Introduction:
Normal traffic light systems operate on timing mechanism that changes the lights after a given interval. Using intelligent traffic systems emergency vehicles will not spend unnecessary time waiting for the traffic lights to change. The 3 signals automatically falls red and green to ambulance by sending signal from ambulance to traffic light

Aim:
The main aim in designing the intelligent traffic signal system, consists of a computer or a system that controls the selection and timing of traffic lights movement using RF sensors. The main part is the detector or sensor, a device to indicate the presence of emergency vehicles.

Power Supply:
A device that supplies electrical energy to an output load is called a power supply unit or PSU. This power supply section is converts 230V AC signal to 5V DC signal and also to reduce the amplitude of the signal.

Micro Controller:
In this project we use AT89s52 microcontroller. It is a low power device and has more additional features than its competitive 89s51. It has

256 bites of RAM. 8KB ROM 3 timers

RF Module:
The RF module, as the name suggests, operates at Radio Frequency. RF range includes 3 KHz to 300 GHz. This operates even when there is any obstacle. This RF module comprises of an RF Transmitter and an RF Receiver. The transmitter /receiver (Tx /Rx) pair operates at a frequency of 434 MHz

RF Module:
The RF module is often used along with a pair of encoder/decoder. Here we use HT12E & HT12D as encoder and decoders respectively. The transmission occurs at the rate of 1Kbps - 10Kbps

RF Transmitter:
The RF transmitter is a 4 pin IC. It receives serial data and transmits it wirelessly through RF through its antenna connected at pin4. It uses ASK (Amplitude Shift Keying).

RF Receiver:
RF receiver is a 8 pin IC as shown in the following figure. It operates at the same frequency as that of the transmitter and thereby receives the transmitted data.

Buzzer:
A buzzer or beeper is a signaling device, usually electronic, typically used in automobiles, household appliances such as a microwave oven, or game shows. Here we use a buzzer to indicate the drivers of other vehicles the arrival of an emergency vehicle. This helps them not to confuse the sudden and odd change in the traffic signals.

Working:
When an ambulance arrives at a traffic junction the driver presses the button assigned to that side. Then the encoder encodes the serial data. It is being transmitted through the antenna in the transmitter. The receiver receives the signal and decoder decodes it.

Working:

Then the microcontroller aptly responds to the received signal, executes the program code and sends the command to the respective light in that direction. The green light glows till it receives second signal to stop glowing. Hence the ambulance easily passes through the traffic.

Advantages:

The advantage of using RF technology in the project is:

RF technology is very much beneficial compared to IR. It works for longer distance than IR. It operates even when there is an obstacle in its path i.e. no line of sight operation. It operates in single frequency, so no need for multiple modulations.

Disadvantages:

The major disadvantage in using RF technology is:

As we use same frequency for all RF modules i.e. 434 MHz, there should be no other RF switched on in that location. It is costly compared to IR.

Applications:

This is useful in:

Emergency cases to pass through the traffic. Where automated traffic signal is used . In cities where the traffic is high. In places where there is no separate lane for emergency vehicles.

Conclusion:
Hence we came out with a project to solve the traffic problems faced by the emergency vehicles. This is very useful in developing countries where traffic rules are not effectively followed. This project is easy to install and of less cost.
