Dear Friend:
Dozens of letters ccntlnually arrive asking if it ia all r l g h t for women to have t h e i r hair c u t . Othere wonder lf it I s correct to m e permanents since they have 8 problem keeplng t h e l r hair neat,
Many women have been taught ever since they were Tittle girls that it l a entirely wrong to c u t womenla hair. This teachlng is suppoae.dly derived from the statement t h a t Paulmade to the Corlnthlan women.
'

YOU will n o t i c e in I Corinthians 11:13-15 t h t Paul says a woman ought t o have long hair that it I s an honor to her. "But if B woman have long hair, I t is LL glory to her." Because long haZr is mentioned, Dame are afrald to cut t h e i r hair at all. But the t e x t doesn't read uncut hair, it reads Hair can be c u t e . longhair. --- - and still b

Word Qf Clod how long her hair ought to be in herappear re"1ne. Perhaps near shoulder length ia a good average, aince m m e wmen naturally have shorter hair than others.

A y head of hair, even though c u t , if I t be long n enough to look femlnlne and honorable, is appropriate. There I s no d e f i n i t e "Bible length," save that it m u s t appear as EL glory to the wearer. But if a woman want5 to w e m her hair cut so s h o r t aa to look l l k e a man, Paul saya she ought to be shorn or shaven the symbol o r a fallen woman. how to c a r e f o r t h e i r hair properly.

CertaZn women have naturally curly hair and do not need permanents; othera have naturally straight hair EX

appear very becoming w l t h I t just ~8 it is. IT you appear n e a t in long straight hair, you would only be spoiling your appearance to add unnecessary curla.

But there are many women who have nearly straight hair who would appear much neater with a few curler. Should such women w e permanants?

First, let UB remember t h a t there are different kinds of permanents. Even the m m e permanent will react differently w l t h d i f f e r e n t wmen, because no two beada of hair are exactly alike. But nearly all pemmnents Wrll In-time do a certaln amount of damage to the hair. Often the ends are severely burned. Smetlmea they w i l l break off shorter and shorter. A f e w cheap permanents have even groved damagfng t o the h e a l t h .
Although 8ome women may find no ham i them, pern manents ought to be avolded In most cam3 aince there l a a much slmpler and-better method by which the ha1.r m y be given beauty. a It l a not hard to l e a n the a r t of using cuslfng plna with a amall m o u n t of water and it doe8nft take l o n g , e l t h e r . Dear Friend:

Many people want to know how far a Christian should go i telling n others about the truth o God. f

Moat people, when they are converted, make the miatake of t r y i n g to argue their friends, neighbors and relatives into converaion. But we must continually keep in mind that no one can force his religion an eomeone else. And no good thing' is accomplished by trying t o do 8 0 .

A Christian is known by his good works (Matt. 5: 14- 16) --not by "good arguments I ' or ''conatant preaching. " Our righteous, confident, happy lives-the way we live and the customs we keep--wi11 influence others far more than our words. God has comrrlanded o d y H i s ministers to sound the trumpet i n teaching people H i s ways (ha. 58;1). Laymen--and priniaters, as w e l l - should concentrate an producing good deeds that will rightly influence others. Remember, a 1iP;ht i~ easily Been, but makes no sound (Matt. 5:14).
However, if someone wants to know the truth, and asks U B in sincerity, then we should answer to the very best o our ability. It, f , be ready always to give an answer t o every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that i B i you, with meekness and fear" (1 Pet. 3:15). n Trying EQ explain God's truth t o people who are not ready t o receive it is worse than meless ! If w e -offend them we can have no good influence on them at all. The b e s t way to bring another tu convereion i s to refrain from talking religion with that person and pray to God inatead! You cannot argue or talk anyone intu conversion !

Dear Friend:

We continually receive l e t t e r s asklng: ''Should a

Some chwches require women t o wear v e l l a OF hats in church. They c l a h I Corknthlans m i - 1 6 a a auppoaed scriptural proof. They quote verse 6 apeclfically: "For if the woman be not covered, l e t her a l s o be shorn: but if it be B shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, l e t her be covered. ''

Other chuxlches use this Bame aeripture aa support for th&r doctrlne that women should never c u t thelr hair.
Modernists contend that whatever P a u l taught the Corinthian Church I s not for us today anyway -- and they proceed to do 8s they please,
What is the ---- t r u t h ? Same contend Paul required women t o wear vvella because it was the custom of the day f o r women to w e a r v e i l s in public places of worship. Thia is NOT true! Let's get our facta a t m i g h t .

