Accountability

is a form of trust worthiness ;the trait of being answerable to someone for something, or being responsible for ones conduct . (Farley)

The ability and willingness to assume responsibility for ones actions and accepting the consequences of one's behaviour. ( Kozier, Erg)

The nurse is accountable for keeping current and competent technical skills and knowledge needed to perform nursing care.

The nursing profession is exercising its accountability toward formulating its own policy and control its activities . The standards for licensure and certification is through professional groups and associations such as

Quality Assurance & Quality Improvement Programs. professional nursing organizations.

profession exists to provide service to the client and the nurse must know the importance of documenting her work and the process .

nursing care Allow clients to participate in nursing care activities, including planning. Respect individual client differences Serve as a client advocate when the need arises

The

client has the right to receive the best possible quality of care . Care grounded in a firm knowledge base .

And

New concerns have recently arise regarding accountability to the employer and it comes about because of large and growing number of nurses employed by nursing agencies and is rented to hospitals .

The individual nurse must understand the necessity of being aware of and accountable not only for her own actions but also for coarse of her collegues' .

The

nurse must be the one accountable to herself for her own actions .

The nurses accountability to herself is obvious .she must be the one responsible for her own mental and physical health for assuring that she keeps all aspects of her life in balance.

The

nurses accountability to herself includes refusing to work in situations that she considers unsafe.

Use

of professional standards in nursing practice Be true to oneself Take care of personal, physical , mental and spiritual health needs. Protect self from harm.

Accountability

to self also involves acknowledging her limitations and knowing when she is in need of further education in order to more fully and truly perform her role.

The

nurse is accountable to herself to do her own personal.Government is in aid or hinder the nurses ability to do her rest through legislation,funding of education and research ,reimbursement policies and health care priorities.

Research

One of the major factors in the accelerating pace of nursing movement toward professional status is the growth of its theoretical and conceptual base for practice. Theory based knowledge is increased as a result of nursing research.

The

leadership ability is one of the most important areas in laying the groundwork for the accountability.

Higher

education Higher education and educational experience should provide opportunities for the student to take responsibility and exercise accountability.

Am

I providing the best care of which I am capable? Is that care sufficient to meet the needs of the client in this situation.? Am I acting in accordance with my own ethical code and that of the profession? Have I given the client information that he wants or needs to know about his health status, while considering this knowledge effect on him?

Am

I seeking to improve health and nursing care? Am I speaking out against abuses I see in health and nursing care? Am I acting as a community resource in the areas of health and nursing? Am I attempting to increase the knowledge of the public to enable it to make more knowledgeable choices about health and nursing care?

Am

I fulfilling my professional role in accordance with the requirements of the profession? Are other nurses in my setting doing the same? Am I complying with the ethical code of the profession?

Am

I satisfied with my chosen profession? Am I performing my professional role in the best way I can? Should I seek further preparation for that role? Am I comfortable , ethically, with the way in which I am performing my professional role?

Am

I performing in accordance with the job description for the position for which I was employed? If I am not satisfied with that job description, am I seeking appropriate ways to change it? Am I working in accordance with the policies and procedures of the institution?

Effective

nursing care will be measured by patient outcomes . Quality improvement in nursing care . Nurse must be able to show the evidence that the care they provides makes a demonstratable difference in patient outcomes . Future professional nurses require advanced degrees in practice.
