Documentary Treatment

Gervaise Lynch
Intentions
In my documentary I am to find out why illegal music
downloading is so negative. I also aim to find why this
answer has a damaging impact both financially and
politically. Once I do this I am to investigate how illegally
downloading music affects the music industry. All of these
factors are to educate, inform and entertain my target
audience.
I will research these answers by featuring certain
conventions such as interviews, vox-pop, questionnaires and
focus group feedback.
I have chosen to talk about this topic as it is a well known
issue in the world and that 95% of my audience illegally
download music where as only 5% legally download music.
There is more technology developing around the world and
the will always be ways of obtaining music which makes this
a current issue.
Content of Ideas
• I will commence my documentary by investigating what my target audiences interest is. I
will then try and demonstrate these interest and add some humour to the interests that I
am trying out. The humour of my documentary is my unique selling point.

• It will have arguments for and against from other people about legally and illegally
downloading music. This would make my documentary a lot more balanced

• However I may have some restrictions as people could lie to me giving me false
information making my facts and figures inaccurate. I may have to pay for the royalty of
certain contributors and locations

• I am taking the angle of illegally downloading music which may make my audience less
attracted to my documentary

• But at the same time I may be helping them by revealing useful information such as
downloading music illegally may cause a virus on your computer.
Structure and Running Order
• I will demonstrate different interests to start off my documentary

• I will then move on with my next objective and screen wipe the transition to a cutaway
of a voiceover narrating the different websites that my audience use and mention
some facts and figures to educate my audience on what they are learning

• The third part of my documentary will involve vox-pops expressing their information
on how much they download music and what websites they use. This will also have
integrated graphics from my questionnaire to add to my feature.

• I will then use an apple store based in lakeside and interview the manager on the
positive side on legally downloading music to interest my audience that do not
illegally download music.

• I could then talk about how music was not that technical which will explore the
history of music appealing to my audience of 16-18.
Profile of Target Audience and
appeal of your Idea
• I will target my audiences interest by attempting with limited success to do kick ups, play a games console and play the
drums. My introduction will be unique as the humour will connote to my audience that this is not just another boring
documentary.

• My questionnaires indicated that my target audience of 16-18 years use certain downloading websites more than
others. These sites will be denoted in cutaways which will make the audience feel the documentary is specifically
aimed at them.

• Male and female Vox-pops in my documentary to ensure both genders are represented. I will use lakeside shopping
centre after school hours to ensure that I will catch a cross section of 16-18 year olds.

• I will include a variety of ethnicities and socio economic groups in my radio station segment such as a receptionist or
security guard through to a presenter/artist. This will appeal to my audience as I am sure most of them will listen to the
radio at some stage.
Explanation of research and key
findings
• This quantitative, secondary research helped me to find out facts and figures about the UK
downloading market such as 95% of people download music illegally. I did this research by
the internet and this method was particularly useful towards my content research.

• My focus groups provided me with invaluable qualitative, primary research. I wanted to find
out amongst other aspects what angle I should base my documentary about music
downloading on. This method proved to be very helpful as I was then able to make a
decision to base my documentary on the consumers point of view rather than the music
industry.
