Impact of Cinema on Society Reformation or Deformation?

INDIAN CINEMA has virtually become a parallel culture. Talk of India with a foreigner and debate virtually centres around Indian films - Amitabh Bachhan

Is it not a folly to expect the faithful depiction of the society in the movie(s)?
To expect cinema to be realistic is just like expecting literary works to be like history books.

The theory of Imitation.

Poetry does not faithfully depict the reality, says Aristotle. There is no slavish imitation of reality But it is the addition of something more to reality, and this something more is the same reason for why we enjoy movies, which are sometimes just cinematography of lifesketches.

Why do we go to the cinema?

To see what we see everyday? We want something different from our usual, day-to-day life. We may feel it uninteresting if the same usual life of hero is depicted in the movies too. The new events, happenings and unusual things make us think in different way. People dont like it if everything in the movie is same as there is in their real life. It is a pleasure to see the hero doing things which we want to but can not. Even Songs.

The function of cinema

It is to delight and instruct. The prior function of any movie is to delight the audience and then to instruct, for movies are also taken as a form of literature. Indian Cinema acts as a prism to manifest Indian culture in the spectrum of all its hues and shades.
