Mancy ace leads Ironmen to Final Four;

GAYLORD For the second
year in a row, the ace of the
Mancelona baseball team
staff has been named the Top
Choice All-Area Player of the
Year. Last year it was then-
senior lefty Taylor Borst, who
is now a football player for
Taylor University. This year
the honor goes to rangy sen-
ior right-hander Craig
Conway.
Conway posted a 14-2
record on the hill this season
with a 1.79 ERA and 118
strikeouts to his credit. He
was 7-1 in the Ski Valley as
Mancelona repeated as
league champs. He wasnt too
shabby with the bat either,
punishing enemy pitching
for a .443 average with 34
RBIs and 27 runs scored.

VanWagoner, who has
earned the honor for the
fourth time in five years,
guided the Ironmen to their
first-ever berth in the Final
Four. Guild led the Cardinals
to a runner-up finish in the
Ski Valley, a district champi-
onship and a school record
32 wins this season. He also
surpassed the 700-win
plateau in his coaching
career.

Conways contributions
from the bump and at the
plate helped the Ironmen
win 29 games in 2012. In
addition to the Ski Valley title,
the Ironmen won their fourth
straight Div. 3 district cham-
pionship and their second
straight regional champi-
onship before winning in the
quarterfinals and advancing
to the Final Four in Battle
Creek for the first time in
school history.
The 6-foot-3 Conway
turned in his finest perform-
ances when they counted the
most in the playoffs, earning
complete-game victories
over Charlevoix in the dis-
trict, Benzie Central in the
region and in the 2-1 eight-
inning triumph over
Newagyo in the quarterfinals.
Conway also helped with his
bat, particularly in the
regional championship game
against Whittemore-Prescott
where he played third base
and knocked in four runs
with a single and double in
support of freshman pitcher
Brandon Dingman. He also
delivered a clutch two-out,
two run single late in the 6-3
victory over Charlevoix and a
two-run double in the 5-2
victory over Benzie Central.
Conway, the only returning
senior on a Mancelona team
that won 28 games the year
before and advanced to the
quarterfinals, knew there
would be a lot placed on his
shoulders this season and he
was prepared for it.
I knew I had to step up
being the only senior, he
said. It motivated me to
work hard in the off-season
and put a lot of time in the
weight room over the winter.
Coach V motivated me a
lot, too. He talked to me after
last season and told me what
the expectations were. He
put his trust me and that
made me work even harder.
Conway more than lived
up to expectations.
We put the ball in Craigs
hands this year and told him
he was our horse,
VanWagoner said. He took it
seriously and put in the time
during the off-season to
make himself ready. Coming
in as the No. 1 pitcher on a
very young team he did
about as well as anybody
could have expected. He not
only won 14 games for us but
he hit the ball hard all year
and he gave us the senior
leadership we needed from
him.
Conway threw an assort-
ment of five pitches, includ-
ing a four-seam and a two-
seam fastball to go with a
slider, curve and change-up.

and features Ferris State players as

Individual Skills Volleyball

through Wednesday, July 9-11,
at Gaylord High School.
Current Ferris State University
players will be providing
instruction at the camp.
High school players are slat-
ed for 9 a.m. to noon and mid-
dle school from 1-4 p.m. each

