Upcoming gatherings are well worth braving the heat to experience
all the fun, the food, and the friends.
I
n coming weeks, the area will host a number of festi-
vals where people will come together and enjoy some
family fun. The focus of each festival variesand fla-
vorsthe gathering with a spiciness all its own.
Today, for example, is opening day of the 137th
annual Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Italian
Festival, to be held through next Monday, July 16. On
that day, the focus is on the religious faith of the Italian
farmers who more than a century ago held the first pro-
cession of saints through the streets of the fledgling
farming community. Leading up to next Monday, the fun
starts at 6 p.m. each day and includes amusement rides,
food stands featuring Italian and Spanish specialties as
well as carnival favorites, and bands and entertainment
including Jerry Blavat at 8 p.m. this evening. For a com-

The Puerto Rican Festival of New Jersey opens
the week of July 21 through 29 in their 45th annual
Celebration of Puerto Rican Culture.
On Saturday, July 21, the Annual Banquet will take
place at Divine Mercy Parish located at 23 W. Chestnut
Ave., $50 per person/includes dinner, drinks and enter-
tainment.
The next day, Sunday, July 22, will feature the Flag
Raising Ceremony on the steps of Vineland City Hall
Cruisin the Delaware Bay
The Delaware Bay Lighthouse Keepers & Fiends Association will host four
lighthouse cruises on Delaware Bay this summer.
Sunday, July 15, 3:30 p.m.: Sunset Cruise to Harbor of Refuge.
Saturday, August 4, 4:30 p.m.: Moonlight Cruise to Ship John Shoal.
Sunday, August 12, 4:30 p.m.: Sunset Cruise to Ship John Shoal.
Saturday, August 25, 4 p.m: Moonlight Cruise to Brandywine Shoal.
Cruises leave from Dock 5, the state marina, in Fortescue, aboard the
Bonanza II. You may bring a bag lunch; water and sodas will be provided.
Tickets are $40; $20 for kids under 12. Lighthouses seen will depend
on which cruise you take.
Reservations are required. Call 856-825-0123 or 856-691-8224. Cruises
fill up very quickly so reserve early.
Summertime
is Festival Time
The beach moves inland to Landis Avenue for the Vineland Seafood Festival.
Other area festivals focus on religious and cultural heritage.

