INTRODUCTION

Serve a dual purpose

:: Contributing to vehicles road holding for good active safety :: Keep vehicle occupants comfortable and reasonably well. Protects the vehicle from damage and wear.

Suspension is the term given to the system of springs, shock absorbers and linkages that connects a vehicle to its wheels.

Suspension System

Supports the weight Works with the steering system to keeps the wheel in correct alignment

Provides a smooth ride

Allows front wheels to turn side to side for steering

Suspension System

Allows rapid cornering without extreme body roll

Prevents excessive body dive Prevents excessive body squat

Keeps tires in firm contact with the road

PART IN SUSPENSION SYSTEM

CONTROL ARM movable lever that fastens the steering knuckle to the vehicles body or frame.

STEERING KNUCKLE provides a spindle or bearing support for the wheel hub, bearings and wheel assembly.

BALL JOINTS swivel joints that allow control arm and steering knuckle to move up and down and side to side.

SPRINGS supports the weight of the vehicle; permits the control arm and Wheel to move up and down.

SHOCK ABSORBERS OR DAMPENERS keeps the suspension from continuing to bounce after spring compression and extension.

CONTROL ARM BUSHING sleeves that allows the control arm to swing up and down on the frame.

STABILIZER to reduce body roll and keep the body from leaning excessively in sharp turns.

STRUT ROD to keep two other components separate, performing the opposite function of a tie.

CAMBER

Camber is the angle that the vertical axis of the wheel

makes with the road surface. Negative camber is when the top of the wheel leans into the centre of the car. Positive camber is when the top of the wheel leans out.

FRONT SUSPENSION TYPE

Double Wishbone (A-arms)

Frame

Wheel

Double Wishbone (A-arms)

Its got two control arm thats have A shape that

connected to the frame. Use to control arm equal length.

ADVANTAGES Increased negative camber wheel especially when take a corner. DISADVANTAGES

Expensive.

Can handle large deflection. Versatile. Can work both side, front and back car. Take longer time to work on.

MacPherson Strut

The spring is directly connects to the steering knuckle to the chassis and acts as a link in the suspension. It use a shock absorber strut and a coil spring to replace the upper control arm. The system is compact, efficient and adapts easily to front and rear applications.

ADVANTAGES Cheaper / lighter compare than double A-arms.

Great for four wheel drive (FWD) because the space for driveshaft.

Its narrower than double Aarms.

DISADVANTAGES Its taller than double A-arms because its take more vertical space. Small camber changes with body roll. No camber gain for cornering. Due to the strut mounted to the body. It must mount with the body design. The body is almost necessary for handling street/forces.

MULTI-LINK FRONT SUSPENSION

Allows each wheel on the same angle to move

vertically reacting to a bump in the road independently of each other. It helps to absorbs harshness in the road. The type of vehicle suspension design typically used in independent suspensions that using three or more lateral arms and one or more longitudinal arms.

REAR SUSPENSION TYPE

a. Coil Spring Live-Axle
Spring

The telescopic type shock absorber is attached to the axle

at the bottom and the chassis at the top. The coil spring is mounted between the axle housing and the body. It allows for a large amount of suspension travel and its commonly preferred for off-road vehicle application.

b. Strut Based Rear Suspension

It having one single component that attaching the rear

wheels. Its work to maximize tire performance as independents suspensions allow the tread to contact the road over a great surface area. To allow the tire to wear more evenly and extend life.

c. Multi-Link Rear Suspension

Using double wishbone because theyre easily

incorporated with ball joints. Uses several control arms to guide the wheel and it feature different types of multilink models.

REMOVING AND REPLACING SUSPENSION

Prior to loosening the strut chassis bolts, scribe

alignment marks on the strut bolts and the chassis.

With the top strut bolts and nuts removed, raise

the car to a working height. Remove the wheel assembly. The strut is accessible from the wheel well after the wheel is removed.

Remove the bolt that fastens the brake line or hose

to the strut assembly.

Remove the struts two steering knuckle bolts.

Support the steering knuckle with wire and

remove the strut assembly from the car.

Install the strut assembly into the proper type of

spring compressor.

Compress the spring until it is possible to safely

loosen the retaining bolts. Remove the old strut assembly from the spring and install the new strut.

Compress the spring to allow for reassembly and

tighten the retaining bolts.

Reinstall the strut assembly into the car. Make sure all bolts are properly tightened and in

the correct locations.

CONCLUSION
A vehicles suspension system is essential to how

comfortably it drives. Moreover, a suspension system is integral to a vehicles smooth handling. A suspension system that is maintained and serviced properly strikes just the right balance between two functions :
It will ride smoothly Handle optimally

On the other hand, a suspension system in ill repair may

lead to poor handling or an uncomfortable ride, neither of which makes for a pleasant driving experience. If we dont care about this suspension system, it will affect our vehicle and maybe we put our life and others in risk when we are on the road.
