The cell search procedure allows the UE to acquire the slot and frame synchronization and to get the downlink
cell ID and cell ID group associated with the cell. The Physical cell ID (PCI) can then be calculated by UE .

System Information
System information distribution is an essential and basic feature of LTE RAN.
The UE requires system information to:
Perform idle mode tasks
PLMN selection
Cell selection and reselection
Conformity to Cell Reservations and Access Restrictions
Tracking Area registration
Originate access to the network
Terminate access including reception of paging messages
Maintain the LTE connection
Perform handover
System Information (SI) comprises the Master Information Block (MIB), the system Information
Block1 (SIB1) to SIB8. SIB1 is contained in an own RRC message, System Information Block
Type1 and cannot be combined with any other SIB, while one or more of SIB2-SIB8 can be
combined in the same SI message.
The MIB is broadcast on the Physical Broadcast Channel (PBCH). SIB1 messages and SI
messages are broadcast on the Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) at regular intervals.
One or more of SIB 2 - SIB 8 can be combined in the same SI message

Random Access Process

In the LTE network, the UE uses the random access process to gain access to cells for
the following reasons:
Initial access to the network from the idle state
Regaining access to the network after a radio link failure
As part of the handover process to gain timing synchronization with a new cell
Before uplink data transfers when the UE is not time synchronized with the network
Two types of RA procedures are defined in the standard for FDD
CBRA (Contention Based Random Access)
CFRA (Contention Free Random Access)

Random Access Process

The Four Step Random Access procedure is performed during the following events:
Initial Access,
Handover,
and to re-establish the lost Uplink Synchronization
1. Preamble transmission on PRACH
Timing estimation at eNodeB
2. Random access response
Timing Advance command
UL-SCH resource assignment for step 3
Temporary C-RNTI
3. First UL-SCH transmission
Payload depends on the above use-case
Used for Contention resolution
4. Contention resolution on DL-SCH
Echo terminal identity from step 3
also other signaling/data
Also support for contention-free random access procedure during Handover >only step 1
and 2 used
