeks on
the lam, the frightened dog was
found on Wednesday, June 6, on
William Feather Drive in
Voorhees Township.
Mitzy was hanging out at a
friends house, one that she had
only been to on a handful of occa-
sions.
No, seriously.
Her owner, Dina Greenblatt,
said she believes that Mitzy
caught the scent of her dog friend
Molly a golden labradoodle
while she was running through
the woods behind Sturbridge
Lakes in Voorhees Township.
Mitzy and Molly are both fans of
the dog park in John Connolly
Park in Voorhees Township and
play there frequently while their
owners chat.
The only other people outside
of the four members of our fami-
ly that she trusts are her dog
friend Molly and her mommy
Maryanne, Greenblatt said. It
was unbelievable. She had only
been to Mollys house twice be-
fore during our two-year friend-
ship.
The rescue dog is extremely
nervous and skittish, Greenblatt
explained, and was most likely
abused before the Voorhees
Township family adopted her.
The family had been visiting rela-
tives in Evesham Township when
Mitzy disappeared on May 19.
After spending hours in the
woods looking for Mitzy and
having to be rescued herself by
the Evesham Township Police
after she got lost Greenblatt re-
turned home and immediately
went online to see what could be
done.
Greenblatt started a Facebook
page and posted a listing on
Craigslist urging all residents in
the area to call if they saw the dog
running through their neighbor-
hood. They posted her informa-
tion on a pet tracking website
called FindToto.com as well,
which sent out a phone message
blast about Mitzy to registered

Public Information Officer. Earli-
er this month, Bastnagel said, a
letter was sent from the states
charter school office to Khan, let-
ting him know his application
was being reviewed by the state.
As you know, Acting Commis-
sioner Cerf has been granted ju-
risdiction over the Voorhees and
Cherry Hill appeal of Regis Acad-
emy Charter School. We are cur-
rently in the process of reviewing
the documents, and subsequently
your application and addenda.
Numerous issues and inaccura-
cies have been brought to our at-
tention regarding the schools ap-
plication and addenda, said Amy
Ruck, interim director, Office of
Charter Schools, in her letter to
Khan. Among those issues for the
school districts involved, Bast-
nagel said, is that Solid Rock does
not own the buildings and contin-
ues to rent the property from the
Diocese. A second question, she
said, is an issue of church and
state. The district feels public tax-
payer money should not go to-
ward acquiring religious proper-
ty.
If Solid Rock had independent
means to purchase the building, it
would have done so by now, she
said. The third issue for the dis-
tricts is based on the number of
students who will go to the school
and what each school district is
asked to contribute.
Regis Academys goal was to
have 250 students from the four
sending districts, or at least 90
percent, registered for the 2012-
2013 school year. As of the June 11
enrollment report, 22 students
from Cherry Hill, 14 from
Voorhees, 13 from Somerdale and
29 from Lawnside have registered
to start attending Regis this fall,
Bastnagel said.
Khan said, as of June 21, he has
267 students registered and on the
waiting list, with about half the
students coming from the four
original districts, and the other
half from out-of-district.
Later this week, Regis Acade-
my is expected to receive a DOE
readiness visit, one more step in
the process to opening school
doors this fall. At the meeting,
Khan may have to prove that en-
rollment requirements have been
met. In total, 78 students from the
four original sending districts
have signed up for the school. An-
other 187 students from other dis-
tricts, including some from Lin-
denwold, Sicklerville and Cam-
den, have also registered to attend
Regis. Altogether, students from
21 other local districts applied to
start at the charter school this fall.
Khan said he anticipates a posi-
tive review from the DOE later
this week.
When you study charter
schools, even in cities and urban
areas, people have concerns,
Khan said. The DOE expects that
and understands this.
The school districts involved
have taken action against the
charter school, but so have resi-
dents. Rita McClellan of Cherry
Hill sent testimony to the State
Board of Education on June 6,
pointing out that the charter
school should only be allowed to
draw students from the four origi-
nal sending districts.
During last nights Regis
Board of Trustees meeting, the
administrative principal stated
that, besides the four originally
approved sending districts, they
will be drawing students from 14
other school districts. Some of the
new, but unapproved, sending dis-
tricts will be from locations such
as Evesham, Camden, Mt. Holly,
Erial, Deptford and
Williamstown. According to cur-
rent charter rules, a charter must
draw students from contiguous
districts. The last time I checked a
map, most of these locations were
not adjacent to the original send-
ing districts, McClellan said.
This is not fair because many of
these districts have already estab-
lished their budgets for the next
school year.
The school districts have set
aside funding for the number of
students the DOE asked for each
district allocate for in the budget.
If Regis opens and fewer students
attend than what districts set
aside, those enrollments will be
reconciled in the fall, Bastnagel
said.

