Introduction
International studies indicate that India needs much larger per capita energy consumption to provide better living conditions to its citizens. Role of energy management and conservation is substantial. Planning commission of India has estimated that India has conservation potential at 23% of the total commercial energy generated in the country.

India's energy requirement comes from five sectors; agriculture, industry, transport, services and domestic, each having considerable saving potential. For example, energy costs amount to 20 percent of the total production cost of steel in India which is much higher than the international standards. Similarly the energy intensity per unit of food grain production in India is 3 4 times higher than that in Japan.

Energy Management
Energy management is a process that not only manages the energy production from different energy harvesting resources (solar, nuclear, fossil fuel) but also concerns optimal utilization at the consumer devices.

Objective: To minimize energy costs / waste without affecting production, comfort and quality. To minimize the environmental effects. To achieve and maintain optimum energy procurement and utilization, throughout the organization.

Energy Conservation
Energy Conservation is the deliberate practice or an attempt to save electricity, fuel oil or gas or any other combustible material, to be able to put to additional use by without spending any additional resources or money However, if we look at the predicted future human population figures and consider the probability that the individual life expectation will increase, we see that energy could, in the future, be in short supply.

Barriers to Energy Conservation: While there is considerable scope for energy conservation in our country, there also exist many barriers to it. For example Psycho - social (people do not like to change: social taboos and traditions), Economic (replacement is often costly).

Insight on Energy Management

Why do you need an Energy Manager

The energy manager provides leadership in the development of policy on energy management action plan and plays a key role in the formulation of corporate energy policy. He also prepares the information to be submitted to the designated agency with regard to the energy consumed and action taken on the recommendation of the accredited energy auditor.

Energy Manager Roles & Responsibilities

Formulation of Energy Management Policy Statement and Dissemination
Establish an energy conservation cell & prepare an annual activity plan Develop and manage training programme for energy efficiency at operating levels

Develop integrated system of energy efficiency and environmental improvement Create knowledge bank on sectoral, national and international development on energy efficiency technology and management system and information dissemination. Initiate activities to improve monitoring and process control to reduce energy costs

Co-ordinate implementation of energy audit/efficiency improvement projects through external agencies Establish / participate in information exchange with other energy managers of the same sector through association

Prepare a scheme for efficient use of energy and its conservation and implement such scheme keeping in view the economic stability of the investment in such form and manner as may be provided in the regulations of the Energy Conservation Act Provide information to BEE and Designated Agency of the respective States as demanded in the Act

Summary
We are entering a time when energy management is becoming immensely complex. Organizations are facing rising commodity prices, changing regulations, new consumer demands, climate changes and increased pressure from investors Energy managers must be able to drive energy cost reduction, be knowledgeable on a range of volatile risks and their effects on operations across multiple sites, and stay up-to-date on new and emerging technologies.
