What is achievement motivation and its effect on performance?

Achievement motivation is the drive to achieve success for its own sake, and is related to competitiveness, persistence and striving for perfection.

Achievement motivation is influence by: Personality factors, which are: The need to achieve (Nach) The need to avoid failure (NAF) Situational factors, which are: probability of success Incentive value of success

Achievement Motivation
Key word- Competitiveness The degree to which a person has the motivation to approach and achieve success in sport

Achievement motivation links personality with the degree of competitiveness shown by an individual. Its main focus is the extent to which an individual is motivated to attain success. Murray (1938) believed that a competitive inclination is a product of nature. Bandura (1977) believed that a competitive drive was a product of learning.

Atkinson and McClelland (1976)


Predicts that achievement motivation is generated through a combination of personality and situational factors. They view achievement motivation as a personality trait which is activated by a situation. The situation comprises the probability of success and the incentive value of success.
Probability of successThe extend to which success is likely. If the task is found easy success is more likely to happen. The degree of pleasure experienced when success is achieved. The harder the task the greater the incentive value.

Incentive value of success

The desire to succeed far outweighs the fear of failure. These performers are high in achievement motivation and are refereed to as high achievers.

The fear of failure far outweighs the desire for success. These performers are low in achievement motivation and are referred to as low achievers.