The Voorhees Swim Club (for-
merly known as Sturbridge
Woods Swim Club) opened the
pool season over the Memorial
Day weekend.
Mayor Michael Mignogna com-
memorated the grand opening on
Memorial Day with a ribbon-cut-
ting celebration. The holiday
weekend marked the unofficial
start of the summer season, and
what is more traditional than a
pool opening and a barbeque to
celebrate this holiday. The weath-
er was beautiful, and mayors
words honoring our servicemen
were a perfect complement to the
occasion.
The Voorhees Swim Club is the
perfect place to enjoy the summer
with your family. The club, which
opened in 1993, is the only com-
munity pool in Voorhees, and it is
open to anyone in South Jersey.
VSC has a six-lane, 25 meter
pool with a 400 square-foot wad-
ing area. There is also a large div-
ing area with an attached 1-meter
diving board. The club also has a
separate 15 foot diameter circular
baby pool that is enclosed for
added safety.
In addition to all of the swim-
ming activities, VSC has twin vol-
leyball courts, ping pong tables, a
four square pad, a childrens play-
ground area, wooded area, and a
propane grill available for par-
ties.

6 THE VOORHEES SUN JUNE 27-JULY 3, 2012
June 30 will mark the end of an era in
the Voorhees Township Police Department
as Chief Keith Hummel retires after serv-
ing our community tirelessly and passion-
ately for over three decades.
Chief Hummels service to Voorhees
started in 1980 when he was sworn in as a
Police Officer after serving as a part-time
officer in Gibbsboro. He quickly made his
mark on our department and was promot-
ed to sergeant in 1984, serving as a platoon
supervisor for six years. In 1990, Keith was
promoted to lieutenant where he served in
several different divisions. During this pe-
riod, he also graduated from the NJSCOP
West Point Command Leadership Pro-
gram. In 1996, he was promoted to captain.
Upon the retirement of chief Earl Odd in
1998, Keith became our chief of police.
During his tenure as chief, he served as
first assistant emergency management co-
ordinator and later as coordinator. He also
successfully completed the prestigious 11-
week FBI National Academy Program.
Most people know Chief Hummel the
cop. Few people know Keith Hummel the
man. Born in Camden in 1957, he grew up
in Cherry Hill and graduated from Cherry
Hill High School East in 1975. He went on
to play wide receiver on the Geneva Col-
lege Football Team in Beaver Falls, Penn-
sylvania. He then graduated magna cum
laude from Glassboro State College in 1979
with a Bachelor of
Arts Degree in Law
and Justice. Keith
received his Mas-
ters Degree in Ad-
ministrative Sci-
ence from Fair-
leigh Dickinson
University in 2005.
He later became an
adjunct professor
at both FDU and
Gloucester County
College.
Before begin-
ning his career in
law enforcement,
Keith worked for
his familys busi-
ness, Hummel En-
gineering Corporation, as a construction
estimator and project manager.
Keith and his wife, Linda, have been
married for 35 years and have two sons,
David and Kyle. David and his wife, Tracy,
live in North Carolina with their two sons,
Bradley and Nicholas. Kyle lives in
Philadelphia.
Keith loves all sports and has been a re-
spected high school football referee for
over 10 years. He also enjoys sailing, golf-
ing and skiing.
For 32 years, Keith Hummel protected
and served Voorhees Township. In his 14
years as chief of police, he led what I be-
lieve is the finest police department in the
State of New Jersey. They make us feel safe
and allow our families to sleep peacefully
at night. As Keith Hummels reign as chief
ends, a new era begins with the promotion
of Captain Lou Bordi to the position of
Chief of Police. Lou is a lifelong Voorhees
resident and a 24-year veteran of our police
department. Under his leadership, our Po-
lice department will continue to thrive.
On behalf of the Voorhees community
and the other members of the Township
Committee, we are thankful to Chief Keith
Hummel for his many years of service and
wish him a long and healthy retirement!
Farmers market, concerts
The Voorhees Town Center Farmers
Market will be held every Saturday
through Oct. 27 from 8 a.m. until noon at
the Special Events Plaza outside the en-
trance to Town Hall. The market features
Jersey fresh fruits, vegetables, pasta,
honey, wine and much more.
The next show in our 2012 Summer Twi-
light Series is Thursday, July 12, with the
return engagement of Hotel California: A
Salute to the Eagles. Enjoy the timeless
music of one of the most famous bands of
the 70s. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at Con-
nolly Park and is free.