outs per game while allowing
less than two earned runs.
What made Conway really
tough, though, was his ability
to bear down in crucial situa-
tions and get the outs. In the
crucial games against
Charlevoix, Benzie Central
and Newaygo, Conway
pitched out of jams several
times. In the 5-2 win over
favored Benzie in the region-
al semifinals, Conway twice
pitched out of bases-loaded
situations without allowing a
run. Two other innings, the
Huskies had two runners on
with less than two outs and
scored just one run.
Craig could take it to
another level when he had
to, VanWagoner said. He
was definitely at his toughest
when he had runners on
base. He could reach back
and deliver his best pitch
when he had to have it.
Conway credited the confi-
dence he felt in catchers Cole
VanWagoner and Kevin
Schepperley and his confi-
dence in the defenders
behind him in the infield and
outfield as a huge key to his
ability to pitch out of jams as
well as to his overall success.
When the situation called
for it I tried to bear down and
focus that much harder, he
said. My goal all year was to
have the hitters pound the
ball into the ground and let
the guys behind me take care
of it. When I needed an out I
was always confident I could
get it. I knew if they hit the
ball, our fielders would get
it.
Conway said the chemistry
that developed between him
on the mound and
Schepperley and
VanWagoner behind the
plate helped immensely. The
infield featuring Dalton Sulz
at third, Kyle Schepperley at
shortstop, Logan Borst at
second and Damion Decker
at first gobbled grounders
like a high-powered Hoover.
The outfield of Kevin
Schepperley in left, Wyatt
Derrer in center and Trevor
Ackler in right was not only
faster than blazes but adept
at tracking down flies and
turning potential doubles in
the alley into loud outs.
I cant say enough about
Kevin and Cole behind the
plate and the defense in the
field behind me, Conway
said. Without that, I would-
nt have done nearly as well.
Kyle was tremendous at
shortstop and Damion was
incredible at first the way he
stretched and made plays.
Dalton was like a truck at
third and Logan knew what
he was doing at second. He
was just a sophomore but he
came up the varsity the year
before as a freshman. We
went into every game know-
ing had a better outfield than
everybody we played. We all
had confidence in each
other.
The highlight of the year
for Conway was the tense 2-1
victory in the quarterfinals.
He scattered six hits and did
not allow an earned run to
Newaygo in eight innings of
work. He struck out seven
along the way.
In the first couple of
innings I was a little wild but
I got in the zone after that
and started slotting my
pitches, he said. My break-
ing pitches were working
really good. After we scored
in the sixth (on Wyatt Derrers
two-out RBI double) you
could feel the momentum
coming to our side. We knew
we were gonna win after
that.
In the eighth inning,
Decker came all the way
around from first with the
winning run when Borst laid
down a bunt and the ball was
overthrown at first base.
When Damion scored, it
was probably the best feeling
Ive ever had in my life, he
said. We knew we were
going to Battle Creek for the
first time in school history. It
was an awesome feeling for
me in my last year knowing I
would get to play downstate.
Conway will be continuing
his baseball career at Albion.
I went down there this
winter for baseball camp and
really liked it, he said. The
coaches were interested in
me so I went back on a
recruiting visit. I liked the
campus and the coaches and
the way they ran the pro-
gram. The coaches are a lot
like Coach V and Coach
(Chris) Saunders, very
knowledgeable about the
game. Theyre also very into
the game and have a passion
for it and that really fits the
type of player I am.
Conway will do some
pitching and also be a posi-
tion player, at least at the
outset.
You go down there for fall
ball and that gives you an
idea of what you want to do
at the college level, he said.
Im leaning toward pitching
but Ill do whatever the coach
wants me to do.
He and Gunnar Owens
from Johannesburg-
Lewiston are both going in as
freshmen at the school in the
fall and will also room
together.
We know each other from
going to the showcase at
Adrian and from playing
against each other so when I
found out he was going there,
too, I was pretty excited,
Conway said. Since were
friends we figured we might
as well room together.
VanWagoner believes
Conway and Owens both
have a lot to offer at the next
level.
Craig has a tremendous
upside with his size,
VanWagoner said. Gunnars
the same way. Theyre both
big, lanky guys who havent
reached their potential
weight yet. When you project
two or three years down the
road after they build their
bodies up and work on their
mechanics, you have a cou-
ple of guys who could really
tear it up. I think they both
can pitch and be successful if
they devote the time to it.
Under VanWagoners tute-
lage, Mancelona has won 29,
24, 28 and 29 games the past
four seasons. This year was
particularly gratifying for the
veteran coach because of the
way the young players on his
team developed during the
season and learned how to
win games.
Im really proud of this
group of young men, he
said. They went above and
beyond. Our pitching with
Craig, Brandon and Kyle
(Schepperley) was very con-
sistent and the kids did the
job in the field game after
game. We werent always con-
sistent hitting the ball but we
were able to use bunts and
steals to manufacture runs
when we had to. Its been a
great year.
Guild joins retired Rogers
City coach Howard Madsen
as the only other baseball
coach in northern Michigan
to reach the remarkable 700-
win plateau.
For Guild, who started
coaching at Johannesburg in
1975, to attain that many
wins in the North Country
where weather is a challenge
year after year and so many
games are cancelled each
spring is nothing short of
amazing. It is a testament to
Guilds ability to mold his
players in to a winning unit
each year, though Guild
deflects praise from himself,
focusing instead on the kids.
It just means Ive had a lot
of good kids, Guild said
modestly in an April inter-
view after reaching the mile-
stone. Weve been fortunate
to have some really good
baseball players here
through the years, kids who
love the sport and put in the
time to get pretty good at it.

