Purpose
The organization of this Special Track on Case studies and methodologies, has been inspired by professor T. Grandon Gills book Informing with the Case Method (2011, Informing Science Press). From this book it becomes evident that Case studies and methodologies are probably one of the best means to effectively relate different disciplines and integrate research, education, and consulting activities.

This fact motivated the co-organizers of this special track on case studies and methodologies (stCSM 2012) via invited session(s), conversational session(s), and a workshop, jointly with: 1) The International Symposium on Interdisciplinary Research, Education, and Communication: Summer IDREC 2012, and 2) The 2nd International Symposium on Integrating Research, Education, and Problem Solving: Summer IREPS 2012 Since Case studies and methodologies nurture, and are nurtured by, processes of 1) integrating academic activities and 2) Interdisciplinary Research, Education, and Communication, the purpose of co-organizers of this special track is to generate synergic relationships among the three events: IDREC 2012, IREPS` 2012, and stCSM 2012. Figure 1 schematically shows the relationships among the three kinds of activities to be presented at the three mentioned events. Cybernetic loops of regulative and positive feedback might generate synergic effects among the three of them.

Figure 1
Figure 2 shows the positioning of research in case studies and methodologies with respect to other form of research. The Co-Organizers are planning to include in the program of the collocated events, at least, a workshop, delivered by T. Grandon Gill, and a conversational session. The number of invited sessions with presentations of articles will depend on the number of submissions made as a result of this call for participation and on those which are accepted for their presentation at the respective breakout session.

The following are the Suggested non-exclusionary topics: Case Methods and Methodologies Case Studies Research Case Studies in Education Case Studies in STEM Education Consulting Case Studies Business Case Studies Case Studies in Management Information Systems Case Studies Software Engineering Case Studies Engineering Case Studies Medical and Health Care Case Studies Case Studies in Science Ethical Case Studies

Submission Procedure
Submissions, and presentations of those accepted, should be oriented to Inter-disciplinary communication. Authors interested in submitting articles should send extended abstracts (600-1200 words) to jireps@mail.iiis2012.org Submissions to the invited session(s) of stCSM 2012cannot be sent thru the web site. If you send it thru an event web page it would not be received for its presentation at an invited session of stCSM 2012. The sooner you submit your extended abstract the more probable that its final camera-ready version will be included in the pre-conference edition of the proceedings, especially if the acceptance of your submission is conditioned to re-send it with some modifications. Everything else that it is written on IREPS 2012 Web page (www.iiis2012.org/sireps) applies to this special track, except the deadlines and the two tier reviewing methodology. If you submit your extended abstract with a short CV of yours, you might be selected as a keynote speaker of your breakout session, in which case you would have more time to present your article, and/or selected as an invited speaker, in which case 1) your presentation and paper will differentiated as a invited one, and 2) you might be invited to present an additional paper with no additional charge.

Workshop Case Studies and Methodologies and Integration of Academic Activities

This workshop will introduce participants to Case Studies and Method by showing the possibilities they generate for the Integration of Academic Activities A mix of presentation, exercises and discussion, the topics to be covered will include: What is the case method? Different types of case study and how they are used Steps in developing authentic case studies: from recruiting sites to publication Facilitating case discussions in the classroom Measuring case method learning outcomes Publishing case studies Opportunities for funding case method projects Broader impacts of case method on the individual and institution

The facilitator, Dr. T. Grandon Gill, has extensive experience in case method research, as well as in writing cases for classroom use and facilitating case discussions. His MBA and DBA are both from Harvard Business School, where the case method originated. He is author of the book Informing with the Case Method (2011, Informing Science Press) and recently became the founding editor of Journal of Information Technology Education: Discussion Cases, a publication outlet for case studies in the MIS, IT and informing science fields. Interested participants will be encouraged to remain in touch with the facilitator for possible participation in future grant initiatives and workshops.