Trade Winds
Our columnist still sees Jersey for its
strangeness every now and then.
I
ts been almost 27 years since I
moved to beautiful South Jersey but
every so often I still get that
stranger in a strange land feeling.
For instance, last week we were driving to
a friend's house for dinner. Along the way
we passed field after field of farmcrops.
Imstill amazed by that because, grow-
ing up in Detroit, the only green I sawon a
regular basis were the traffic signals.
Which is not to say that I didnt get
some farmexperience, because each sum-
mer each of us grandkids got to spend a
week on my grandparents 40-acre farmup
in Michigans thumb area.
Gramps, who had severe arthritis, let
the farmer across the road work his farm
but the only thing I can ever remember
themgrowing were sugar beets.
To this day, Imstill not sure what a
sugar beet is, but I knowMichigan used to
produce a lot of them.
And I couldn't tell a sugar beet plant
froma rose bush.
Anyway, when I mentioned the crops to
my wife, she said, those are peppers,
those over there are eggplant and the ones
there are long hots.
I was impressed. So I kept an eye peeled
the rest of the drive for a cornfield, which I
was fairly certain I could identify.
No such luck, although Imnot certain
it would have impressed her anyway.
At our friends, I was offered a fried
squash flower as an appetizer.
Now, I had heard of them, although Id
never tried them. My wife makes them
occasionally but always follows her aunts
recipe, which calls for dredging themin
egg wash.
Imallergic to egg, so I never took the
chance.
When I passed on the appetizer, I
explained my allergy.
No problem, he said, these are done
in a beer batter. No eggs.
The first one was delicious. So were the
next seven or eight.
A fewdays later I got that same feeling
of strangeness at the dinner table. My step-
son had dropped us off some escarole and
my wife made soup.
Left to my own devices Imnot sure
what I would have done with escarole but
I dont think I would have come up with
soup; a salad maybe, or food for the rabbits
in our yard.
The soup, however, was delicious.
But who would have thought it possi-
ble? Of course, I say the same thing about
broccoli rabe, dandelion greens, and egg-
plant. Those are all things Id never experi-
enced until my arrival here either.
My parents both grewup on farms but
moved to the city (Detroit) for work. Mom
didnt want to have anything more to do
with farms but Dad always kept a very
small garden (tomatoes and rhubarb) and
lots of flowers.
Our weekly diet was pretty predictable.
Not bad; just predictable.
An exotic dinner for us would be either
Italian or Chinese. Both came boxed.
If Chinese, it was that LaChoy complete kit
that gave you a big can of chowmein, a little bag
of rice to cook and a can of fried noodles.
I cant remember if the soy sauce came
with it.
If Italian, it was the Chef Boyardee kit
that gave you the box of spaghetti, a can of
sauce and a little shaker of parmesan cheese.
These days, when my wife says we are
having spaghetti, I never knowwhat to
expect; but I knowits not coming out of a
boxed kit.
Why, Ive actually enjoyed spaghetti
shaped like corkscrews and covered with
green (not red!) sauce.
Southern NewJersey is such a wonder-
ful countryeven if we do have some crazy
weather.
I think Ive mentioned before that my
one wor' description for South Jersey
would be windy.
Boy, was that ever true when that little
weather phenomenon hit the weekend
before last.
The weather pundits even came up
with a newword (or at least newto me) to
describe it.
I think the word sounded like duran-
go (which sounds suspiciously like an old
John Wayne movie to me). I cant check
the spelling becauseas of this writing
were still without internet service. (Ed.
note: The actual word is derecho, a new
weather word to add to our vocabularies.)
At least the stormdidnt seemto hurt
the farmers too much.
The tomatoes are coming in soon,
which means Ill soon be enjoying what I
think of as the signature South Jersey
sandwichtoasted Italian bread, heavily
buttered, with thick slices of fresh tomato
(still warmfromthe sun, if possible) and a
dash of sea salt. I

Millville Dentist Awards Good Deed Honor
Millville dentist Dr. George
Kourakin has honored a Bridgeton
student for his efforts to save an
endangered species.
The dentist first launched his
Good Deed Contest in the begin-
ning of the 2011-2012 school year to
encourage youths under 18 years of
age to do a good deed.
I wanted students to get involved
in this contest, because I feel it is
necessary to reward good deeds,
rather than complain of shortcom-
ings, said Dr. Kourakin. If we
reward our youth for a job well
done, we can actually prompt more
of those good activities.
Students of all ages throughout
Cumberland County wrote about the good deeds they have done, ranging from
personal charity and kindness to group community service projects, for the
chance to win a new laptop.
The contest winner, 10-year-old Jacob Cobb, worked with his classmates in
Mrs. Batemans fourth-grade class at Woodland Country Day School to spread
awareness of the danger facing orangutans in the wake of habitat destruction.
Cobb and his classmates educated fellow students on how they can help the
endangered species through posters and public speaking. The class also held
bake sales to raise money for the Orangutan Foundation.
Since Cobbs good deed involved a whole class of students, he requested that
the money intended for the purchase of a new personal laptop instead be used
to help save the orangutans. Dr. Kourakin donated the amount, $300, to the
World Wildlife Fund.
On June 27, Dr. Kourakin awarded Cobb a Good Deed certificate at his den-
tal office, My Dentist, located at 16 West Vine Street in Millville. Cobb also
received a few surprises from the World Wildlife Fund.
This contest, which is intended to become an annual occurrence, wont be the
last community event hosted by My Dentist.
We will be conducting similar community events in Millville periodically
throughout the year, Dr. Kourakin said. It is important for me to stay involved
and give back to my community and the surrounding areas while encouraging
and promoting civic pride.

