A living inspiration for todays woman, Chanda Kochhar is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ICICI Bank, Indias largest private and overall second largest bank in the country. She also heads the Corporate Centre of ICICI Bank.

INTRODUCTION
Chanda kochhar was born on November 17, 1961 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree from Jai Hind College, Mumbai. Later, she earned a Masters in Management Studies (Finance) from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai and is a Cost Accountant from the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India. She was awarded the Wockhardt Gold Medal for Excellence in Management Studies. She won the J.N Bose gold medal for Cost Accountancy.

CAREER
Chanda Kochhar joined ICICI as a Management trainee after her Masters in the year 1984. After 9 years of hard work, Kochhar was appointed as part of core team to set the ICICI bank. In 1993 when ICICI decided to enter commercial banking, she was deputed to ICICI Bank as a part of the core team to set up the bank. She got promotion in 1994 & 1996 as Assistant General Manager and then Deputy General Manager respectively. In 1998, she was promoted as the General Manager with role of handling relationships with ICICI`s top 200 clients.

In July 2000, she was chosen to head the Retail Finance division of ICICI and has been instrumental in scaling up the business. In April 2001, she was promoted as Executive Director, heading the retail business in ICICI Bank. In April 2006, Chanda Kochhar was appointed as Deputy Managing Director of ICICI Bank with responsibility for both Corporate and Retail banking business of ICICI Bank from October 2006 to October 2007.

In October 2007, she was appointed as the Joint Managing Director & CFO. She was also the official spokesperson for ICICI Bank.

CHANGES MADE BY HER:


The organization has grown and evolved substantially in these last 20 years. ICICI transformed itself from a corporate bank into a retail bank, and now a universal bank.

She was also one of the bankers who came up with electronic banking and installed 2000 ATM machines all over India.
Under Kochhar's leadership, ICICI was awarded the 'Best Retail Bank in India' in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005. In 2002, the bank was given the 'Excellence in Retail Banking Award'.

Focus on work done rather than work achieved. Additional perspectives were not addressed. Retail strategy required service focus.

She served as an Independent Director of Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd., from November 11,2008 to June 24, 2009.

Chanda Kochhar also held the positions of Vice-Chairperson of ICICI Bank UK and ICICI Bank Canada and the position of Director of ICICI International Limited and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Limited. In May 2009, she was appointed as the Managing Director and the Chief Operating Officer of ICICI bank for a term of five years.

LEGACY