Smith's MctlonaPy --of the Bible a r t i c l e "Veil" gives UB the answer. "In ancient times, the veil was adopted only in exceptlonal caae8, e l t h e r as an article of ornamental dress or by b e t r o t h e d maidens In the preaence of t h e i r huabanda, especially at the t i m e of t h e wedding or &women of 1 m s e character f o r purpo~~ea of concealment ( h n . 3 i T. It was not cuatomayy f o r women to wear veils in Paul's day. It is interestlng to note that the f a l l e n church pictured in Revelation 17, the fountain-head of harlotry, cummands its women to'wear coverings o v e ~ shaven heada I their r e l l g l o u s orders. n

What Saul taught is this: as man 2.8 the head of woman, it is Improper f o r m e n to have a coverin a religious aervice a s a symbol of subjection (I Cor. 11:4). The only exception m B long halr In the Nazarlts vow, a token of aubjectlon to God f o r a apeclal tlme ( N u n . 6 : 5 ) . Mn sre otherwise commanded: "Doth not even nature i t s e l f e teach you, that, If a man have long halr, I C l a a shame unto M m ? " (verae 14). "But If a woman have Ion h a T r , it is a glory to her: far her HAIX - Blven h e r d a c o v e r i n ~ "(verse 15). ia ---

Notice! Paul, under i n a p l r a t i o n , speaks of LON0 MAfR as the "covering, I' or v e i l . The Oreek word f o r ' ' ~ o v e r l n g ' ~ verse 15 means " v e l 1 I ' Sea the margin of the %n

PaUL does not say t h a t women must wear something over their hair. I n x a d , he says: "Doth not even nature i t a e l f teach you, that if a woman have lon h a m t is a g l o r y t o her: for her haiw. I s given her &a=ering.

Because "long haPr'' is mentioned, some &re arxlafd to cut their hair at all. Dear e l e n d :
The question: "Is it wrong to wear clothing of mixed fabrlm?" haa been of conalderable concern t o many. The phyalcal law found In Deuteronomy 22:11 and 19:19 againat W e a r i n g a garment of Wool and linen mixed is atill binding. This command is a PEYSICAL, not a 3PJXITUAL, " I T E R .

I is not wrong t o wear one garment of l l " and t another of wool at the Bame t i m e . Neither l e it wrong t o wear a wool aoat w i t h a rayon l i n i n g ; the rayon l h i n g f a

One should n o t buy socks with nylon reinforced heel and t o e becauae In such socks the two materials are interwoven.

You are likely t o more frequently encounter the problem of mixed fabrics in socks, s u i t s , meatera, aport s h i r t a , and blanketa, (There l a no difficulty In aelectkng dreaa Bhirts, Underwear3 hats, or scarfs became they are uaually made of one material,)
The question may arlae whether it %a wrong to buy materials that are a mixture of WOOLand angora, or caahmers and wool. There I s absolutely nothing wrong with t h l e type of mixture. Both are natural and are animal producta of good quality. However, combinatlone of silk and cotton are not proper. They are of two different Wnda.

Dear Friend :
3n this passage of Scripture, Christ

A atartling statement is found In Mark 9:48. spoke of a worm that "dieth not. Whoever heard of the Immortality of worms? What d l d Christ mean?

Some PEQPm t h i n k that Jesus was r e f e r r i n g to p e o p 1 e . a ~worms and was trying t o say that these "people" never died but lived on in agonizing torment. Those who say this f a i l to n o t i c e t h a t Jesus does n o t c a l l the wicked people "worms'' but instead speaks of T?iEIIR worm. The lexicons deflne t h e Hebrew (Isa. 65:24) and Greek (Mark 9 : 4 8 ) words translated "worm" a s a grub or maggot and I n no way refer to a m a n . C h r i s t was not teaching theimmortallty of people or woms !

--

Actually, Jesus was here warning hfs liatenem that those who would "offend" -- who w o u l d live a life of rebellion against God and His children -- would be cast i n t o ''hell f i r e . " Most Bibles show I n the marginal rendering that this was " G e h e m fire.'' Jeaw was referrfng to Cfehenna as a type of the second death in the "lake of fire" which will befall the ungodly.
Gehenna, or the Valley of W i n n o m , was located outaide of Jerusalem and was a place where trash, filth, and the dead bodies Qf a n h " S and despised crlmlnala were thrown. There were ledges along the edge of t h i a valley on whlch these dead bodies might land instead of falllng down into the f f r e s beneath where evergthinff was burned. Smith's B l b l e Dictionary g i v e s a description of thls v a l l e y -- w h m a s somet;hlna l i k e one of OUT c i t v dumps today where trash and rubbish are burned 9 .