Darden Awards Boys & Girls Club Grant
The Darden Restaurants, which consists of Red Lobster and Longhorn
Steakhouse, recently presented the Boys & Girls Club of Vineland with a $2,000
grant for its Cultural Dance Program. The dance program consists of Hip Hop,
Zumba and other modern dance styles as well as nutrition and fitness education
for youth.

cial note, the Darden employees danced with the children and also created a "human
sculpture" during its after-school program held at the Carl Arthur Center in Vineland.
Ronald McDonald House Commends Local Author
As the lazy days of summer fill the calendar, the Ronald McDonald House is
anything but quiet.
On behalf of the families that are currently staying at the Ronald McDonald
House of Southern New Jersey, the staff at RMH would like to commend Alesia
Shute, local author and President of the Alesia Shute Foundation, for providing
delicious meals to families in need.
From the moment Alesia walked through our doors, there was an energy in
the air that made everyone come alive with excitement, said Sonia Mixter
Guzman, house manager of RMH of SNJ. She went above and beyond by not
only bringing dinner, but also providing such a generous check. If it were not for
her support, we would not be able to provide a hot meal for a hungry tummy or
a pillow for a worried head. The entire staff would like to wholeheartedly thank
her for her contributions.
As we welcome families from other counties and countries, we reflect on the
generosity of donors like Alesia, that make this house a home for so many chil-
dren. We are especially grateful for her ability to juggle the everyday struggles
and still find the time to care. We are so grateful to the Alesia Shute Foundation
for all the support.

group from New York, performs folk music
with an emphasis on songs of the sea and

Raising Ceremony will be held at Millville
City Hall at 1 p.m. and at Bridgeton

There will be activities, food, rides and
entertainment at Landis Park every day
Monday through Saturday after 3 p.m.; with
different days being dedicated to seniors,
women, youth, Puerto Rican Folklore and
International Latin Day.
The culmination of the celebration will
be the Puerto Rican Parade starting 1 p.m at
Landis Ave. and Delsea Dr. and ending at
Landis Park with activities that continue
until closing at 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 29.
The Puerto Rican Festival is sponsored in
part by the Cultural Heritage Commission of

Downtown Vineland will again be the
site of the Vineland Seafood Festival.
Sponsored by Newfield Bank, the Festival
will be held on Saturday, July 21 (rain
date: July 22), when Landis Avenue will
turn into a manmade beach between Sixth
and Seventh streets.
This years event features the larest
seafood vendor list ever, including
Merighis Savoy Inn, Greenview Inn,
Marcianos Restaurant, Larrys II, Lurie
Lucianos Fresh Market, Las Lomas
Mexican Grille, Cruisin Kitchen, North
Italy Club, Taste of the Island, The Shrimp
Man, Dads Seafood, Moris Restaurant,
Bi-Catch Cafe, and a great cast of support-
ing vendors featuring Bellview Winery,
Margarita Doctor, Sweet Life Bakery,
Tickly Your Taste Buds, and Myro Dog.
For entertainment, the festival will fea-
ture two well-known local bands in
Double Helix and the Voodudes.
Along with seafood specialities, the
event will feature standard seafood sta-
ples, including crabs, clams, oysters,
shrimp, mussels, and fresh fish. Plus ice
cream and soft drinks, and classic sum-
mertime food for the non-seafood fan,
including hamburgers, hot dogs, steamed
corn, french fries and grilled chicken.
The festival will start at 4 p.m. and is
expected to go until 9 p.m. No pets, skate-
boards or bikes will be permitted in the
event block area.
For a real peach of a festival, try the
6th Annual Peach Festival, held at
Malaga Camp, 4500 N. Delsea Drive, in
Newfield, on Saturday, August 25, from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m. There, youll find all things
related to peaches, a tasty product for
which the area is well known. It has been
held the last five years at the peak of the

ODowd highlighted the
states commitment to
quality health care in
the FY2013 budget,
which provides nearly
$1 billion in hospital
funding to support care
to the uninsured and
underinsured.
The entire South
Jersey Healthcare system will receive $7.4 million in state hospital funding, an
increase of more than $138,000 over last year. South Jersey Healthcare Elmer
Hospital will see an increase of $17,000 in state funding in this years budget.
As part of her visit, Commissioner ODowd toured the hospitals maternity
unit to view the advancements Elmer Hospital made to achieve Baby Friendly
status. South Jersey Healthcare Elmer Hospital was the first hospital in New
Jersey to achieve the Baby-Friendly designation.
The designation is from Baby-Friendly, USA, an accrediting body that imple-
ments the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF) and World Health
Organization (WHO) Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. The initiative encourages
and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care
for infant feeding.
Elmer Hospital is one of only two hospitals in the state that have received the
Baby-Friendly designation. Capital Health in Hopewell was the second hospital
in New Jersey to receive the designation.

