WORD DEFINITION
infer
what is suggested or hinted at through clues, for instance what someone does, how
someone dresses, the way someone speaks
deduce to decide after looking at the facts / the information/ to come to a conclusion
facial features parts of the face e.g. the nose

feeling that you want to shout at someone or hurt them because they have done
something bad:
disappointed
sad because something was not as good as you expected, or because something did
not happen

'the line' short for 'frontline' . A place where two sides face each other in a war.
'cursing' to use rude words because you are angry
'staff' the people who work for a company or organisation
'incompetent ' not having the ability to do something as it should be done
'swine' a person who you consider to be extremely unpleasant and unkind or another word for pig
'cheery' bright and happy
'old card' an old word for having a special personality or being eccentric
'slogged'
to travel or move with difficulty, for example through wet, sticky soil or snow, or when you are
very tired
'did for them' responsible for what happened to someone in a bad way
'plan of attack' a battle plan
enraged
to cause someone to become very angry
heavyhearted when your heart is weighed down with sadness
confused not able to think clearly or to understand something
annoyed a little angry
sympathy the feeling of understanding and caring about someones problems

'Good-morning; good-morning!' the General said
When we met him last week on our way to the line.
Now the soldiers he smiled at are most of 'em
dead,
And we're cursing his staff for incompetent swine.
'He's a cheery old card,' grunted Harry to Jack
As they slogged up to Arras with rifle and pack.
But he did for them both by his plan of attack.
