DESIGN OF ROOF SLAB

Design Parameters
Size

of room: 5.0m x 6.5m Grade of concrete, fck 25 N/mm2 Grade of steel, fy 500 N/mm2

1.Calculation of Effective Depth:

As per clause 23.2.1 of IS456-2000 Basic values of span to effective depth ratios for span up to 10meters. For continuous slabs Span/effective depth=26

Effective span
As per IS 456-2000,CLAUSE. 22.2 Least of Clear span + effective depth (or) Centre to centre distance between the supports

ASPECT RATIO - ly /lx

If

(ly/ lx) > 2, the slab is to be designed as one way slab. If (ly/ lx) <2, the slab is to be designed as two way slab. Aspect ratio (ly/ lx) < 2 Hence the slab is designed as two way slab.

Design Loads
Self

weight of slab Live load As per IS-875 part 2, assuming access is provided =1.5 KN/m2 Floor finish as per IS-875 part 1

Calculation of bending moment and check for depth

As per IS 456:2000 / Annex D.1.1, Mx = x Wu lx2 My = Y Wu lx2 From Table 26 of IS 456-2000, bending moment coefficient for two way restrained slabs Based on aspect ratio a) Moment along shorter span Mx = x Wu lx2

b) Moment along longer span My = Y Wu lx2

Check for Ast

As per IS 456:2000 / Cl 26.5.2.1, for HYSD BARS (Fe 500)

Minimum Ast =0.12% of (b x D)

Spacing should be the least of

Torsional Reinforcement

As per IS 456:2000 / Annex D/ D.1.8, Size of mesh = lx/5

1) At corners contained by two discontinuous edges

Area of torsional steel AT =3/4 of Ast required for maximum +ve moment 2) at corners contained by one discontinuous and one continuous edge Area of torsional steel AT =3/8 of Ast required for maximum +ve moment
3) at corners contained by both continuous edge Area of torsional steel AT =0

Check for shear

Shear force, Vu =Wu lx/2

As per IS 456:2000 / Cl 40.1, Nominal shear stress, v = Vu / bd As per IS 456:2000 / Table 20, Maximum shear stress for M25 cmax = 3.1 N/mm2 v< cmax As per IS 456:2000 / Table 20, Based on 100 As /(b x d) and grade of concrete Permissible shear strength in concrete c If v < c The slab is safe in shear