If anything, especially a dead body, landed on a ledge above t h e f i r e s , I t would be devoured by many worms or maggots which were kept alive by the animal and vegetable substances d e p o a t e d there
It w a ~ these W Q ~ S t h a t C h r i a t was referring to when He said " t h e i r worm d i e t h n o t . I' But Christ dldn lt mean that each Individual worm continued to l i v e forever!

Actually, these worms, or maggots are t h e larvae wMch develop from egg8 depoaited by flies. They contZnue far only a f e w da In this larval stage, then pupate and f i n a l l y emerge &?lies, l a t e r dying. Theae are sclentiflc f a c t s , b o w n by any real student of science. And yet Some people thfnk t h a t Christ i orantl stated that these larvae continued to l l v e forever In t h a stage of development! This Jut goes to show t h a t we should always be careful to use wisdom and common sense in studying Godla Word. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of a sound mind (If T i m . 1~7). Iet ' 8 r i g h t l y u8e the minds Godus !
The Ctreek word wlzich was Inspired and translated into the word "worm" in this passage simply means a g r u b or maggot, and Is a collect&ve expression for a l l the woms that devour dead matter. Yes, t h e f l l e a t h a t these worms became, l i k e all o t h e r animals will return Do the dust from which they came. " A l l are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. (Eccl. =9,20).
I'

+
+

Thts 8ame reference to w o w I s found in Isaiah we again f i n d t h a t the i n s p i r e d word simply means a common grub or a maggot. These W Q ~ B larvae OF a l s o feed on t h e dead bodiea for a few days, and then emerge as f l l e a . Thus, these worm3 " d i e n o t " but continue to develop into F l i e s Just as any normal, healthy worm! The flies continue to d e p o s i t t h e i r eggs o n l y as long as there are dead bodies or o t h e r matter f o r the larvae to reed on.

66:24. Kere

Nelther do these worms have immortal soula! Ecclesiastes 3:19 shows that no creature, man or beast, is born with an immortal soul.
The Bible i s one book that makea good sense! So l e t ua always study these perplexing scriptures through, before we jump to concluaions. Then let; ua live by God's Word, so that we may be worthy of t h e girt of e t e r n e l life. Then we need not receive the wages of sin death (Rom. 6 : 2 3 ) . T h i s w i l l come by-a fire which w i l l not be quenched -- but will b u m i t a e l f ' out by consuming t U s earth and the bod= of a l m e w i c k e d T N e i t h e r will we need to worry about theee "worms" which w i l l l i v e on the bodies of transgresaore -- not at first consumed by fire until there are no more bodies l e f t . Then a l l wfll return to t h e d u s t and aahes (Mal. 4:1)*

One of the moat controveralal pointa of Scrlpture is whether Mark 16:9-20 l a actually a part of Scriptum. Let UB b r i e f l y understand the facts behind the controverey. The elghth verae of Mark, chapter 16, enda abruptly seemingly at a place where I t would be natural t o h w e ' t h e thought continue. Dear Friend:
How do y o u derive the figure of 2520 y e a m of punishment f o r Israel?

giving us prophetlc kega So that we m y unlock the myatesies of Bible prbphecy. In 11 Peter 1:19-20, we read t h a t no prophecy is of any p r i v a t e , or Individual, interpretation, Therefore we m u s t not i n t e r p r e t a prophecy apart from o t h e r Bcripture and using OUT own human understanding to arrive at a conclusion. We m u s t compare acripture with scrlpture f l n d the acrlptural

basic question involvine; God's methods of

interpretation of Bible symbols.

In this case, we should S i r s t understand that I n Leviticus 26, God promised I s r a e l great national bleaain 8 , b c l u d l n g the promlaes of national greatness to Abraham ?verse 421, If they w o u l d obey H i m . Then God romised that if they obstl~tely redZzsed to obey M m , He wou%-37h B them f o r a pun period c a l l e d -Seven tlmes.
Now let us see how the B i b l e interprets the meaning of tlmes. T w n to Revelation 12:6,14 and you w i l l B e e by e x a m m i o n that the two p e r i o d s of t i m e mentioned In these verses are exactly the same In length, They amount to 39 yeara I b o t h caaea. n T h e r e f o r e we h a w that I n a prophetic sense the word timea afmply means years! A-0, in verse 6 we see that the Bible itself shows that these years can be d i v i d e d into 360 day8 e c . ahapparently was the o r i g i n a l year length, Now multiplying these seven tlmes or years o r punlahment by 360, we f i n d that t h i s gives u a 2520 days.
But where do the years come in? k t UB Bee GodfB prophetic definition of da s when applied to the punishment of nations. In Numbers 14:&God said I s r a e l would bear t h e i r iniquities after the nlxmber of days they searched the land; f o r t y days, for a ear. T h l s I s the B i b l e definition each of a day of p u n i s e n T 0 is consistent!

