ORIGIN OF THE WORD

The word adultery originates not from adult, as is commonly thought in English-speaking countries, but from the Late Latin word for to alter, corrupt: adulterare. Adulterare in turn is formed by the combination of ad (towards), and alter (other), together with the infinitive form are (making it a verb). Thus the meaning is literally to make other. In contrast, the word adult (meaning a person of mature years) comes from another Latin root, adolescere, meaning to grow up or mature: a combination of ad (towards), alere (to nourish, to grow), and the inchoative infix sc(meaning to enter into a state of).

WHAT IS ADULTERY?
also called philandery, anglicised from Latin adulterium) Is sexual intercourse between a married person and someone other than the spouse. Religious and legal interpretations of what constitutes adultery vary widely. The term adultery has an Abrahamic origin, though the concept predates Judaism and is found in many other societies. The definition and consequences vary between religions, cultures, and legal jurisdictions, but the concept is similar in Judaism, Christianity,Hinduism, and Islam.

3 types of adultery spoken of in the Bible

1. SEXUAL ADULTERY
Conjugal infidelity. An adulterer was a man who had sexual intercourse with a woman he was not married to, either a married woman or one who was engaged to be married. A woman who did the same thing was an adulteress. Adultery is fornication. The Bible regards adultery as a great sin and a great social wrong. 2. ADULTERY WITHOUT SEXUAL INTERCOURSE

The Bible speaks of wanton eyes (Isa. 3:16), eyes full ofadultery (2 Pet. 2:14), and the lust of the eyes (1 John 2:16). Jesus Christ warned, You have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery already with her in his heart. As with the breaking of any of the Ten Commandments, those who are not washed in the blood of Jesus Christ will have to pay the penalty. They will not enter the Kingdom of God. 3. SPIRITUAL ADULTERY
Idolatry, covetousness, and apostasy are spoken of as spiritual adultery (Jer. 3:6, 8-9; Ezek. 16:32; Hos. 1:2-3; Rev. 2:22). An apostate church is an adulteress (Isa. 1:21; Ezek. 23:4, 7, 37), and the Jews are described an adulterous generation (Matt. 12:39) (compare Rev. 12).

God created marriage at the beginning.

So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.

To leave your spouse for another person may be legal, but it is adultery in Gods eyes.

Punishments?
While adultery may not necessarily come with legal punishments, in some cultures it can result in social stigma. Some regions of the world also practice honor killing, in which the unfaithful spouse and the adulterer are killed. Other forms of punishment, such as throwing acid in the face of an adulterous spouse, have also been documented. More commonly, however, adultery ends in counseling, and the partners may explore the possibility of a divorce if they feel that they are no longer suited to each other.

What warning does the Bible give for committing adultery?

Proverbs 6:32:33, NKJV. "Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; he who does so destroys his own soul. Wounds and dishonor he will get, and his reproach will not be wiped away."

How can we avoid adultery?

Dont covet what you do not have, God is faithful to your needs. Its in the Bible, Hebrews 13:5, NKJV. Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.