monthly meeting
held at the YMCA.
Holden is part of
the Vineland
Positive Youth
Coalition (formerly
Prevention Policy
Board), which is
made up of repre-
sentatives of gov-
ernment, schools and non-profit organizations from throughout the Cumberland
County region. The group's major purpose is to prevent youth from entering the
juvenile justice system.
Holden explained that a big part of the organization's focus is the Vineland
Mentoring Initiativea program that provides positive role models to at-risk ele-
mentary-aged youth in the area. Mentoring services provided through this initia-
tive include individual and school-based mentoring services to youth on a con-
sistent basis.

he metaphoric road to develop-
ing the resort town of Sea Isle
City was paved with the cre-
ation of railway lines, the acqui-
sition of land titles and the assistance of
local businessmen, but there were other
factors that also made the newest dream
of Charles K. Landis a reality. Sufficient
funds and an interested public were need-
ed to ensure its success as well.
After taking several mortgages in the
early stages of establishing his resort
town, Landis finally undertook a move
that clearly provided him with the advan-
tage in this new enterprise. He recorded
this move in the September 24, 1880, entry
in his journal: Established mortgage of
$10,000 Ludlams Island & cancelled the
other mortgages. Paid $2,050 for this
money. It give[s] me however, the control
of the Island. I negotiated the matter
through Henry Whelan. The commission
and what has been expended comes to
$7,500. I got $1,000 and expect to get the
balance in a few days. This will pay my
taxes and stave off some of my dunsI
shall now establish the Island enterprise
soon as possible.
As early as February 1880, Landis had
been contacted by individuals interested
in purchasing property in Sea Isle, but
buyers needed to be patient for another
year before they had their chance to
become official residents. According to
Jeffrey M. Dorwart s book Cape May
County, New Jersey: The Making of an
American Resort Community, Landis
incorporated, along with his chief clerk
John Burk and Philip P. Baker, the Sea Isle
City Improvement Company to sell land
and build houses, hotels, docks, seawalls
and piers. Landis would serve as presi-
dent of the group, with Burk as secretary
and William A. House as treasurer.
Dorwart also reports that Landis offered
one million dollars in capital stock, pro-
vided tours for interested investors and
directed installation of gas, waterworks
and electric lighting.
According to 1881 promotional material
reproduced in South Jersey Magazine, the
Sea Isle City Improvement Company, with
a Board of Directors consisting of Landis,
Burk, Baker, House, Seaman R. Fowler,
Henry Hartson and Benjamin Swain, Jr.,
owned 960 acres of landing, fronting
three miles upon the Beach and embrac-
ing 5,405 town lots north of the railroad.
The property south of the railway was a
private enterprise.
By spring 1881, advertisements for Sea
Isle began appearing and the selling of
property commenced. Proclaiming the
availability of lots 50 feet front by 110 feet
deep, the ads offered oceanfront location
and corner lots for $250 and others for
$150. Landis also provided a map of the
town, displaying the 60 blocks on one side
of Railroad Avenue and 76 blocks on the
other side that contained property for sale.
Each block contained a total of 24 lots.
Tours were available seven days a week,
with a surveyor always present to show
lots. The West Jersey Railroad provided
transportation for prospective buyers.
The map is revealing in not only detail-
ing the lots advertised by the Sea Isle City
Improvement Company, but in highlight-
ing the sales that occurred in the first two
months of promotion. By June, much of
the beachfront property had been pur-
chased as well as the next two blocks clos-
est to Railroad Avenue.
The advantages afforded those pur-
chasing Sea Isle property was carefully
outlined in the engineers report used to
entice interested buyers: The island is 6
miles in lengthand is surrounded by
the Atlantic Ocean, Ludlam Bay and a nav-
igable channel called the Thoroughfare,
furnishing excellent advantages for fish-
ing, sailing and still water bathing. A
beach 150 feet wide extends the entire
length of the Island [with] unusual facili-
ties for walking and bathing which are not
excelled by any watering place on the
coastthe advantages the beach affords
for bathing are excellent, there being no
undertow perceptible and in this respect
peculiar.
There is one other thing the map of the
town illuminates when examined careful-
ly. While there are a series of streets
named after aquatic items such as
Dolphin, Pearl, Coral and Shell,
another collection of roadways bear
names that were not particularly indige-
nous to the area until the establishment of
Sea Isle: Whelen, House, Hartson,
Swain, Fowler and Landis. I

