Air pollution occurs when the air contains gases, dust, fumes or odor in harmful amounts.

That is, amounts which could be harmful to the health or comfort of humans and animals or which could cause damage to plants and materials. The substances that cause air pollution are called pollutants. Pollutants that are pumped into our atmosphere and directly pollute the air are called primary pollutants. Further pollution can arise if primary pollutants in the atmosphere undergo chemical reactions. The resulting compounds are called secondary pollutants.

STEPS TO CONTROL AIR POLLUTION

Cars should be equipped with catalytic converters to reduce the emission of pollutants. Factories should be set up far away from housing areas. Factories should filter smoke before it is released. Factories should use less chlorofluorocarbon. Motorists should use unleaded petrol. Anti-pollution laws must be strictly enforced and obeyed. The habit of smoking must be stopped. The public should stop open burning of rubbish. Rubbish must be buried or incinerated.

WAYS TO KEEP THE AIR CLEAN

Government should encourage people to practise carpooling, cycling and walk if the destination is near. Motorists, car driver and lorry driver should use unleaded petrol. Reduce the use of aerosol spray and air-conditioner that can cause chlorofluorocarbon and damage the ozone layer. Stop open burning of rubbish law must be strictly force. Industries must be away from the housing areas.
