Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are said to be the first teachers while Veda Vyasa, the author

of Mahabharata, is said to be the first human teacher. This is the reason his birth day is celebrated in remembrance of Gurus (Vyasa Purnima is called Guru Purnima).

Some of those challenging trials were: eating only a single ball of tasteless food each day, sitting in cold water during winter, abstaining from all forms of food tastes (Khattaa), to walk barefoot, to refrain from using any means of transport, like bullock cart, etc, to abstain from talking while eating, to engage in doing Bhajan, to abstain from further sleep once one has got up, to be fearless on seeing ghosts, thieves or a lion; to eat raw, uncooked grains, etc. Some of these trials lasted for months and still the Paramhans did not flinch or resign from the Lord's word.

A line, about Rishi Vashisht. Rishi Vashisht is one of the Sapta Rishis (Seven Sages) Vasishta, Agasthya, Kaushika, Sukara, Narada and others. Rishi Vashisht is son of Brahma, the creator. One day, Ashtavakra decided to show the others how Janakas devotion to learning, was far superior than theirs. As Janaka walked in late one day, Ashtavakra started the lecture saying that he was seeing a vision of Mithila (the capital city where Janaka was ruling) going down in flames that very moment, due to a random fire. After hearing this, all the other disciples panicked and rushed back home to protect their possessions and their families. On the other hand, Janaka, calmly came and sat down for the lecture. When Ashtavakra questioned him as to why he did not run to protect his belongings from his palace, he said The only thing that is worth protecting and preserving is learning. Everything else is just material illusion.

Shishya: Arjuna , where Krishna is both a friend and a Guru for Arjuna in Mahabaratha. Bhagavad Gita is the holy script which is essentially teachings of Krishna to his Shishya Arjuna.

Guru: Vyasa had five disciples: Vaishampayana, Jaimini, Paila, Sumantu and his own son Shuka. After completing the study of the Mahabharata, they published their own versions of the epic, (Adi Parva, 1.1.63, 1.57.73-75) perhaps on Vyasas instructions. The legend goes that Vyasa trashed them all except the one written by Vaishampayana and one Parvathe Ashvamedhaparvaby Jaimini.

Pt. Birju Maharaj is from a family of noted exponents, Jagannath Maharaj, also known as Acchan Maharaj of Lucknow Gharana, served as court dancer in Raigarh princely state. Pt.