Visitors Center Relocates to
Robert Gibbon Johnson House
Freeholder Director Julie A. Acton today
announced that the Salem County Visitors
Center located at #1 Market Street, Salem
has relocated to the Robert Gibbon Johnson
House (New Johnson Hall), 90 Market
Street, Salem, home of the Salem County
Chamber of Commerce.
The house looks great and definitely
ready for visitors, said Freeholder Director
Julie Acton. The Robert Gibbon Johnson
house has stood majestically since 1806. Its
a perfect early American architectural
example.
The Salem County Interim Visitors
Center (Salem Municipal Building) located
at #1 New Market St. in Salem was opened
on May 31, 2003. Using the historic city
building was a stopgap measure until
Johnson Hall was renovated.
The Salem County Visitors Center will
contain maps and other information about
people, places and events in Salem County
and around the State of New Jersey. The
center will be overseen by the Chamber of
Commerce during the week and
Experience Works personnel on the week-
ends.
The newly relocated Visitors Center will
be open seven days a week, Monday
through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., week-
ends 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
To celebrate the new location, a ribbon
cutting ceremony and grand re-opening has
been planned for Friday, July 20, at 10 a.m.

How to Choose Your New Best
Friend from An Animal Shelter
Among the biggest victims of the eco-
nomic recession are the once beloved fam-
ily pets surrendered to shelters, as their
owners deal with extended joblessness.
The U.S. Humane Society estimates that 6
to 8 million dogs and cats enter shelters
each yearand 3 to 4 million are eutha-
nized.
We dont have firm numbers but we
know anecdotally that the communities
that have been hardest hit by the economic
downturn are seeing that reflected in their
shelter intake numbers, says Inga Fricke,
director of sheltering issues for the U.S.
Humane Society. And, unfortunately,
while the majority of the public is in favor
of adopting pets from shelters, very few
usually about 20 percentactually do.
That has recently gone up slightly to the
mid-20s.
Fricke and retired police officer Irvin
Cannon, a confirmed dog lover whose new
book, For the Love of Dog Tales
(www.FortheLoveofDogTales.com), gives
voice to mans best friend, hope people
getting back on their feet will consider
adopting a shelter dog.
You wont find a better companion,
whether you bring home a mystery mixed-
breed or a purebred Labrador, he says.
Everyone thinks mutts are smarter and
generally healthier, but really, it all
depends on their mix of breeds and which
breed strain is dominant.
Border collies and Rottweilers are two
of the smartest breeds, Cannon says. But
they tend to have other traits, too, which
are just as important to consider when
choosing what dog best suits your lifestyle.
Remember, dogs are as individual as peo-
ple. A dogs breed, or breed mix, is no
guarantee that it will have certain traits.
That said, border collies tend to need
lots of room to run and lots of attention
theyre high-maintenance, Cannon says. If
you cant spend a lot of active time with
them, theyll be unhappy and youll have
problems.
Rottweilers are fast learners and love-
able family animals, but they also tend to
have bold personalities associated with
pack leaders. If you dont think you can
assert your authority, or if you have young
or shy children, you might want to consid-
er a more submissive breed. Dominant
dogs that are allowed to bully their family
members can become dangerously aggres-
sive.
Here are some other tidbits regarding
breeds:
Among other dog breeds known for
intelligence: Shetland sheepdogs, golden
retrievers, Labrador retrievers, poodles,
Australian cattle dogs, Papillons and
Doberman pinschers.
Bulldogs, beagles and Basset hounds
all start with B but get much lower
grades for smarts.
Its a myth that mutts have fewer
health issues than purebred dogs. Because
some breeds have tendencies toward prob-
lems such as deafness, blindness or hip
dysplasia, remember, these are genetic
issues that are inherited. So if youre
mixed-breed includes some German shep-
herd, it may also have hip dysplasia (a
problem with the joints bone structure).
If youre in the market for a purebred
dog, you have a 25 percent chance of find-
ing onealthough maybe not the breed
you wantat a shelter. If your heart is set
on a specific breed, check your area for a
rescue group specializing in that breed.