GAYLORD Two area play-
ers, slugging senior second
baseman Tori Thompson of
Petoskey and sweet-swinging
junior second baseman
Megan Estep of Onaway,
were named first-team All-
State in their respective divi-
sion by the Michigan High
School Softball Coaches
Association (MHSSCA) this
week.
Thompson earned her
honor in Div. 2 after helping
Petoskey post a solid 22-13
record, including 9-3 in the
Big North. Estep was chosen
to the first team in Div. 4.
Megan mauled enemy pitch-
ing and played peerlessly in
the field as Onaway repeated
as undefeated Ski Valley
champs and posted an out-
standing 25-4 record this sea-
son.
Slamming senior shortstop
Kristen Espinoza of Petoskey
was picked for honorable
mention All-State, giving the
Northmen one of the most
potent keystone combina-
tions in the state.
Onaway had two honor-
able mention picks this year.
The Cardinals dangerous 1-2
combo of pitcher Emily Estep
and catcher Samantha
Brassuer was recognized
once again for their contribu-
tions in the field and at the
plate. Emily aka Emmy
Sizzle and Brassuer are
three-year starters with one
more year to pound and con-
found opponents for coach
Jodi Brewbaker.
Scrappy senior first base-
man Karli Jacob of Gaylord
St. Mary was also an honor-
able mention All-State pick.
Karli, a four-year starter for
the Snowbirds, is a prolific
slugger with an educated
glove who has helped St.
Mary put up positive num-
bers year after year.
Thompson, Estep named
All-State
GAYLORD The 32nd
annual Mark Mellon
Memorial Triathlon is slated
for Saturday, July 7, at Otsego
Lake County Park in Gaylord.
This year marks the 30th
anniversary of the popular
triathlon, which was started
in 1981 by Dr. Dennis and
Judy Mellon of Gaylord as a
loving tribute to their son
Mark, who was 16 and a
standout scholar-athlete at
St. Mary when he was tragi-
cally killed in a motorcycle
accident.
The traditional Olympic
Triathlon event features a 1K
swim, 40K bike and 10K run
and the Sprint Triathlon fea-
tures a 500-meter swim, a
20K bike and a 5K run. Relay
teams are welcome to enter
each of the events. There is
also a separate 5K run.
First through third place in
each race will receive prizes,
in addition to prizes in these
age categories: 12-15, 16-19,
20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39,
40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59,
60-64, 65-69, 70-plus.
Prize money for the
Olympic distance races is
$200 each for the male and
female champion; $100 for
second place and $50 for
third place. There is over
$1,000 in raffle giveaways as
well.
The entry fee is $65 for the
Olympic race, $55 for the
Sprint event, and $25 for the
5K race. The fee goes up $10
on the day of the race. All
previous overall Olympic
triathlon champions are free.
The Olympic relay registra-
tion is $125 and the Sprint
relay entry fee is $105. Two-
or three-person teams may
participate.
The pre-race briefing at the
beach begins at 7:45 a.m. The
Olympic race is slated for an
8 a.m. start for the males with
females and relay teams
starting at 8:05. The sprint
race begins at 8:30 a.m. for
the males and 8:35 a.m. for
the females and relays. The
5K run is at 8:45. A post-race
lunch will be served at the
pavilion starting at 10:30 a.m.
and the awards ceremony is
scheduled for 11 a.m.

