What is Virus?
A virus is a small piece of software that piggybacks on real programs in order to get executed Once its running, it spreads by inserting copies of itself into other executable code or documents

What is worm?
Worm is a self-replicating program, similar to a computer virus. A virus attaches itself to, and becomes part of, another executable program. however, a worm is self-contained and does not need to be part of another program to propagate itself.

Trojan horse?
A Trojan horse is a standalone malicious file or program that does not attempt to inject itself into other files. Trojan horses can make copies of themselves, steal information, or harm their host computer systems

Malware?

Malware, malicious software, is software to help hackers disrupt users computer operation, gather sensitive information, or gain unauthorized access to a computer system.

Spyware?

Spyware is a type of malware (malicious software) installed on computers that collects information about users without their knowledge. The presence of spyware is typically hidden from the user and can be difficult to detect. Spyware is often secretly installed on a user's personal computer without their knowledge

Simple Steps to Protect Your PC By taking four basic steps, you can help secure your personal computer from many malicious software attacks Those four simple steps are: Use an Internet firewall Keep your operating system up to date, preferably by using automatic update features in Windows Install and maintain antivirus software Install and maintain antispyware software

PROTECTION AGAINST VIRUSES

Computer viruses are no longer something you hear about but no one ever gets. They are real and can circle the globe in a matter of hours. To help prevent your computer against Viruses infection: Run a reliable anti-virus program. Norton Antivirus & MacAfee Antivirus are excellent programs. Stanford Provides the latest versions of Norton for free download on the essential software download page (ess.stanford.edu) Configure your Antivirus program to scan for viruses at least once a week. This will require you to create a new scheduled scan and will differ slightly for each Antivirus program. Configure your Antivirus program to automatically download the latest virus definitions. Delete, and do not open any emails or attachments from unknown sources.

PROTECTION AGAINST HACKERS

Unfortunately hacking has become a real concern in todays society. Last year at least 4 students on campus had their hard disks erased after at the hands of hackers. To protect your computer against hackers here are a few things you can do:

Junk email, we all get it, but how do you stop it Well the answer is you dont. Once youre on a list, its virtually impossible to get yourself off. But you can prevent yourself from getting on the list in the first place. Heres how:
Delete spam as soon as you receive it, dont reply to the message in an attempt to get yourself removed. When you reply it lets them know that there is a real person on the other end and that their advertisement is reaching people. Set your cookie security level. For PCs run IE 6 and set your cookie privacy to medium high Do not install shareware, nothing in this world is truly free, shareware is loaded with spyware that tracks your internet usage and sends you targeted advertising! Download and install a spyware removal tool such as:

Grayware Grayware encompasses spyware, adware, dialers, joke programs, remote access tools, and any other unwelcome files and programs apart from viruses that can harm the performance of computers on your network. Grayware refers to applications or files that are not classified as viruses or Trojan horse programs, but can still negatively affect the performance of the computers on your network and introduce significant security risks to your organization. Adware - software that displays advertising banners, re-directs you to websites, and otherwise conducts advertising on your computer (not to be confused with popup ads, which come from the websites that you visit).
Malware - malicious software that is intended to do harm to your computer or software, including viruses, Trojans, and worms. Spyware - software that gathers information about you, your browsing and Internet usage habits, as well as other data.

BIOS = Basic Input /Output System which dictates how the computer is configured. crashes = use generally to mean that the computer has locked up and you lost your work. Technically it sometimes means that the hard drive is damaged. freezes = program has ceased to respond to keyboard or mouse input hangs = same as freezes lockup = same as freezes
