1. Introduction - The word corrosion is as old as the earth, has been known by different names. - Corrosion is known as rust, an phenomena which destroy the luster and beauty of objects and shorten their life.

2. Definitions
Several definitions of corrosion: Corrosion is the degradation/deterioration of a material, usually a metal, by chemical or electrochemical reaction with its environment. Corrosion - surface wastage that occurs when metals are exposed to reactive environments. Corrosion - interaction between a metal and environments that will result in its gradual destruction.

3. Cost of corrosion/Economic use

- The direct corrosion cost was estimated 3 - 5% GNP - GNP Malaysia = 126 billion USD corrosion cost in malaysia = ....? - Corrosion cost in USA - 276 billion USD, 3.1% of national gross product.

In UK - 4-5% of GNP. In Japan - 5258 trillion Yen per year. At most industrialized nations, average corrosion cost : 3.5 - 4.5% of GNP.

Startling of corrosion losses: - Automobiles corrosion-free life in the Arabian Gulf coastal regions only six month - Nearly 95% - concrete damage in most of the sea coastal region caused by reinforcement corrosion.

10% - aircraft maintenance in USA spent on corrosion remediation. Major annual corrosion losses in UK: 350 million in transport 280 million in marine 250 in buildings and construction 180 million in oil and chemical industries

- About $120 billion spent on maintenance aging and deteriorating infrastructures in USA:

- Annually costs $23.4 billion for automotive corrosion