So we ~ e t h a t the seven t i m e a or years of Israelqa e puniskwnent equals 2520 days ( ? X v a n d that theae days, accordfng to scriptural interpretation, are actually 2520 years

BaK 111. PASADHNA, CALIFORNIA

Dear Friend: When wag the B i b l e dlvided into chapters and verses?
The s y s t e m of dividing the Bible into c h a p t e r s and verses I s man-made and of comparatZvely recent origin. The Bible, as i n s p i r e d by God, had no such divisions,

Chapters and veraes are helpful in finding passage8 in the Bible, but the dIvis3.m i n t o chaptera and vemes haa often obacured the meaning of Scripture by brealdng sentences in the middle or by separating thoughts that ahould be Joined t o g e t h e r . Too m a n y people memly llft a V ~ F W out of I t s Betting and read a false meaning into it because they don't read the c o n t e x t in surroundlmg verses.

Perhaps the f h s t attempted division of the Bible m a undertaken by the early Jewa. Dwlng the time following the Babylonian c a p t i v l t y , they marked off' t h e scrolls i n t o divlslons and subdfvislons + T N s system was qul te dlfferent from the one that l a I u ~ e n today, however.
The flrst modem sys'tem of d i v i d i n g the Bible i n t o s e c t i o n s waa devlsed by Cardinal Hugo in the m i d - t h i r t e e n t h century. Hugo, who was compiling a concordance to the L a t i n Vulgate Version o f t h e Bible, found I t necessary to d l v l d e the Bible into sections. These sections basically became the chapters that we are acqminted w i t h today. As yet there were no divfsions into versea,

Later, i 1445, Mordecai Nathan, a Jew, d l v i d e d the n Hebrew O l d Testament I n t o chapters. He and a l a t e r scholar by the name of Athias are accredited with the further breakdown of the O l d Testament chapters i n t o verses.

In 1551 the New Te~tamentwas similarly subdivided into verses. T h i s work waa accompliahed by the famous English p r i n t e r , Robert Stephens, while riding on horseback from Switzerland to France. Ever since that t i m e , the Bible has retained the present chapter and verae sgatem.

Being man-devlsed, such a aystem l e not erfect In some p l a c e s , gtephens 1 divlZGnZ are inaZFwFe%idTEh to break-the sense bf the aubject. Because of such imperfec-

new system of supplementlng the chapter-verse dlvLsion been adopted in many of the newer revislona of the Bible. T h i s often h e l p s the reader to b e t t e r comprehend the subject matter.

Dear Friend:
Who were the Nicalaftanes? The doctrines 3f t h i s body of h e r e t i c s has never ceased to puzzle Church hlxtorilans. They have always Imagined that the Nlcoiaitanes had to be a small s e c t which separated from t h e great worldly body of prcfesslng Christians. It has never occurred to the schoLars t h a t t 3 e Nicolaltanes might be f h a t great body of professing Christians which has departed from the t r u e Chwch of God!

What does the word "Nicolaitane" mean?

"Nicolaitane" means one who l a ''a f o l l o w e r of N l c o l a s . " Who was t h a t Xicolas OS whom they weye f o l l o w e r s God reveals t h a t 7 F h a t e s the doctrine of t h a t man (Rev. 2~15).
But what does the name "NS~o1aa" come from? I t c u m 8 from two Greek words -- slikoa and lam. Nikos means "conqueror" or " d e s t r o y e r " a n d m means " p e o p r The o r i g i n a l Nicolas was the conqueror or destroyer of the p e o p l e ! That was m r e l y the Greek w o r d f o r Nimrod the o r i g i n a l a r c h Febel who conquered the people and founded man-made c l v i l i z a t l o n w l t h l r : two c e n t u r i e s a f t e r the Flood!

But "Baal" was n o t Nimrodfs only other NAME! HE EAD MANY others. One of these names was ''Smta," commonly used throughout A s i a Minor. This name o f N m may be f o m m Lernpriere I s - s m Dictionary.
Now y o u might ask, "IS t h e r e a n y con~ectlonbetween Mlmrod, who w a s called ' S a n t a , 8 a n d fSan:a C l a m f ? "

"SSANTA CLAUS" is but a shortened form of " S a n t a Nicholas '' or "Saint Nicholas. '' The followera of " St. Nlzholas" or Nimrod are -d"NICOLAITANES" IN THE NEW TESTAMENT! SO those people who falsely c a l l e d themselves " ChrSstiam'' continued to honor N i m r o d In the days of the Apostle J o h n ? just --a6 they do today!

