Around the Earth Up To GEO
James E. D. Cline
Exploring both the technological feasibility,
and the potential impact on civilization, of a
nontether, kinetic energy supported, electrical
lift rail system operating between ground and
GEO

The intent here is to provide a conceptual
outline for an alternate, very positive, near
future pathway into space for civilization
• Provide transportation technological basis
• Use the electrodynamic interactions in
synchronous electric motor technology
• Would allow construction of Satellite
Solar Power Stations finally in GEO
• Allow massspectrometer type total
recycling in GEO; Spaceports in GEO

Conceptual complexity vs.
physical size
• The common CD/DVD drive in today’s
computers and music systems has a similar
basic conceptual complexity
• Both utilize datacontrolled synchronous
rotary and linear electric motor principles
• But the Space Carousel would have much
greater 131,300 Km perimeter

A sliding mass within a curved
track structure exerts an
outward force on the track

Similarly, mass sliding in a curved track entirely
around the earth produces an outward force opposite
to the force of gravity, supporting track’s weight

The velocity of the sliding mass is chosen to be
slightly greater than that needed to just offset the
weight of the track, its tubing and loads

Also, the outertrack spacecraft are being lifted up
along the structure by loosely dragging against the
upwardmoving mass sliding on the inner track.

So the structural weight support is primarily a rotary
electrical motor function, and the lift of captive
spacecraft is a servoed linear motor function

Electrical power is input to the synchronous mass
drivers at the earth terminal site, there converted into
kinetic energy of the sliding armature mass streams.

That kinetic energy is thus distributed throughout the
structure, and in turn can be electromagnetically
tapped into anywhere, for lifting or servopositioning.

The sliding armature mass streams are in contra
rotating paired sets to balance gyroscopic
precession, and flow in a cycloid path as the earth
rotates. Copyright 2005 © James E. D. Cline.

Within the atmosphere, the tubing protects the
meteoric velocity armature mass streams from
contact with the air.

Next Steps: A new field of transportation technology
is proposed to be created
• Develop mathematical modeling of the overall
transportation system electromechanical dynamics
• R&D on the basic armature mass stream technique for
synchronously transferring energy and momentum along
inductive magnetic levitation tracks in a hard vacuum at
Km/s velocities
• A side project to use wet-launch technology to put a
prototype 200-person toroidal rotating habitat in LEO
• Prepare for practice with earth-encircling emplacement
techniques
• Explore ways to deal with current lack of acceptance by
the present business system.
