Tawheed
The linguistic meaning of tawheed is unification or making something one or asserting oneness. It comes from the Arabic verb wahhada, which itself means to unite, unify or consolidate. When the word tawheed is used in reference to Allah the Exalted, it means realizing and affirming Allah the Most Highs unity in all of mans actions which directly or indirectly relate to Him.

3 Categories of Tawheed

3 Categories of Tawheed Allah the Almighty is One without partner in His dominion Tawheed arRuboobeeyah Allah the Almighty is One without similitude in His essence and attributes Tawheed al asmat was siffat Allah the Almighty is One without rival in His divinity and in worship Tawheed alebaadah

Tawheed ar-Ruboobeeyah

This means to maintain the Oneness of Lordship. This is based on the following concepts: Allah alone caused everything to exist when there was nothing. He is the only One who sustains and maintains His creation. He has no need from it or for it. He is the sole Lord of the universe and its inhabitants. He has no real challenge to His Lordship.

Practical Example of Tawheed ar-Ruboobeeyah: The Youth of the Cave

Al-Kahf 18:10: [Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us our affair right guidance. The youth were facing those who were misguided. They believed in their Lord and so they made the requests above from Allah the Merciful: Grant them Mercy Guide them 18:13-14: It is We who relate to you, their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance. And We made firm their hearts when they stood up and said, Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then, an excessive transgression In the above Ayats, we see that these youth stood up to those who were worshipping other than Allah the Almighty and affirmed their Tawheed, stating: Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. So we see the youth above realizing and affirming the unity of Allah the Most High by stating that they will not invoke besides Allah the Almighty any other deity. They also stated in the form of a rhetorical question, that the people have no authority or evidence of those other deities worshipped along with Allah the Most High. Here, the youth demonstrate maintaining the oneness of Lordship of Allah the Almighty or Tawheed ar-Ruboobeeyah by stating that they will not invoke besides Him any other deity and by stating there is no evidence for the existence of any other deity. In Tawheed ar-Ruboobeeyah, we learn that Allah the Exalted Alone is the sole Lord of the Universe with no challenge to His Lordship. The youth have affirmed this in their statement above.

Practical Example of Tawheed ar-Ruboobeeyah: The Two Men With Gardens

Al-Kahf 18:35: And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. He said, I do not think that this will perish ever 37-39 His companion said to him Have you disbelieved in He who created you? But as for me, He is Allah, my Lord, and I do not associate with my Lord anyone. And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, What Allah willed [has occured]; there is no power except in Allah?... Here the companion affirms Allah the Almightys Ruboobeyah by recognizing: It is only Allah the Almighty who created us, ie. Allah the Almighty alone created us when there was nothing. Nothing happens but by the will of Allah the Most High, ie. Allah the Almighty is the only one who sustains and maintains His creation. Saying that he will not associate with his Lord anyone, recognizing that Allah the Almighty is the sole Lord of the universe. Al-Kahf 18:42: And his fruits were encompassed [by ruin], so he began to turn his hands about [in dismay] over what he had spent on it, while it had collapsed upon its trellises, and said, Oh, I wish I had not associated with my Lord anyone. When the arrogant man realized that he had associated partners with Allah the Almighty (ie. denied Tawheed), it was too late.
