Biomass / Waste to Energy

Pakistan is an agricultural country, more than 70% of the population is involved in agriculture and it accounts for more than 35% of the GDP Pakistan is rich in Biogas potential. Having more than 57 million of cattle animals and a potential of more than 21.38 million M3 gas daily, the technology provides nearly three times more useful energy than that dung directly burnt, and also produces nutrientrich manure.

Biogas Power Generation Project

A PPA has been signed between M/s Shakarganj Mills Limited (sugar mill) & local power distribution company (FESCO) through AEDB for producing 8 MW electricity through biogas using molasses in April 2008 and is being distributed to national grid. A New Zealand based firm M/s Clean Energy Development Ltd is working with AEDB for a biogas project at Landhi, Karachi. Waste from 400,000 cattle in the area would be utilized to generate electricity and high grade organic fertilizer. The pilot phase of the project (250 kW) has been initiated and the full scale plant will generate up to 50 MW of electricity and 1500 tons of organic fertilizer per day. Installation of commercial biogas plants of capacity 50 cubic meter to 500 cubic meter at cattle and poultry farms in different cities is also under consideration.
