An Introduction

DEFINITION OF RESEARCH
According to Aquino (1970) Research is simply, the systematic search for pertinent information on specific topic of problem.

DEFINITION OF RESEARCH
According to Good and Scates (1972) Research is a careful, critical, disciplined inquiry, varying in technique and method according to the nature and conditions of the problem identified, directed toward the clarification or resolution (or both) of the problem.

DEFINITION OF RESEARCH
According to Halpin (1996) Research is the process of gathering data of information to solve a particular or specific problem in scientific manner.

DEFINITION OF RESEARCH
According to Quinton (2006) Research in its broadest sense is an attempt to gain solutions to problems. More precisely, it is the collection of data in a rigorously controlled situation for the purpose of prediction or explanation.

DEFINITION OF RESEARCH
According to Adanza, Beermudo and Rasonabe (2009)

Research (in simplest definition) is looking for an answer to a query using the most logical and valid methods.

PURPOSES OF RESEARCH
MAIN PURPOSE

The main purpose of research is to serve man (Good, 1972).

PURPOSES OF RESEARCH
MAIN GOALS

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

To satisfy mans craving for more understanding; To improve his judgment; To reduce the burden of work; To relieve suffering; and To increase satisfactions in multitudinous ways.

PURPOSES OF RESEARCH
SPECIFIC PURPOSES & GOALS
1. To discover new facts about known phenomena; To find answers to problems which are only partially solved by existing methods and information; To improve existing techniques and develop new instruments/products; and To expand and verify existing knowledge.

2.
3. 4.

Characteristics of Good Research

Systematic Controlled Empirical Analytical Objective, unbiased, and logic Employs quantitative or statistical methods. Employs hypothesis

Characteristics of Good Research

Original work Done by expert Accurate investigation, observation and description Patient and unhurried activity Requires an effort-making capacity Requires courage

Differences between Research and Problem Solving

RESEARCHThere may not be a problem, only interest in answering a question or a query

PROBLEM-SOLVING: There is always a problem to solve.

Differences between Research and Problem Solving

RESEARCHMore rigorous and broader scope.

PROBLEM-SOLVING: A problem to be solved is less broad.

Differences between Research and Problem Solving

RESEARCH-

The research problem is NOT necessarily defined specifically.

PROBLEM-SOLVING: A problem to be solved has to defined specifically and identified definitely.

Differences between Research and Problem Solving

RESEARCH-

All research is intended to solve some kind of problem, but this is not the primary aim.
PROBLEM-SOLVING: Problem solving does not always involve research.

Differences between Research and Problem Solving

RESEARCHIt is conducted not primarily to solve a problem but to make a contribution to general knowledge.

PROBLEM-SOLVING: It is always intended to solve a problem.

Differences between Research and Problem Solving

RESEARCHIt is concerned with broad problem with defining and outlining the properties of phenomena.

PROBLEM-SOLVING: Concerned with specific problem and once the problem is solved that is the end.
