contains large amount of water, do not require exact supervision on water level, steam pressure is steadier. accessible for maintenance radiation lost is lower cost of maintenance is relatively low
Disadvantages of Fire Tube Boiler
contains large amount of water, requires long interval of time raise steam, and are not flexible as regards to steam demand. more susceptible to explosion, and in such case, large volume of escaping water flashing into steam upon reaching the atmosphere might cause serious damage. not capable of producing high temperature and pressure of steam. lower efficiency
Emergency Abnormal Condition
1. High Water level Check and reduce firing rate Operate blow down system Throttle feed check valve Water hammering, close steam outlet valve to prevent damage to pipeline and machinery
2.Water Level Below Gauge Glass
Shut off burner Take the boiler out of load Ensure internal damage due to overheating Do not bring up water level in haste until the boiler parts are cooled down. 3.Large Leak Water level vanishes Bursting noise Drop in steam pressure Flame may be put off by steam
Safety Valves protects the shell or drum against
excessive pressure from building up in steam boiler, thus guarding the boiler from explosion. Water Column provides a stilling space so that its water level will not be greatly affected by pitching and rolling of the ship. Foaming- producing steam bubbles on water level of boiler water cause by oil leak
Grooving found around seams, rivets head or
where the metal has been bent or strained. Pitting local corrosion on boiler water line Flareback explosion of mixture of oil vapour or gas in the furnace due to improper purging before firing the boiler. Water Column provides stilling place of the boiler water during ships rolling.
Safety Valve Operating Troubles
Chatter metallic hammering sound or vibratory noise caused by improper clearance, bent spindle, looses blowdown rings, improper position of upper and/or lower adjusting ring position and excessive back pressure. Simmer the first leakage of steam before the safety valves pops open, which allowed 1.5 to2% popping pressure of the valve. Prolonged simmering may be due to improper position of adjusting rings or distorted valve parts.
Leakage constant hissing sound; damage
seating, foreign in sealing surface. Hang up safety valve fails to reseat due to improper blowdown, adjustment, or mechanical interference. Water hammering caused by condensed water in the pipeline due to abrupt opening of valves.
