Social Media......huh???
Social - An informal gathering or organized
interaction of persons forming groups.

Media - Media is an instrument of communication,


like a newspaper or a radio.

So, Social Media can be termed as an organized and interactive instrument of communication.

#Fact - Over 50% of the worlds population is under 30-years-old. 96% of them
have joined a social network

Oh...ok....and???
Much more than just people sharing ideas and thoughts. It is the creation and exchange of User Generated Content. Information is spread out so fast and widely that it puts television, radio and print media to shame.

Ability to transform broadcast media monologues into social media dialogues. Interaction can be as simple as asking for your comments or letting you vote on an article, or it can be as complex as recommending movies to you based on the ratings of other people with similar interests.

Social networking began in the form of generalized online communities such as Theglobe.com (1994), Geocities (1994) and Tripod.com (1995). Chat rooms and free or inexpensive personal webspace were used to encourage sharing of ideas and information.

The newer generation of social networking sites began to flourish with the emergence of Friendster in 2002. Friendster was followed by MySpace and LinkedIn a year later, and finally, Bebo.

Facebook, launched in 2004, has since become the largest social networking site in the world.

Emerging trends like Real time content (Live-feed), Location based activities (geo-tagging) and third party application integration. Companies and businesses build their brand image with social media. Science communities use social media to exchange information and knowledge which would not be possible within a self-contained hierarchical organization. Teachers and professors make use of this medium to extend classroom discussion, post assignments, for tests and quizzes, to assist with homework and to foster teacher-parent communication.

#Fact - Facebook users in India are growing at 14.1%, which is more than any
of the other big countries on Facebook.

Whoa!...companies??...really?
Companies use social media for brand building. Use the medium as an online reputation management tool. Social media is also used for recruiting new talent. It is also used to learn about new technologies and competitors. Social media is used as a lead generation tool to intercept potential prospects. Provide support to customers using social media.

Mainly to build relationships with consumers.


Use it as a cost effective mechanism for marketing through the word of mouth.

#Fact - There are over 200,000,000 Blogs. 34% of bloggers post opinions about
products & brands.

Facebook
Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg as Facemash in 2003, and subsequently thefacebook, while attending Harvard. On October 24, 2007, Microsoft announced that it had purchased a 1.6% share of Facebook for $240 million including the rights to place international ads. Facebooks revenue comes from this advertising. Traffic to Facebook has increased exponentially since 2009. More people visit Facebook than Google, according to a study. Users can create profiles with photos, lists of personal interests, contact information and other personal information. There are more than 500 million active users on facebook. Facebook now tops Google for weekly traffic in the U.S.

Twitter
Twitter was created after a long brainstorming session by the board members of the podcasting company Odeo. It was inspired by SMS group messaging. It is a micro-blogging service, enabling its users to send and read other users' messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's profile page.

Blogs

Blog is a blend of web and log, a website with regular commentaries, event description or other material. Blogs can be anything we want; a personal diary, a daily pulpit, a collaborative space, a political soapbox, a breaking-news outlet or a review of a product.

300,000 new users every day.

Apollo Hospitals
Apollo hospitals uses you-tube to advertise its services in an engaging and novel manner. It uploads videos about its procedures and patient experiences It also has joined Twitter, has a Facebook group, del.icio.us account and several blogs.

Meter Jam

Started by three advertising professionals to protest against taxi and auto drivers who refuse fares.
It became a well known event on Aug 12, 2010 and had atleast 40,000 people across India refuse rides. Although not 100% successful, it prompted the Home minister and the State Transport department to take action against and fine the errant drivers. Around 800 drivers in Mumbai were fined since then.

Case-mate

A 22 year old Case-mate marketing guy suggested selling a cardboard iPhone recessioncase for 99 cents. The idea was posted as an article by blogger, Larry Greenberg through twitter. Search rankings for Case-mate leveraged. Their daily site traffic record was broken by 5 times!!. Casemate sold 7,000 recession-cases in 4 days!!.

Politics

During Barack Obamas rise to the White House, he garnered 5 million fans on social media. 5.4 million Americans clicked on an I voted for Obama Facebook button, resulting in 3 million online donors contributing $500 million in fundraising. An astounding 92% of the donations were in increments of less than $100.

#Fact - Every minute, 24 hours of video is uploaded on You -Tube.

I'm a believer!!

Because of the speed in which social media enables communication, word of mouth now becomes world of mouth. In the near future we will no longer search for products and services they will find us via social media. Successful companies in social media act more like party planners, aggregators, and content providers than traditional advertisers.

Companies in social media have a humane side to them. They are more social beings than entities.

The Return on Investment (ROI) of social media is that your business will still exist in 5 years.
Social media isnt a fad, its a fundamental shift in the way we communicate.