Many owners don't consider this cruel or meanin fact quite the opposite
they believe they are giving the dog an enjoyable day out with their owner.
Unfortunately many of these owners also learn the hard way just what can
happen to a pet left in a car for even as little as five minutes. Whether in the
full sun or full shade, windows up, cracked or completely down, water avail-
able or notdon't leave your pet in the car. Not only is it not a good idea,
it's a crime.
If you see an animal left in a vehicle, please act by contacting a store
employee, your local police department and local humane society or SPCA.
Think just a few minutes for you to run into your favorite store isn't a
problem? On a warm day, the temperature in a car can reach 120 degrees in
just two minutes, even with the windows partially open. If you see an animal
alone in a car during warm weather, call the Cumberland County SPCA at
856-691-1500.

Development Program
offers a special opportu-
nity for kids to connect
with the States agricul-
tural heritage through the
animal science program.
Youth can learn about all
aspects of raising ani-
malshow to care for,
feed, breed and select
animals for show, market
or pleasure. Through the
4-H animal science pro-
gram, children have the
opportunity to learn
about horses, dairy and
beef cattle, sheep, pigs,
chickens and other farm
animals to which they
otherwise might not have
access.
The goal of the animal science program is the same as that for all 4-H
programsto teach children important life skills through hands-on learning.
While learning about their animal of choice, children in the animal science
clubs gain a sense of responsibility, learn how to keep accurate records, gain
self-confidence, discover potential careers, learn to present themselves in
public and at the same time have a lot of fun. They may also participate in
special county-wide, state and national 4-H programs.
In addition to animal science clubs, events such as the Hippology, Horse
Bowl, Horse Judging and even model horse shows allow children who do not
own a horse to learn more about them. These 4-H events are becoming
more popular as farmland continues to decrease in New Jersey. But,
regardless of what kind of 4-H club a child belongs to, the theme is the
sameto make learning fun.
The 4-H Youth Development Program is part of Rutgers Cooperative
Extension, a unit of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. 4-H
educational programs are offered to all youth, grades K-13, on an age-appro-
priate basis, without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry,
and any other category protected by law.

earned Principals List honors for the fourth marking period. To achieve this distinc-
tion, high school students must have a grade-point average of 3.75 or above. In ele-
mentary and middle schools, students must have all A's.

Buying, selling, and donating used items
reduces waste and promotes recycling.
There are many organizations that distrib-
ute durable goods in usable condition.
Some of these organizations offer pick up
services, others provide collection contain-
ers or provide resale facilities. You can also
buy or sell unwanted items through classi-
fied ads, community bulletin boards, con-
signment shops, and yard sales.
Many organizations such as schools,
churches, YMCAs, Big Brothers/Big
Sisters, senior citizen centers, and social
service organizations have a need for things
such as clothing, food, appliances, toys,
office equipment, books, and audio-visual
equipment. They would be glad to have
items in good working condition. You will
be saving valuable landfill space as well as
precious natural resources while helping
someone in need.
You can cut down on the amount of dis-
posable materials by choosing products
carefully when you shop. Also, keep in
mind that everyday items can have more
than one use, and more than one user. For
instance, after reading a book or magazine,
you can give it to someone else like a
friend, nursing home, or hospital. Dennis

residents to recycling that old telephone
book with your paper and replace it with
the new one recently delivered to your
home. Please remember the Authority now
recycles plastics with the number 1, 2, 4, 5,
and 7. We can also recycling carton con-

Lost Trees
With all the downed trees from the
recent stormand the cleanup that now
must occurits easy to make the leaf in
thinking that fewer trees might be better
for you and your family. In fact, there are
more reasons to surround yourself with
trees than not. Replacing lost trees in your
yard has economic benefits, helps you save
energy, will improve your environmental
health, and has social advantages:
ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTIONS
Trees or lack of trees can influence eco-
nomics. A property for sale with five large
trees in the front yard yields a 4 percent
higher price than property with small trees
or no trees. Similarly, apartments and
offices with a green view rent quickly and

