INTRODUCTION
Due to the recent growth in the
construction industry, the demand for fine
aggregate is escalating rapidly
Shortage of river sand
Abundant sea sand is one of the
alternatives for the reduction of usage of
river sand

Literature survey

In this the relevant properties of offshore sand obtained soon after dredging
and to examine the effects on concrete

Prof.S.R.DE S. Chandrakeerthy
Experimental study is conducted to consider the suitability of sea sand in
the concrete production from the respective of aggregate and concrete
properties.

The Effects of Chloride on Durability of Concrete Mixed With Sea Sand*The compressive strengths of the concrete test pieces containing sea sand
continuously declined from five to 15 years of age. Also, increases in the
chloride content of this sea sand content added to this decline in their
compressive strengths.

Abundant sea sand is one of the alternatives for the reduction of
usage of river sand. River sand will be replaced with abundant
sea sand in accordance with a specified percentage

Advantages and Disadvantages

of Sea Sand
ADVANTAGES

It is the cheapest form of fine aggregate

In contrast to crushed fine aggregate, it is more rounded or
cubical like river sand and hence, demand for water and
cement is low Price
As it is found in natural deposits grading of sea sand is
generally good
Grading of sea sand is finer than that of river sand and since
local crushed stone coarse aggregate is coarser, it does not
show any adverse effects when used in concrete

DISADVANTAGES

It may lead to efflorescence and corrosion of reinforcement

If washing is necessary, it may be an additional burden
Offshore sand facility will require a large capital investment
