PROBLEM ON SUPERHETERODYNE
RECEIVER
Draw the block diagram of
superheterodyne receiver and explain the
operation. Write frequency components
present at the output of each block if audio
frequency is 1 khz and carrier frequency is
540 khz.

Ganged tuning
Q. A receiver is tuned to 3-10 Mhz frequency
range with IF frequency of 40.525 MHz.
1] find the range of L.O. frequency and image
frequency. It is an AM receiver with each
channel occupying 10 KHZ of bandwidth
2]Draw frequency response if IF and AF
amplifiers.
Range of local oscillator frequency:
Fo1=Fs1+IF
=3+40.525
=43.525
Fo2=Fs2+IF
=Fs2+IF
=30+40.525
=70.525
Therefore the range of local oscillator
frequency is from 43.525 Mhz to 70.525
Mhz .
Image Frequecy,
Fsi=Fs+2IF
Fsi=3+(2* 40.525)=84.05 Mhz OR
Fsi=30+(2*40.525)=111.05 Mhz

Q] A superheterodyne receiver having an RF amplifier and IF of 450 kHz is
tuned to 15 MHz.Calculate the Qs of RF amplifier and mixer input tuned
circuits, both being the same,if the receivers image rejection is to be 120.
SOLN:
Given:IF=450 kHz,fs=15 MHz,
I.R.=120
The overall image rejection is given by,
I.R.=I.R.1*I.R.2
So, I.R.1*I.R.2=120 .(1)
Calculate I.R.1:
I.R.1=sqrt(1+(Q^2*p^2)) .(2)
Where p = (fsi/fs)-(fs/fsi) .(3)
But fsi = fs+2 IF =15*(10^6)+(2*450*(10^3))
=15.9MHz .(4)
p= (15.9/15)-(15/15.9)
=0.1166 ..(5)
Substituting this into equation (2) we get,
I.R.1=sqrt(1+((0.1166^2)*(Q^2)))
=sqrt(1+(0.01359*(Q^2))) (6)
Calculate I.R.2:
Similarly,
I.R.2=sqrt(1+((Q^2)*(p^2)))
=sqrt(1+(0.01359*(Q^2))) (7)
Calculate Q:
Substituting equations (6) and (7) into equation (1)we get,
(sqrt(1+(0.01359*(Q^2))))*(sqrt(1+(0.01359*(Q^2)))) = 120
So, 1+(0.01359 * (Q^2)) = 120]
So, Q = 93.55
Thus the Q of RF amplifier as well as mixer is 93.55.