Tree Jobs: In the United States, there
are approximately 40,000 people working
in forestry related fields. The practice of
growing, maintaining, and harvesting trees
for forest products is good for the environ-
ment and the economy.

tion. Those same trees serve as windbreaks
for those cold winter winds, and reduce
heating costs by 30 percent. As few as three
trees properly positioned can save the aver-
age household between $100 and $250
annually in energy costs.
Block Wind: Rows of trees reduce wind-
speed by up to about 85 percent, with max-
imum reductions increasing in proportion
to visual density. Because even a single row
of dense conifers can cause large reduc-
tions in windspeed, effective windbreaks
can be planted on relatively small house
lots. Compared with an open area, a good
windbreak that does not shade the house
will save about 15 percent of the heat ener-
gy used in a typical home.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
Improve air quality: Trees help trap and
hold particle pollutants such as dust, pollen
and smoke that can damage our lungs.
Trees remove pollutants by absorbing them
through the pores in the leaf surface.
Particulates are trapped and filtered by
leaves, stems and twigs, and washed to the
ground by rainfall. Trees also absorb CO
2
and other dangerous gasses and replenish
the atmosphere with oxygen. Yearly, one
acre of trees absorbs enough CO
2
to offset a
car driven 26, 000 miles and produces
enough oxygen for 18 people.
Filter water: Trees help keep water
clean and drinkable. When non-point
source pollution such as oil, fertilizers, and
sediment get washed away with the rain,
tree roots can trap and filter out the con-
taminants before they affect the water sup-
ply.
Reduce runoff: One hundred mature
trees can intercept 100,000 gallons of rain-
fall per year. The rain falls on the canopy,
catching the water and allowing it to gently
drip to the ground or evaporate. This
lessens street flooding and soil erosion.
Provide wildlife habitat: Wherever trees
are established, wildlife and other plants
are sure to follow. Trees and associated
plants provide shelter and food for a variety
of birds and small animals. The presence of
trees creates an environment that allows
the growth of plants that otherwise would
not be there, enhancing the diversity.
SOCIAL ADVANTAGES
Reduce Medical Costs: Trees have a pro-
found effect on those under medical care. A
study of gallbladder surgery patients found
that patients with a view of trees not only
got out of the hospital one day sooner, but
also had fewer complications and needed
less pain medication. Another study found
that psychiatric patients exposed to green-
space socialized more and had fewer nega-
tive encounters.
Provide Recreation Opportunities: Parks
and greenspaces provide a place for recre-
ation such as hiking, fishing, and nature
watching. These activities not only allow us
to connect with the natural environment,
but it also provides exercise.
Calm Nervousness and Stress: Nature
has been proven to reduce the stress
response in both the mind and body. A
tree-lined highway quells road rage.
Children with Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are more
focused and are able to complete tasks
while in a natural environment.
Connect with Nature: When community
members join together for a tree planting
or clean-up, they feel a sense of environ-
mental responsibility and a connection
with their natural environment. The resi-
dents also have a more positive perception
of their community once they had a hand
in improving it. I

Tree Planting Steps
1. Dig: Dig at least 1- 2 feet wider
than the root ball.
2. Measure: Using a tape measure,
stick, or end of a shovel, measure
the height of the rootball and then
measure the depth of the hole.
Add or remove soil in the hole so
the top of the rootball will be flush
with the ground.
3. Place: If the root ball has a wire
basket, remove the bottom third of
the basket. Gently roll the rootball
into the hole. Do not move tree by
its trunk.
4. Adjust: Look at the tree from a
few angles, making sure that the
tree is straight. If needed, add soil
under the rootball. Once the tree is
in the hole and straight, remove
the rest of the wire basket.
5. Loosen Burlap: If balled with
burlap, pull the burlap away from
the tree trunk or remove the
burlap.
6. Fill: Slightly compact the soil as
you fill the hole.
7. Mulch and water: Mulch around
the tree in a doughnut shape and
water thoroughly. Continue to
water the tree as needed.
