Special Notes for Fall 2014

We will meet the week of Labor Day.
Different rooms than you had for BIO205.
A (AA-AH) = Rigge 417
B (BA-BH) = Rigge 419
BIO205 is also being offered.
Most sections are completely filled. If you miss a lab (sickness or Creightonrelated event) do NOT just show up to a section.

Logistics and Overall Preparation for Weekly Labs

Bring $10 the first week for the lab manual.
Dividing into 5 Modules:
-related concepts.
-In class exam after completing each.
Preparation:
1. Read lab manual.
2. Watch associated BlueCasts and instructional videos.
3. Take BlueLine Quiz before arriving (no quiz for Week #1).
During Lab Periods:
1. Periodic TA checks (initialing) during labs.
2. Will do two lab notebook checks.
3. At the end of each lab there are practice questions and
interpretive questions.

Pre-lab Quizzes and Attendance

Make sure you read the lab manual and watched BlueCasts (material from
both is fair game)
-Background/general information.
-Quick calculation.
-Procedural.
-Drop your lowest quiz score.

If not dressed for success (proper lab attire), then you will NOT be
allowed in lab.
Attendance points make sure you attend and try each lab.

In-class Exams.
Week following the completion of each module (see syllabus).
Multiple choice or calculation (show work).
I. Background and general information.
II. Practical aspects:
- how to use an instrument correctly
- when to add different components
III. Understanding the theory:
- what is the purpose of adding ____?
- if you forgot to do X how would that most
- interpreting data from a similarly done

likely affect your result

experiment

No make up in-class exams unless an extreme situation.

Lab Reports
Two lab reports:
1. Module #2.
2. Module #3.

Dont rush through labs.

Know the whys and hows of experiments.
Most of the data needed in your reports are generated in lab. If you dont pay
attention you may not know where the data is.

Essay Assignment

Gain practice research and writing about a topic in the field of cell and
molecular biology.
More info to come.
Given a broad topic focus to a specific question write about cell
and molecular details
G-protein Coupled Receptors

Academic Honesty
The College of Arts and Sciences policy on questions of academic honesty is
found in detail at: http://www2.creighton.edu/
fileadmin/user/CCAS/docs/acadhonesty.html.
Please note that if you are found to have engaged in an act of academic
dishonesty in this course you may receive a range of serious penalties, from
receiving a 0 for the assignment to receiving an F for the course.
A letter documenting the dishonesty will be sent to the department chair and the
Deans Office.

In your writing assignments ask if you are unsure if something is

considered plagiarism.
Quotes is not plagiarism, but are hardly, if ever used, in science
writing. My advice = never use in this class.