off West Otsego Lake Drive,

Mellon Triathlon upcoming in Gaylord

GAYLORD -- In their sea-
son-opening doubleheader
on Tuesday, June 19, in
Gaylord against the Sandlot
the Mancelona Crush swept
both games 7-4 and 16-9.
The Crush jumped out to a
4-0 lead after four innings
before the Sandlot got to
Crush starter Caleb Roberts
for four runs in the fifth
inning. The Crush responded
with three runs in the sixth
inning and cool Crush reliev-
er Kolbi Schumaker shut out
the Sandlot for the final two
innings to earn the 7-4 win.
Dustin Derrer and Zach
Bontrager whacked the ball
with authority, each generat-
ing two hits and two RBIs to
pace the Crush offense.
The Sandlot jumped out to
a 3-0 lead after the first
inning in the nightcap, but
the Crush responded with an
eight run second nning to
take an 8-3 lead into the bot-
tom of the second.
The Sandlot returned fire
with five runs of their own in
the second before Derrer was
summoned to the mound to
take over for Bontrager.
Derrer held the Sandlot to
just one run over the last five
innings while the Crush con-
tinued scoring runs on their
way to a 16-9 win.
The D.A. was delivering
big-time for the Crush in
game two, especially with
runners on base. Dustin
Allen drilled two hits and
knocked in four runs while
Derrer and Logan Borst had
two hits and two RBIs and

In the nightcap the Crush
scored five runs in the sec-
ond inning to take a 5-3 lead,
but that would be the only
offense the Crush could put
together in the game, while
Benzie used a five-run fourth
inning to retake the lead on
their way to a 12-5 win.
The dangerous Derrer had
two hits and an RBI while

Association released its
annual All-State selections
this week and Petoskey sen-
ior midfielder Gabbi
Vandenbrink was a first-team
choice in Division 2.
Vandenbrink, a four-year
starter and an impact player
every year for the Northmen,
capped her brilliant prep
career with an outstanding
campaign, drilling home 18
goals to go with 9 assists as
the Northmen repeated as
Big North champions and
captured a district title.
Vandenbrink, who will
continue her career at Elmira
College in New York, was also
the leading scorer in the Big
North.
Gaylords stingy goalkeep-
er Alex Simmons also earned
recognition in Division 2,
being named honorable
mention. The junior was sen-
sational for the Blue Devils
this season, especially at
home where she permitted
just one goal.
Cheboygan junior mid-
fielder Megan Murphy was a
third-team pick in Division 3
after helping the Chiefs cap-
ture the Northern Michigan
Soccer League title. Junior
forward McKenzie Carroll,

BERRIEN COUNTY -- On
Tuesday, May 22, at 8 p.m. on
the St. Joseph River in
Berrien County a new state
record flathead catfish was
caught by Rodney Akey of
Niles, Michigan.
The fish weighed 49.8
pounds and measured 45.7
inches. Akey was still-fishing
from shore with an alewife
when he landed the record
fish. The record was verified
by Scott Hanshue, a DNR
fisheries biologist, at the
Plainwell office.
The previous state record
flathead catfish was caught
by Elmer Rayner of Hastings
on the Maple River in Ionia
County on August 6, 1943.
That fish weighed 47.5
pounds and measured 44
inches.
"I've been fishing catfish
on the St. Joseph River for the
last 20 years, but it never
crossed my mind that I
would catch a state record,"
said Akey. "And beating a
nearly 70-year record ? that's
a feat in itself!"
State records are recog-
nized by weight only. To qual-
ify for a state record, fish
must exceed the current list-
ed state record weight and
identification must be veri-
fied by a DNR fisheries biolo-
gist.

