What does vain means?

Vain means empty, useless, false, unreal, and

worthless.

In short, taking God's name in vain refers to
the abuse, misuse, blasphemy, cursing, or
manipulation of the Lord's name.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in
vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes
His name in vain.
(Exodus 20:7)
And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you
profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.
(Leviticus 19:12)
You shall not profane My holy name, but I will be hallowed
among the children of Israel. I am the LORD who sanctifies
you.
(Leviticus 22:32)
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain,
for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His
name in vain.
(Deuteronomy 5:11)
Meaning of the Second Commandment:
This commands on speaking with
reverence of God and of the saints, and of
all holy things; keeping lawful oaths and
vows.
We should fear and love God that we
may not curse, swear, use witchcraft, lie, or
deceive by His name, but call upon it in
every trouble. Pray, praise, and give thanks.
Respect for His name is an expression of the
respect owed to the mystery of God Himself
(CCC 2144)

A name is sacred for a person is sacred, and a
persons name is a symbol for the person.

The name of God revealed in the burning bush is
I AM
(JHWH) (Ex. 3:14)
Gods name avows:
1. Uniqueness: He is I, the only one person.

2. Infinity: God does not limit Himself to
being this or that, He is simply I AM.

3. Omnipresence: He has no past (was) or
coming future (will be). He is always
present (am).

No Jew can utter this sacred name. Jesus
ascribed this name to Himself in John 8:58
and the Jews attempted to stone Him. This
is because Jesus is God.
