Morning Meeting
Responsive Classroom based
Helps students feel welcomed and part of a community Pass a greeting and complete either sharing or energizing activity that will help build our classroom community.

Calendar Math
A series of activities that helps establish mental math. This program starts our small and builds onto to the basic calendar
Right now we are covering:
Date Using a 100s chart Odd & even patterns Plane shapes multiples (skip counting) money Time & temperature coming soon.

Math
Using Investigation
Key to have students explain their thinking Use academic key vocabulary Develop problem solving strategies Number sense is weak so I am working intensely on helping students develop their understandings

Ways to help with math at home


Talk about math Play mental math challenges and discuss how you are solving a problem in your head. Play math games I send home. They dont take too much time about 10 minutes Review material I send home and let me know if your child is frustrated or confused.

Content
Science & Social studies may be included during this time. Especially if it includes a mathematical component.
Some examples:
Geography (social Studies) Matter & measurement (science)

Recess
We have a 20 minute break at 10:40 11:00

Lunch
11:00 11:30 This is open seating children can choose who they sit with and where in our half of the lunchroom.

Reading Word Study Writing

Reading
Biggest push is on comprehension strategies. Making connection with the material read.

A Reading Night is in the planning stages for an evening in October

Word Study
Within Word
Students looking at long vowel patterns Students working on complex consonant compounds

Syllable Juncture
Students working on the patterns found when syllables are joined Variation in endings with various syllables Looking at beginning and ending sound patterns.

Writing
Becoming a writer based on great books students will analysis other writers and compare this work to their own writing.
Paragraph writing Story writing Non-fiction / report writing Speech writing

Content will also be included in L.A.


It is a natural inclusion to have science and social study topics be included in Reading & writing instruction. Learning how to read non-fiction material will be a big focus this year. Students are learning from reading not just learning to read.