record flathead
Angler in Berrien County brought 49.8-pound
flathead catfish out of St. Joseph River
LANSING -- The
Department of Natural
Resources announced recent-
ly that snowmobile and off-
road vehicle (ORV) trail riders
will soon notice a reduction in
the types of trail markings
along the more than 10,000
miles of Michigan's designat-
ed motorized trail system.
The DNR implemented these
changes to improve safety
and provide consistent guid-
ance to the more than 90 non-
profit organizations that
maintain the trails.
A citizens' advisory work-
group (comprised of trail-rid-
ing enthusiasts, trail mainte-
nance organizations, mem-
bers of the DNR's
Snowmobile Advisory
Workgroup and the Michigan
Snowmobile Association)
made recommendations to
the DNR, resulting in these
upcoming changes. Technical
support for the workgroup
was provided by recreation
and law enforcement staff of
the DNR and the U.S. Forest
Service.
Changes include the elimi-
nation of 10 workgroup-
selected snowmobile signs,
the addition of five new snow-
mobile signs (plus guidelines
for placement), and a reduc-
tion in the size of regulatory
signs in the ORV program to
make them consistent with
snowmobile signage (already
implemented in 2011). The
changes also include replac-
ing ORV trail markers with
new, highly visible, yellow
markers. Installation will be
phased in over the next sever-
al years.

The DNR will continue to
mark 90-degree turns with
"sharp turn" warning signs
supplemented with a new
directional arrow. The new
snowmobile trail signage pro-
gram will go into effect at the
start of the 2012-13 snowmo-
bile season.
According to Bill Manson,
executive director of the
Michigan Snowmobile
Association, "Several of the
other snowmobile states and
Ontario have reduced their
signs and have seen a reduc-
tion in accidents. Our objec-
tive is to provide a safe, fami-
ly-oriented trail system for
snowmobiling in Michigan."
"The changes to the motor-
ized trail signage program is
the result of a collaborative
process with stakeholder
groups and should be a real
improvement for trail users,"
said Ron Olson, chief of the
DNR's Parks and Recreation
Division. "The sign reduc-
tions will result in less clutter
along the trails and provide
for more consistency
statewide."
In addition, new ORV trail
confidence markers will be
phased in over the next sever-
al years as funding allows. The
new ORV trail markers will be
yellow to distinguish them
from snowmobile trails. For

GAYLORD Retired Alma
College football coach Jim
Cole and his staff are coming
to Gaylord to conduct a foot-
ball camp in July 14. The camp
is being hosted by Gaylord
High School and Gaylord St.
Mary.
The camp will be held at the
Gaylord High School practice
facility and offered to students
entering the eighth through
twelfth grades. Camp begins
at 11 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m.
The camp offers college
level individual instruction for
all positions and provides four
hours of offense and four
hours of defense. This camp
will include 7-on-7, a line-
mans challenge, and a college
evaluation for those who want
to further their career after
high school.
Cost for the camp is $40 and
includes a T-shirt.
Registration is at 10 a.m.
Campers will need to supply
their own food, beverage, hel-
met, and cleats.

When Buying a
Home

Looking for a new home can be exciting and frustrat-
ing. You can help alleviate the frustration by paying close
attention to five key areas of the homes you're consider-
ing buying; it may save you money in the long run.
Don Walker is an inspector and owner of Ace Home
Inspections. He says there are five areas in homes that he
frequently reports problems with. They are electrical,
foundation, plumbing, the attic, and landscaping.
Tip # 3 - Plumbing
Walker says another big area of concern is the plumb-
ing. It's an area that you can't always spot as easily but it
can create expensive repairs if plumbing issues go either
undetected or are not properly fixed. "Mold forms under-
neath sinks when people have a leak and they fix the pipe
but they don't take care of the mold," says Walker.
He says things like caulking the sink can help prevent
mold. "That's my number one thing I always find -- bad
sinks," says Walker.
He says that when you look at the sink, look behind it
and most of the time you will discover a little crack.
"What happens is, when you wash dishes or you wash
your hands in the bathroom or the kitchen, the water
gets in that crack and seeps down. Once the water gets
behind the cabinet it's in a perfect position to create
mold," says Walker. The dampness, humidity, and lack of
light can turn that area beneath the sink into a mold-
breeding ground.
