Introduction
Surveys reveal remarkable similarities in workplace preferences between Baby Boomers and Generation Y. Boomers and Gen Ys want to contribute to society through their labour ; seek flexible working arrangements; value social connections at work and loyalty to a company; and prize other rewards of employment over monetary compensation.

Their workplace demands have significant practical implications for how employers should design work environments to attract and keep talent.

The big Shift

Big shift in the composition of the workforce. Each of Gen Y and baby boomers are twice the size of the Gen X. Their sheer numbers is forcing organisations to reconsider their employee policies. Remixed set of rewards: Flexible work arrangements and the opportunity to give back to society trump the sheer size of the pay package

Like Boomer, Like Y

47% Gen Y believes the company they work for offer should sabbatical leaves and 29% of Boomers report having taken time out. Both believes its important that their work involve giving back. Gen Ys (89%) and Boomers (87%) say that having flexible work options is important. Both generations rate four other forms of pay as at least as important as money.

The New Workplace Imperatives

Modularity-The kind of chunking of work that allows boomers to scale back their hours and breadth of control but still tackle the sophisticated tasks that their years of experience equip them to handle. Flexibility-People are held accountable for results, not the particular hours they keep at the office. Opportunities to give back-Many companies support many social causes. Progressive policies- people become more concerned about global climate change , many companies have discovered that a progressive work environment is deeply appreciated.

Intergenerational mentoring-Informal mentoring is running both ways. Both groups are learning from the cross-pollination.

The new Challenge

As Baby Boomers slowly step out of full-time posts, Gen X will take on the highest executive roles, the generation in charge will need to manage a workforce it is fundamentally out of step with. The organizations that thrive will be those that recognize their peoples shifting values and preferences and that find ways to make the work meaningful on those terms.