Today, on w h a t date is "St. Nicholas" or Nimrod especially HONORFD? IB I t December 25? Yes! B u t why?

The Romans used to celebrate December 25 a s the Saturnalia the birthday of Sacurn or Nimrod, And is it a n y wonder that December 25, Nlmradt8 purported birthday, is STILL CELEBRATED IN HONOR OF "NICHOLAS" NIMROD -- THE FIRST GRSAT DES POT.

Yes, Santa Claus -- just B shortened form of Mieolas, the Greek name f o r Nimrod -- Is Nimrod deified. It S s he and not Jesus Christ whom the professing C h r l s t i a z serve to this day, and whom they honor at Chr3atmaa! The chief princes among God's created s p i r i t beings have g r e a t power and a u t h o r i t y over the n a t i o n a . But what Is the limit of t h e l r authority? How far does t h e i r authority and power extend? In Jude 8 and 9 we read: "These filthy dreamers ( e v l l men) deapfse dominion (au?hority), an6 speak e v i l of dignities (those who are given authority). Notice this scrlpzure! Evil men have no resuect f o r those in a u t h o r i t y , but Miihael, who is an archangel, showed respect t o the o f f i c e o f w i t g of S a t a n t h e D w i l . By this scripture we can see very c l e a r l y that Michael --does n o t have g r e a t e r rank t h a n S a t a n .

But Chrlst does have greater rank. If Michael d i d have g r e a t e r rank, he would have glven t h e D e v i l a command -- he c m l d have done t h e r e b u k f n g h i m s e l f , instead of saying, "The Lord rebuke thee."

Chriet ha8 been in authority over Satan since he was c r e a t e d as Lucifer, But Michael w a s not In a u t h o r i t y over h l m and could n o t g l v e h l m 8 command: he could only p a s s on 8 rebuke -- a command from the Lord, ChrSst (Jude 9 ) .

It is absolutely proven t h a t Michael could not have been C h r i s t ! Dear F r i e n d :

We are o f t e n asked, What can I do when my unconverted

One of lifers m o s t important l e s s o n s is t h e p r o p e r TIME.

Husbands are t o p r o v i d e f t h e l r o m houses (I Tim. Wives a r e told to submit themselves to t h e i r huabands (Eph. 5:22), and not to be i d l e (Prov. 31:27).

All of these things require TIME. Solomon s a i d , To every t h i n g t h e r e I s a season, and B time to every purpose under the heaven ( E c c l . 3 1 ).. There is a time to pray and t o study.
B u t , we must f i n d the r i g h t t i m e f o r prayer and study. W e should f i n d time t o pray when unconverted members o r the f a m i l y are e i t h e r away or preoccupied. We express love to them, not by m i n g to the prayer c l o s e t every time they come Into t h e house, but by spending t i m e In sincere, earnest prayer when they arenlt there. When they are home, that t i m e can be used to show o u r love to them, to be an example of good Christian l i v m If we neglect the unconverted members o f our family by spending excessive t i m e in i d l e praying w h i l e they are home, we will only succeed in d r i v i n g them f u r t h e r from Qed, and o u r prayers will have b e e n In valn. -

If your mate remalna at home all day, you should p l a n to a r i s e early i n t h e morning, praylng before he la awake. Later, it w o u l d be a slmple m a t t e r t o spend j u s t a f e w m f n u t e a -- even as lfttle as five or t e n in the bathroom if necessary, -in private p r a y e r .

--

With wisdom and d l s c r e t i o n , study and prayer c a n be handled so as to avoid any t y p e of c o n f l i c t . Do not study in one posltion at a t a b l e or desk hour a f t e r hour, ignoring your m a t e on the Sabbath! STUDY, yes! But study when he is readfng t h e paper, or occupied w i t h something else. Remember, It is

probably o n l y because your obvfoua preoccupation with study and prayer makes your mate feel gullty that he o b j e c t s . Try t o make it f i t I n t o the day a8 conveniently a3 p o s a l b l e , without calllng special attention t o I t by flaunting y o u r *rfghteousness openly before him,

Nearly &lwayaJ problems of this type arise when member is lacking in wisdom, and trying to appear OVERLY RIGHTEOUS as a sanctimonious studious "spf~:'L tual" person -but frm a wmng motlve!
