HISTORY OF TIN PLATE

The tinning came from Whitesmiths practice of Tinning ironware to protect it against rust is an ancient one. Tinplate was apparently produced in the 1620s at a mill of (or under the patronage of) the Earl of Southampton. The first production of tinplate was probably in Bohemia, from where the trade spread to Saxony, and was well-established there by the 1660s.

In the late 18th century, Napoleons army, which had suffered more from malnutrition than by actual combat, offered 12,000 francs, to anyone who could develop a way to preserve food for the military on the battlefield. A French confectioner, Nicolas Appert, after 15 years of research, took home the prize in 1809. (BUT HOW?)

He discovered that the application of heat to food in sealed Tin Cans preserved the food from deterioration.

CONTD HISTORY
Based on Nicholas Apperts method of food preservation the packaging of food in sealed airtight tinplated wrought-iron cans was first patented by an Englishman, Peter Durand, in 1810. Beginning 1814, canned foods were sent to distant British colonies and were greatly favoured. Demand of tin cans grew exponentially during World War-II