in our opinion
T
he good news: New Jersey ac-
counted for 25 percent of all
new jobs created in the United
States in the month of May: 17,500 new
jobs were created.
The bad news: the states unemploy-
ment rate rose from 9.1 to 9.2 percent.
And lets be mindful: the 9.2 percent
figure really isnt an accurate unem-
ployment percentage at all.
There are countless people whose
unemployment benefits have run out,
and whose cases no longer count in de-
partment of labor statistics.
And there are others who may have
lost a job, who were ineligible for
unemployment benefits, and, again,
whose cases are not factored into the
state unemployment rate.
And so as encouraging as it is to
hear our state created the most new
jobs in the country, the overall known
unemployment numbers are still ex-
tremely alarming.
Gov. Christie says the new jobs re-
port means consumers are becoming
more confident.
The overall figures paint a complete-
ly different picture.
Were many years into this econom-
ic mess. And were still struggling as a
state, despite the so-called comeback.
While the governors 10 percent
across-the-board income-tax cut would
certainly help some, it certainly wont
help the middle class all that much.
A person making an annual salary
of $35,000 would see a whopping $1 a
week increase in take-home pay.
This is hardly enough to spark con-
sumer confidence.
Much more still needs to be done at
the federal and state levels to inspire
confidence. Realistically, the unem-
ployment percentage needs to drop to
close to 8 percent before theres any
reason for anyone to celebrate.
And even then, the numbers will
still be too high.
We look forward to the day we can
agree consumer confidence is back.
Were just not sure that time is here
yet.
States uptick in unemployment
Number rises despite creation of 17,500 new jobs; more must be done
How confident are you?
Gov. Christie says he believes con-
sumers in New Jersey are gaining
confidence. Yet the unemployment
rate jumped in May. How confident in
the economy are you? We want to
know.

users.
After only a few hours, calls
started to pour into their home.
Sightings of Mitzy were happen-
ing all over Evesham Township.
We were so distraught when it
happened. By the time I would get
anywhere after people spotted her
she would be gone. We were out
every single day looking for her;
we were getting sightings around
Kettle Run mostly, people I didnt
know were calling us and texting
us with sightings, it was crazy,
Greenblatt said.
An hour after she ran away, the
Greenblatts got their first call.
The escaped dog was spotted on
Kettle Run and Hopewell at 5:30
p.m. on May 19. The next day she
was spotted standing on the front
lawn of a residence in the same
neighborhood, but ran away be-
fore she could be caught.
Later on that night, a resident
called and said she saw Mitzy on
Kettle Run Road and Clearfield
Avenue, but the dog ran away dur-
ing the phone call.
For the rest of the week, Green-
blatt said the dog completely dis-
appeared. False sightings were
being called in, she said, and she
wasnt positively identified again
until Wednesday, June 6, some 17
days after her last appearance.
An employee from a dog chip-
ping service called Greenblatt
and excitedly told her that he had
spotted Mitzy in the Sturbridge
Lakes area in the township. He
tried to corral her, but the dog ran
away, and he and Greenblatt spent
the rest of the day riding around
in his truck looking for Mitzy.
While looking for her they got an-
other positive sighting of Mitzy at
Egret Road in the township later
on in the day, but she was gone
when they drove over.
With so many close calls and
no results, Greenblatt said she
was ready to give up hope.
But she received one last phone
call on the same day from her
friend Maryanne, informing her
that Mitzy was in her backyard
barking her head off with Molly.
Maryanne said she had heard
Molly barking like crazy a little
after 9 p.m. on June 6, and she
was surprised when she heard
another dog join in. She was even
more elated when she recognized
Mitzy, Mollys best dog friend
from John Connolly Park.
Her home is about three-and-a-
half miles away from the location
where Mitzy had been last spot-
ted. She had wandered through
the woods in the Sturbridge
Lakes area of Voorhees Township
to get to the home.
All told, Mitzy traveled almost
six miles from Marlton to
Voorhees during her 17-day ad-
venture.
And for her troubles?
Mitzy is now the proud owner
of doggie GPS which allows the
Greenblatt family to monitor her
location 24 hours a day.
Ultimately, the power of
puppy friendship was stronger
than all the human searching
that we could muster. Mitzy
showed up at her BFF's (Best
Furry Friend's) house in Stur-
bridge Lakes 17 days after run-
ning away, Greenblatt said. Peo-
ple went out of their way to help
us. Were so grateful.

Lamielle presents at national event
Voorhees resident Mary
Lamielle presented on accommo-
dating consumers and staff with
chemical sensitivities at centers
for independent living at the an-
nual conference of the National
Council on Independent Living
(NCIL) on June 14 in Washington,
D.C.
Lamielle, executive director of
the National Center for Environ-
mental Health Strategies
(NCEHS), discussed the impor-
tance of healthy indoor-environ-
mental quality (IEQ) and re-
viewed federal policies and pro-
grams that enhance accessibility
for people with chemical and elec-
trical sensitivi-
ties or intoler-
ances. She also
highlighted sev-
eral NCEHS ad-
vocacy initia-
tives focused on
improving IEQ
and effecting
policy change
to improve accessibility in hous-
ing, employment, and in the pub-
lic and private sector.
Nearly one-third of the U.S.
population experience reactions
to everyday exposure to pesti-
cides, perfume, fresh paint, new
carpeting and adhesives, cleaning
agents, and auto and diesel ex-
haust, while up to 6 percent are
disabled by these and similar ex-
posures.
Individuals with asthma,
autism, ADHD, migraines,
seizure disorders, auto-immune
diseases and sinus infections are
among those who are impacted by
indoor pollutants in the home, at
school, in the workplace and in
public and commercial buildings.
They benefit from policies that
promote healthy indoor environ-
ments free of smoking, pesti-
cides, and fragrances and scented
personal care and cleaning and
maintenance products.
