Ghosts Vampires Werewolves Demons Monsters Zombies Cannibals Serial Killers Due to these elements, horror films may overlap with other genres such as fantasy, supernatural, sci-fi and thriller.

Rooted from literature, like books by Mary Shelley (Frankenstein), Bram Stoker (Dracula), and Edgar Allan Poe. Films started with silent shorts pioneered by George Mlis. Credited as the first horror film was his La Manoir du diable (Manor of the Devil) in 1896

Films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919) and Nosferatu (1922), the first vampire film, began the horror genre Rebirth of horror films in 1930s when sounds were added to films. Released were films like Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), and King Kong (1933).

Horror films of the 50s were inspired mostly by events during that decade, like the Cold War that fed fears of invasion (The Blob)

60s horror films reflected the social revolution in that decade, like films that tackled violence (Blood Feast) and sexuality (Repulsion). Famous from this decade are the precursor slasher films, Alfred Hitchcocks Psycho and Michael Powells Peeping Tom.

70s horror films also focused on thens social issues from sexism (The Stepford Wives), religion (The Wicker Man), and war (Deathdream). Exploitation movies also began, like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre that involved a lot of violence and Vampyros Lesbos that involved graphic sex.

80s horror films were on the first half slasher films like Nightmare on Elm Street, while the latter was a lighthearted look at the genre with films like The Return of the Living Dead. Stephen King was a name famous in that decade with film adaptations of his

The 90s saw largescale funded horror films like The Silence of the Lambs, The Sixth Sense, and The Blair Witch Project.

The 2000s were mostly remakes of films (The Ring, The Grudge, Halloween). The decade also saw the beginnings of torture porn like in the Saw movies.

SUB-GENRES

Comedy-horror
Combines comedy with traditional horror movie themes and characters Because of this, comedy-horror films can also be considered black comedy Examples: Beetlejuice, Zombieland

Teen-horror
Horror film that revolves around a teenager or a group of teenagers Usually play upon traditional teenage issues, like dating and prom, and turn them into suspenseful and thrilling situations Examples: Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer

Monster-horror
Horror film that centers on the struggle between a monster or monsters and human beings The monster is usually the villain Examples: Aliens, Godzilla, Nosferatu

Slasher
Horror film that revolves around a psychopathic killer Violence is what sets this sub-genre apart from other sub-genres of horror Examples: Final Destination, Friday the 13th, Halloween

Supernatural-horror
Horror film that includes ghosts, demons, vampires, or other depiction of supernatural occurrences Unlike Religious Thrillers, they are not limited to religious elemets

Examples: The Exorcist, The Ring, The Omen

Zombie-horror
Horror film that includes zombies, mindless creatures often human beings risen from the dead Examples: Night of the Living Dead, 28 Days Later

PHILIPPINE HORROR GENRE

Halimaw, considered as the first horror movie in the Philippines

Pinoy horror films contain elements from our folklore, like the manananggal and aswang. Some celebrities have a number of roles in this genre, like Kris Aquino (Feng Shui, Sukob, Dalaw), Judy Ann Santos (Mag-ingat ka sa Kulam, Ouija) and Lovi Poe (Guni-Guni, Aswang, Tiktik).
