Leadership Styles

What is a Leader?

A Leader is someone in authority to lead others to accomplish a goal(s). A leader needs to be able to motivate others to accomplish a goal(s) while at the same time encourage others to work toward their own professional goals.

Leadership styles
Autocratic leadership Bureaucratic leadership Charismatic leadership Democratic leadership or participative leadership Laissez-faire leadership

Autocratic leadership
In autocratic leadership , a leader exerts high levels of power over his or her employees or team members. People within the team are given few opportunities for making suggestions.

Autocratic leadership usually leads to high levels of absenteeism and staff turnover. Generally, this style is not a good way to get the best performance from a team.

Democratic leadership or participative leadership

The leader involves one or more employees in the decision making process (to determine what to do and how to do it). Leader maintains the final decision making authority.

Allows everyone to be part of a teameveryone feels that they have participated and contributed.
Encourages participation, delegates wisely, values group discussion. Motivates by empowering members to direct themselves

Laissez-faire leadership

Delegative or Free Reign Leader allows employees to make the decisions. Leader is still responsible for the decisions. Employees analyze the situation and determine what needs to be done and how to do it. Leader sets priorities and delegates. Leader has little control. Team has little direction or motivation.

Bureaucratic leadership
Bureaucratic leaders work by the book, ensuring that their staff follow procedures exactly. This is a very appropriate style for work involving serious safety risks or where large sums of money are involved.

Charismatic leadership
In this the leader injects huge doses of enthusiasm into his or her team, and is very energetic in driving others forward. A charismatic leader can tend to believe more in him or herself than in their team. The charismatic leadership carries great responsibility, and needs long-term commitment from the leader.

Leadership development
Leadership development refers to any activity that enhances the quality of leadership within an individual or organization leadership development has focused on developing the leadership abilities and attitudes of individuals.

This will include the interpersonal relationships, social influence process, and the team dynamics between the leader and his/her team
